2012 BMW X5

I own a 2012 BMW X5 that is experiencing a Footwell Module (FRM) failure. BMW issued an Extended Limited Warranty for the FRM extending coverage to 15 years or 186,000 miles. My vehicle falls within those limits. The FRM failure has rendered the headlights, high beams, turn signals, brake lights, and power windows inoperative. As a result, the vehicle cannot be safely operated on public roads. Other motorists may not be able to see when the vehicle is braking or turning, creating a significant safety concern. BMW of Brooklyn and BMW of North America have informed me that I must pay a $360 diagnostic fee upfront before they will determine whether the repair is covered under BMW's FRM Extended Limited Warranty. BMW's warranty letter states that the FRM warranty is subject to the same eligibility requirements and limitations as the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty. In my view, requiring a substantial upfront diagnostic fee to evaluate a known defect covered by an extended warranty creates an unreasonable barrier to obtaining warranty repairs. I understand diagnostic charges may be appropriate if the failure is ultimately determined to be unrelated to the FRM. However, I do not believe owners should be required to pay a significant upfront fee simply to determine whether a known and potentially covered defect qualifies for warranty coverage. I respectfully request that NHTSA review both the safety implications of FRM failures and BMW's administration of this warranty program.

Two nights ago I was at Domino’s Pizza. I put my car in reverse and the car died and the steering wheel locked up like the power steering was giving out I was able to start the car again, but still with no power steering assist and drove the car home about a mile away, but every time I slowed down or came to a stop sign or a stoplight, the car would die, and the battery light would flash on the dash and it would say charging malfunction once I got home we took a look at the engine and noticed that none of the belts were working at all and then I started to google what could possibly be the problem and a couple of different recalls came up recall number 12V550000 and that is engine and engine cooling engine diesel what the name of it is and the recall date is 1127 2012 and then the next one is 2012 BMW X5 diesel SUVs from the model year 2012 923 BMW X fives have been recalled because they have defective engine belt, tensioners and cracks that develop along the welds if the belt tensioner fails there could be a sudden loss of power steering assist that is sounds like exactly what happened to my car and then there’s another one recall number B121918 which is from September 2019 and it is called idler pulley bolt and come to find out that actually was a recall on my vehicle, but the previous owner is the one that had it repaired so I’m not sure if BMW is willing to repair it again but there’s not a lot of miles on this cards a 2012 I bought it with 95,000 miles on it and it currently only has 131,000 miles on it. I’m just hoping for some kind of resolution here this is the fifth Bmw that I bought in my lifetime and I for the most part I’ve had pretty good ultimate driving experience and good customer service and some good financing but I can’t see why just recall wouldn’t cover my vehicle. It’s currently in the shop. They’re doing a diagnostic on it and I will be getting that back later on today and I can report that back to you folks, hopefully it could be recalled. M

I received a message of Restraint system malfunction and when I called the local dealer I was told the part is not availabel anywhere in the USA. What am I supposed to do with this. I was told the air bags and seatbelts may malfunction. The vehicle only has 85k miles. its a 2012. At this point who will take the car as a trade? It's not safe and they don't have an answer except to say I'm [XXX] and i guess you need to get a new vehicle!! Can you believe this? I have to get a whole new vehicle because they don't have a part! You can't make this stuff up. I spoke with BMW USA and was told they only honor 4yr and 50k miles and after 10years they are not responsible for parts to be made. The I was told to get it further diagnosed to the tune of 250.00 so they can "MAYBE" have the parts manufactured. What the heck! this company is saying our cars are garbage after 10yrs! While driving on highway at 70 MPH, front AWD driveshaft failed and caused massive damage to engine and underside of car is destroyed. The flailing driveshaft punched a hole in engine and oil pan, causing all engine oil to spray on hot exhaust and the tires while driving. Luckily was able to slow car and steer it to shoulder, near miss accident. There is recall 17V-138 on this year of BMW X5 for exact issue that happened to me, but BMW states that my VIN is not affected. Yeah right.

A recall on the prop shaft was done in 2017 and today 06/24 while driving on the freeway I heard a loud clunking noise and then a huge pop and I pulled over on the side of the road to find my prop shaft had exploded and messed up everything. Now im stuck with a nonfunctional car because a part that was allegedly replaced for safety ended up exploding while I was driving.

