XXX lights on dash for abs, brakes, traction came on upon commuting home from [XXX] to [XXX]. I went to Honda Fredericksburg and diagnosis was C2200 failed and the part was on back order. Returned to SC and followed up with Jeep and local automotive services and part back order but able to drive without replacement and still awaiting product. XXX engine light on in addition to the continual abs, brake, traction lights as well as vehicle going into limp mode. Took it immediately to local automotive services shop and received ABS control Module failure is now sending error to other sensors to put Jeep in limp mode and inoperable. OEM Part still on back order and unable to obtain from Jeep. I contacted Mt. Pleasant Jeep dealership service department as well and unable to get the part. No part available and unknown timeframe which leaves me to garage the Jeep while waiting for a new part to become available. The ABS module on my vehicle has gone bad. I have no antilock brakes, no traction control and my cruise control no longer works. Jeep no longer produces the module needed to repair my vehicle. Their customer service department refuses to help because I have no proof that I’ve attempted to purchase the part that isn’t available for purchase. There are thousands of people with this same issue. I’m also unable to sell or trade this vehicle because this is a major safety issue and it has diminished the value significantly. Please help me.

I own a 2014 Jeep Wrangler Sahara JKU with approximately 67,000 miles. The vehicle has experienced a failure involving the ABS control module and related braking/stability systems. Current symptoms include: * ABS warning light illuminated * Brake warning light illuminated * Traction control warning light illuminated * Intermittent speedometer malfunction * Brake pedal occasionally vibrates and becomes soft during operation * Vehicle hesitates for several seconds when accelerating from a stopped position while dashboard warning lights flash The vehicle has been diagnosed by two separate Jeep repair facilities as having a failed ABS control module. I have been informed that replacement ABS modules for this vehicle have been unavailable for approximately nine months and remain unavailable as of today. This appears to be a widespread issue affecting Jeep Wrangler JK vehicles, with many owners reportedly unable to obtain replacement safety-critical ABS modules through Mopar or dealership networks. Because the ABS and traction/stability systems are malfunctioning, the vehicle cannot pass inspection and is unsafe for my family of four, especially during rain or emergency braking situations. This issue affects federally mandated vehicle safety systems, including anti-lock braking and electronic stability control. Owners should not be left without access to replacement parts for critical safety equipment for extended periods of time.

Once it has caused me to lose control and end up off the road. Vehicle was at dealer for other recall and the ABS module needs to be replaced but on back order.

ABS Module component has failed which controls anti-lock brakes, cruise control and traction control. Jeep has no stock of ABS Modules, and no production dates for potential fix. Therefore these Jeeps have reverted a decade or two in safety losing their ABS, traction control and going into limp mode, which prevents you from driving (I have not experienced limp mode but neither do I wish for this to happen.)

This is the 2nd 2014 Jeep Wrangler I have owned that has this problem. It has been diagnosed by the Jeep dealer and another mechanic. The part is on National back order. I ordered the first one in 2024 and it has not been available. I have done a bunch of research and believe a CHIP in the module fails but is no longer available. My Jeep is available for inspection.

The vehicle has been virtually trouble-free for many years. Recently, it began to have some issues. The vehicle is covered under a lifetime warranty from Chrysler and has been serviced by the local Jeep dealer. We brought the vehicle in to service in November, 2025. One of the issues that had just occurred was that the brake warning lights came on. The dealer said they were not able to replace the AntiLock Brake module because they were backordered. They said the vehicle would be safe to drive. We waited a month and still no part. I reached out to the manufacturer, and they said the part was not in stock and I would be notified when they would be able to send it to the dealer. It is no about 5 months later and still no part. The part(s) show as available from the Manufacturer online, however they continue to say there are none available for our vehicle. The Dealer service department said this is not unique to us, that it is a constant problem for them to get this part from the manufacturer. We need the vehicle for transportation and are worried that the defective part may lead to brake failure and an accident.

FCA is not handling this recall professionally. Dealerships are stating they do not handle the towing, despite this being a DO NOT DRIVE recall that has resulted in deaths. FCA has used a call center that employs people who barely speak English. Lack of ability to communicate with the customer and dealership staff should disqualify someone from serving in this capacity. The service department at my local dealership seems to be suggesting I just drive the vehicle down, which contradicts the DO NOT DRIVE portion of this recall. I do not believe FCA is acting in good faith to perform these recalls in a safe manner for the customer.

My ABS module failed, which is a very well know issue with the 2014 to 2018 models. When the ABS module failed I was driving the vehicle and it went into fail safe mode while I was on the freeway service road. The speedometer stopped working and the vehicle would not go over about 20 mph. The vehicle was fine one minute and then I had no control of how fast I was going. I was with traffic that was going 60 mph and it could have been extremely dangerous for me or other drivers. The vehicle has been at the dealership since October 3rd, 2025 and has not been drivable due to this issue. It has not been inspected by anyone other than the dealership. There were warning lights but I was told that it was fine to drive until the part was available. It is currently on a national backorder for the last 18+ months without an estimated arrival date. The failure first appeared in June of 2024 and the part has been on backorder since then.