To my understanding BMW agreed to honor the N63 Customer Care Package voluntarily regardless of mileage or age of the engine as referred to BMW bulletins SIB[XXX], [XXX], and [XXX]. My local dealer did not know anything about the [XXX] and when I called BMW USA I was told that they not honor the package any more even though the bulletin says they will take care of it regardless of engine mileage or age. To my understanding that should have been a recall but BMW negotiated to call it Customer Care Package as an initiative to police itself instead of having a mandated action by a recall. My local BMW dealer is in Temple Texas. Please advice me on how to proceed to service my engine as promised for free based on these bulletins. Thank you. Vehical randomly shuts off, it all safety systems warning lamps come on l, like ABS, Airbag, and traction control. Found wiring harness laying in a pool of water in the rear right cargo compartment. Rain water leaking from sunroof collected in compartment. The harness contains wires for the the vehicles CAN buss systems the water causes corrosion in the harness, which causes all sorts of problems that could happen at any time like the vehicle shutting off or the airbag or abs warning light coming on.

We hit a deer while driving at 55 MPH. We were wearing seatbelts and not injured, it was a major frontal impact, the car is probably totalled. When we stopped we noticed multiple warning messages on the display: * restraint system failure * passenger airbag failure * pre-tensioner failure It appears that the car detected the collision and tried to activate the restraint systems, but nothing activated. No air bags deployed, and we did not feel the pre-tensioners activate.

this vehicle running board kits failed and almost thrown vehicle off the service lift. It is unsafe to use on this vehicle. it may cause harm or kills someone. these mounting brackets for this running board required removed and took placed of vehicle designed service lift points. Manufacturer claims it is safe to use while not offer specific way or additional parts installed to lift vehicle safely. prior to collapsed on the service lift, it made some creak sound and collapsed. I was using the seat heating on a very cold day recently and 10 minutes into the drive we noticed a weird smell, but couldn’t locate the source. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Repair shop repaired the pulley because i couldn't steer the vehicle correctly. It would jerk me on the road. Vehicle is available for inspection but is already repaired by local shop. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? I could drive but couldn't steer intermittently. Scary!! i couldn't make a full turns and there was a rough spot in the steering sometimes. Eventually it locked up an couldn't leave parking spot. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes. But i already got it repaired. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Not that i know of. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No. I only smelled burning rubber or electrical components. Smoke from engine bay and screeching sounds. Worst part is it was intermittent which gives the driver a false sense of security to drive but almost crashed because down the road couldn't steer.

BMW turns off driving down the road. Loss of power, power steering and brakes. Dangerous due to the fact that it is hard and sometimes impossible to pull over and get it to restart. When it happens on the freeway it is very dangerous because it is almost impossible to pull over. The SUV just quits working for no apparent reason. This has happened several times and not just one incident. Last time it happened was in the middle of an interstate in Denver CO with a child in the back seat. It happens at different speeds without warning.

2012 BMW X5. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARD TO ILLUMINATED CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED AN ENGINE FIRE. Passenger external front and rear door handle assembly caught on fire and melted the rubber grommet. BMW said it was the comfort sensor fuse that should have blown but it did not. The rubber grommet holding the door handle melted. I had to buy two door handles that cost $250 each to replace the ones that burnt out.

My BMW X5 is experiencing the exact safety issues that the NHTSA campaign number: 21V907000 was published for (September 12, 2012 - Jun 29, 2017). I was told that since my vehicle was manufactured on 08/2012 it was not eligible for the NHTSA dealer recall and repair. I was told that the vehicle was in risk of fire with the repair cost upwards of $5,000. This seems to be a much larger issue than the year groups NHTSA has selected.

Passenger interior Door handle assembly caught on fire and melted the rubber grommet. BMW said it was the comfort sensor fuse should have blown but did not. I saw blue smoke while driving from the passenger door mirror blowing out of the door handle like a volcano for 2 ft sideways. The rubber grommet holding the door handle melting completely down the outside door exterior. BMW fixed the sensor but my entire electrical system has been a disaster since. the passenger seat air bag warning, the parking brake, sensors working intermittent in the vehicle. There is a problem there should be a recall on the entire electrical system.

Ever since the rain starter my aux water pump don't work and brake light too. And it seems like something has been draining my battery because battery discharge comes up. And I think the idle idle pulley issue affects almost most of that year bmw X5 because my serpentine belt only installed 10,000 miles ago and already see threads being worn out. Unless that's how long they last. I had to bring the car back in multiple times to get it adjusted because kept making squealing noise. They blamed it on water pump and didn't change the thermostat. Water even leak into front passenger side where all the fuses were. When I connected the battery charger I could hear the pump all of sudden working and the radiator tank sputter water out. I don't want to bring it to dealership and get charged for things that they should fix with charging me but they tell me it's some other issue and have me pay for it. The way they act are worse than gangsters because if you get it fix elsewhere they say it's not covered by them them. And the driveshaft issue, even alot of the cars not in recall are affected and how are they to assume which car need replacing and which dont? I think the v8 engine is just too much power for the other parts to handle and they don't want to admit it. Because how many bmw X5 owners complain about these issue ??

Egr cooler broken and leaking exhaust gas to cabin making all passengers drousy, a/c vents pulls outside air. Making it a lot worse egr will be replaced and save for warranty inspection etc.. My safety was affected sue to carbon monoxide emissions, others were affected due to the drowsiness effects of the exhaust making the drive drousy at the wheel . No reproductions know. Inspection by owner No inspection yet due to the need of vehicle had to replace asap to keep using part saved for inspection. Engine light due to glow plugs, non related to egr cooler, and brakes lights due to sensor not replace yet.

After accelerating normally on the highway the vehicle shut off completely, without warning, and put itself into neutral in the middle of a busy freeway. (No warning lights, no smoke or smell of any kind). The Car would not start despite multiple attempts using a jump start from the tow company. I could have been hit by another vehicle while stopped. The car was then towed to a BMW dealership where they determined an engine replacement was probably necessary because it appeared seized. (they could not turn the engine using a breaker bar with the belt off. ) No further investigation was done. The car was running: - castrol 5w-30, -regular oil & filter changes every 5,000 miles -was never modified -all the fuel injectors changed by the dealership under a recall 1 year before the vehicle died

Front passenger door would not unlock or open from inside or outside. Per dealer and report this appears to be failure of the passenger door actuator/solenoid. Door panel will require removal to confirm. There was no immediate safety issue, however with 3 small children, there is a reluctance to drive this car with the potential for doors locking and no way to extricate them should the problem occur on all doors. My understanding is there is no mechanical release associated with these doors. In addition, if an elderly/handicapped person had been in the front passenger seat during this occurrence, there could have been serious issues with extrication. I have been an engineer for 30 years and liken this problem to the old refrigerator doors latches trapping children inside and similarly, rear trunk latches with no interior releases. I have notified the manufacturer and reported this issue.

The DPF exhaust emissions system failed. BMW dealership refused to replace only replaced a holding tank. That code was not shown. The x5 left shop with a engine light and emissions failure. Independent shop scanned car explained diesel dpf system has failed and is under warranty.. dealership refused to fix. Car runs sluggish, engine warning keeps coming on and take to service. ... The egr cooler failed. The independent shop confirmed codes. Exhaust smell in cabin, reduced power, sluggish, and car goes into LIMP mode while I was driving on the freeway. THE ENGINE STUTTERS OFTEN (EVERY DRIVE), AND ONCE IN A WHILE PRODUCES THICK WHITE SMOKE FOR A SECOND OR TWO WHEN ACCELERATING. THE ENGINE ALSO SUFFERS FROM HIGH OIL CONSUMPTION (I HAVE TO ADD A QUART OF ENGINE OIL EVERY 200 MILES). I'VE ALSO HAD TO REPLACE THE SPARK PLUGS TWICE IN THE LAST 3 YEARS BECAUSE THEY ARE FOULED WITH OIL AND SOOTH AND THE ENGINE MISFIRES. DEALER IS STATING THE ISSUE IS RELATED TO S63 ENGINE VALVE STEM SEALS, AND RECOMMENDING THAT THESE BE REPLACED, BUT THE WORK WILL COST $7000 AND ISN'T COVERED UNDER WARRANTY! THE IDLER PULLEY BOLT BROKE FOR THE THIRD TIME. THE CAR HAS APPROX 60 K MILES, AND THE LAST REPLACEMENT WAS DONE IN MAY 2018, APPROX 15 K MILES AGO. VEHICLE WAS MOVING AND IT LOST THE STEERING (STEERING HYDRAULICS STOPPED WORKING, MAKING IT VERY DIFFICULT TO STEER), BATTERY INDICATOR CAME ON AND THE ENGINE COOLING FAN SET ON HIGH SPEED. THE INCIDENT HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING, APPROX HALF THE MILE FROM THE HOUSE. WAS ABLE TO SLOWLY PULLED IT IN FRONT OF THE HOUSE. NOTIFIED THE DEALER AND WAITING FOR THEM TO COME AND PICK IT UP, THE CAR IS NOT DRIVEABLE. THIS INCIDENT, WITH THE IDLER PULLEY BOLT IS THE THIRD TIME AFTER THEIR INITIAL RECALL. BMW DOES NOT HAVE A REMEDY FOR THIS.

Water and debris may enter the front driveshaft's universal joint, causing excessive wear and possibly resulting in the joint's failure.

Risk: If the front universal joint fails, the front wheels would not be driven, affecting vehicle traction. Additionally, continued driving of the vehicle with a broken front universal joint may damage other components. Either condition may increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front driveshaft, free of charge. The recall began on April 18, 2017. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Risk: IF THE DRIVER BELIEVES THAT THE TRANSMISSION IS IN PARK AND DOES NOT USE THE PARKING BRAKE, THE VEHICLE COULD ROLL AWAY AFTER EXITING THE VEHICLE INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH OR INJURY.