The ABS Control module has been out on my vehicle since May 2025. Which is when the part was ordered by my dealership through MOPAR as the part is only sold through MOPAR directly. This part cannot be replaced through third party and requires a MOPAR agent to scan to the vehicle. This has been a systemic issue where it has been referred to as a “galactic back order” In the cars manual from Jeep when there are issues with the ABS control module it lists this as a critical safety issues and to take it directly to a dealership for service. When this issue is present it disables Electronic stability control (ESC), Anti locking braking system (ABS), Descent assist control, and cruise control. This increases safety issues especially when driving on slick winter or wet roadways. I wonder how many other people had an issue like this and contributed to an accident? When an inquiry is submitted to find out more about this issue from the order it’s going to be sent out on x date then x date comes and it gets pushed back now it’s y date then z. per stelantis this part is under their “engineer review” and now it’s unknown when they will release this part.

The ABS module was determined to be faulty via a code scan in July 2025 by the dealership. I took the vehicle to another mechanic for confirmation and this was determined to be accurate. A new module has been ordered but is on backorder and may not become available for months as many other owners are dealing with the same problem. I was told that it was still drivable and this is a daily driver vehicle. This now appears to be causing the vehicle to go into "limp" mode, not allowing the vehicle to accelerate at times when pulling into traffic.

I own a 2014 Jeep Wrangler, Rubicon. I have not been able to drive my Jeep for 3 years because the ABS light is on and I am unable to get the part to replace it. I have heard from several other Jeep owners that they are experiencing the same ABS failure. The ABS light has been on since 2022 and there are no MOPAR ABS replacement parts. I would like to officially report this failure because I have not been able to resolve this issue. ABS module failed and the Jeep began violently shaking on the freeway. There is a significant risk of the brakes locking up which put myself and the general public at risk. A dealer confirmed however there are no parts to buy from Stellantis/Mopar. They are on an "indefinite backorder". Even getting them rebuilt is impossible because they are unable to get the parts. ABS, brake, and traction control all came on when the module failed and the death rattle started. This has left me with a dangerous and almost completely useless vehicle for over a year with no resolution in sight. This is a public emergency with so many vehicles that this is happening to and we need a resolution.

I had Gresham 4 Wheel drive do several repairs on my 2014 Jeep Wrangler and the same day I drove it back home I experience death wobble which put me at risk by having me to stop at a highway to be able to control my vehicle which was extremely dangerous for me and other drivers. I had repairs done to my Jeep in April 2024. At that time, I was made aware that my ABS control module was faulty and no longer functioning. I have been periodically checking with my mechanic and online to check the status of this part, only to find that it has been an ongoing issue with some models having this part unavailable since 2019. At the end of October 2025, I began having a major safety issue in which my Jeep's engine will shut off without warning and the only reason I will be aware is because the wheel will no longer turn easily (trying to turn without power steering). In addition, there will at times be a fluctuation of power either having a an extreme spike or drop in RPMs causing the Jeep to lurch while driving. The cruise control cannot be used with this issue, and I have also experienced malfunctions in the traction control (i.e. hydroplaning in a very small puddle in the road that a normal car could handle, let alone a Jeep). I have been waiting patiently for a year and a half and there are no updates available for Jeep owners, and the issues caused by this lack of parts could cause fatalities on the road or leave individuals with a very expensive, undrivable vehicle followed by the additional cost of purchasing a new vehicle. This is unacceptable for an extremely large and popular vehicle manufacturer to be unable to come to an agreement with parts manufacturers to resume production of a crucial vehicle part.

The ABS light on my instrument panel has been going off for Since April 2025. I have attempted to order a replacement ABS Control Module, but Stallantis keeps canceling the order with no reason provided. This appears to be a long ongoing problem, and others have reported waiting years for a replacement. I have also heard reports that Stallantis is no longer making the part. I understand that NHTSA has forced a recall on other Jeep/Ram ABS Control Modules, so I'm not sure why one has not been placed on the Jeep JK series.

Starting in approximately mid 2023 the vehicle began to leak oil. This was noted once the vehicle was parked after driving. There were various amounts of oil pooled underneath the oil filter housing on the ground. At this time it had approximately 70,000 miles. I had to consistently add many quarts of oil to keep the vehicle operating while going to several mechanics to diagnose the problem. There are many instances where a strong burning smell comes from the engine compartment especially when traveling at higher speeds (highway driving). It was determined that the oil filter housing had cracked and was the source of the oil leak. The cost for repair was approximately $800 for labor and the part, having to spend additional money to get a rental car. The mechanics stated that they have had to replace this same part on many other Jeep Wranglers that are the same make/year. The mechanic did say that another jeep that had the same problem did catch on fire due to the oil running down through the heated engine as this part is made of plastic and situated on the top side of the engine. My Jeep is current on all maintenance and there has been no accident to cause this part to crack. I was made aware that previous models had metal housing, as opposed to plastic hence there not being an issue. By the time we figured out the source of the leak, it was no longer under warranty, so I had the work completed by a local mechanic instead of the dealer. No warnings, not even a low oil pressure or check engine light came on. It was the burning smell and oil loss that made me aware of an issue. Once again, at approximately 100,000 miles it has happened again. The mechanic I originally brought it to is out of business, but the part would be out of warranty regardless. Now I am stuck spending another approximately 1,000 to have it replaced again, with the same part that will inevitably crack again. They really need to recall and replace this part with a metal housing.

Mechanic said abs module needs to be replaced. Then he informed me that the part is not available for purchase and not being manufactured anymore. I now have a vehicle that is useless and not safe to drive. This is unacceptable customer service. Very disappointed in Jeep for not addressing this problem or offering an alternative solution. I can not afford to buy another car.

The engine in my 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (3.6L Pentastar V6) suddenly seized without warning at approx. 154,525 miles. The vehicle stalled while in motion, causing immediate loss of power and creating a dangerous situation where I could have been struck by other traffic. This was a major safety hazard. The Jeep was towed to a dealership, where technicians confirmed the engine is seized and provided a written estimate of about $12,000 for full engine replacement. I later had the vehicle towed back to my home, but the failed engine remains in the vehicle and is available for inspection upon request. The problem has been reproduced and confirmed by the authorized Jeep service center. Jeep/Stellantis Customer Care has also been contacted, and a case has been opened.Decline goodwill assistance. There were no warning lamps, messages, or prior symptoms before the failure. The vehicle was operating normally until the sudden stall. This lack of warning combined with the engine seizure placed my safety and the safety of others at risk. I believe this issue is part of a known defect pattern with the 3.6L Pentastar engine, which has been subject to numerous complaints, service bulletins, and litigation. A well-maintained Jeep engine should not fail catastrophically at this mileage without warning.

For the past two years, this component has been faulty, leaving me without ABS functionality, traction control, and proper braking performance. As a result, I have experienced several dangerous situations in which my vehicle was nearly involved in accidents due to these safety deficiencies. Despite my efforts to resolve the matter, I have been unable to obtain the replacement part. I have contacted multiple dealerships, suppliers, and even Mopar directly, yet I have been given no estimated timeframe for delivery. I currently have the part on order, fully paid for, and after two years there is still no indication of when or if it will become available. This situation has created serious safety concerns for both myself and other motorists. Furthermore, I am unable to trade in or properly service my vehicle due to this unresolved issue. I find this unacceptable and believe it demonstrates a significant failure in both product support and customer service. The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while stopped at a red light, the accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. The contact's vehicle was rear-ended. The contact's wife, who was the other occupant of the vehicle, was taken to the hospital in a private vehicle. The contact's wife sustained a dislocated left hip. In addition, the contact's wife had previously had a left hip replacement and undergone four left hip surgeries. The vehicle was driven to the contact's residence. A police report was filed; however the information was unavailable. The contact stated that three months after the vehicle was purchased, the ABS, traction control, and several unknown warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with a failed ABS module. The contact was informed that the ABS module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was informed that the parts were on back order. The contact stated that the order was placed almost thirteen months ago. The contact stated that the vehicle was almost rear-ended two times recently. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The contact was advised to contact the NHTSA Hotline and report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.

The Clock Spring has been identified as being bad, (nothing in the steering wheel works). I have owned it for 5 years and it hasn't worked for at least 3-4 of those years. I don't know if it has been replaced... However, for something that is a safety concern, such as the airbags, I would think that it would work longer than 1-2 years... if it has been previously replaced. I can't find any records of it. The air bag lights have been on for a few years; I thought it was normal. I wasn't aware of any recalls on the clock spring/air bags until recently.

Our ABS Control module has failed. p/n 68145835AE. It's available at any time to inspect. The ABS system does not function. In a rain or snow situation this could cause severe harm to us and others on the road. Our local service center that works on a wide array of Jeep Wrangler products says they have other customers with the same problem on this specific model. It is also reported substantially on online Jeep enthusiast forums. The unit in our Jeep has been looked at by our service center. There are warning lights on the dash indicating the ABS is non-functional. This failed in May 2024. The ABS module also controls speed control and that also is no longer working. It has been this way for over a year. Other Jeep owners with this similar issue have reported the same issue. This appears to be a systemic issue that Jeep is very aware of but has taken no action to correct. The cost if I want to have this repaired is $1,200 plus labor.

Risk: Failure of the air bag circuit may prevent the driver's frontal air bag from deploying in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2014 Chrysler Town and Country and Dodge Grand Caravan vehicles manufactured March 20, 2014, to April 22, 2014, and 2014 Jeep Wrangler vehicles manufactured March 21, 2014, to April 22, 2014. Due to a software error, the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) may fail to learn the locations of the individual sensors while the vehicle is being driven. As a result, the low tire pressure warning light will illuminate, despite the the tire pressures being within specification. Should one of the tires lose air pressure, the driver would not be notified of the change in air pressure. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 138, "Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems."

Risk: If the TPMS light illuminates because the sensors cannot be located, it could mask an actual low tire pressure condition, possibly resulting in tire failure, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Chrysler has notified owners, and dealers will reprogram the TPMS module, free of charge. The recall began on October 23, 2014. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P63.

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2010 Dodge Ram 3500, Ram 4500/5500, 2010-2011 Dodge Dakota, 2010-2014 Dodge Challenger, 2010-2015 Dodge Challenger, Chrysler 300, and 2010-2016 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. Upon deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to explode.

Risk: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could explode with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.

Remedy: Owners are advised not to drive their vehicle until the recall repair is complete. Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began February 4, 2019. Risk: A separated or severed seat belt buckle strap will result in an inoperable seat belt, increasing the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

Remedy: FCA US will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's seat belt buckle, free of charge. Interim notices informing owners of the safety risk were mailed November 19, 2019. Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture

From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 Blomquist Report at www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/documents/expert_report-hrblomquist.pdf.Consequently, all frontal inflators using propellant 2004 that do not contain a "desiccant" (a substance that traps and holds moisture) in US vehicles are under recall. These "non-desiccated" inflators either have been or are required to be replaced.In some cases, the remedy part for these recalled inflators was, or will be, an inflator using either propellant 2004 or 2004L that does contain a desiccant. None of these "desiccated" remedy parts (which were installed in older model year vehicles) are currently under recall for a degradation concern. Certain subsets of desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004 for use as original equipment, however, have been recalled for a degradation concern. All Takata inflators produced with propellant 2004L contain desiccant, and none of these desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L are under recall for a degradation concern. There have been no reported field ruptures in any non-recalled desiccated PSAN inflators.It is understood that desiccants fully saturate at some threshold, at which point any additional moisture will not be captured. This means the degradation process observed in non-desiccated inflators using propellant 2004 may also occur in non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004, assuming additional moisture enters the inflator and high temperature cycling occurs. Based on available information, desiccant saturation can occur within the first five years in the worst environments, and the time required for full saturation is affected by multiple factors. While no present safety risk has been identified, further work is needed to evaluate the future risk of non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004.Three entities -- Takata (now known as TK Global), the Independent Testing Coalition, and Exponent -- have been studying the long-term behavior of Takata desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004L (as well as 2004) in the presence of moisture and temperature cycling. The research efforts, which include development of predictive modeling techniques and field sample analysis, are ongoing. To date, none of the researchers have identified field evidence showing that propellant 2004L is undergoing a degradation process that leads to aggressive deployment and potential rupture. However, the time in service of such inflators remains short compared to that of the inflators using propellant 2004. Further study is needed to assess the long-term safety of desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L.The Office of Defects Investigation is opening this investigation to examine whether a safety defect related to propellant degradation exists in non-recalled desiccated PSAN frontal inflators manufactured by Takata. This investigation will require extensive information on Takata production processes and surveys of inflators in the field. Lists of recall actions that may have used desiccated PSAN inflators as remedy parts, as well as the makes and models originally manufactured with them, is available with the downloadable version of this document (see nhtsa.gov/recalls?nhtsaId=EA21002 -- note this information is subject to change/revision as the investigation proceeds). This investigation does not supersede EA15-001, which remains open.

Seat belt buckle bracket failure

On July 17, 2019, NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation (PE) 19-008 after receiving three Vehicle Owner Questionnaire (VOQ) reports alleging the driver's side seat belt buckle separated from the seat frame, rendering the seat belt non-functional. The VOQs involved model year (MY) 2015 and 2016 Jeep Wrangler (JK platform) that were configured for right-hand drive (RHD) use. On August 8, 2019, ODI issued an information request (IR) letter to FCA.The scope of the IR included all JK Wrangler produced for sale in the U.S. (both left- and right-hand drive), and amongst other things, requested any reports or allegations of driver's seat belt bracket failures on these vehicles. In its review of FCA's response, ODI determined that approximately 1.7 million JK Wrangler were produced from MY 2007 to 2018, about 16,000 of which were configured for RHD. ODI notes that the RHD Wrangler are typically used for rural postal delivery which often experience a more severe duty cycle. Also RHD JK was was not produced in MY 2007.As explained in the IR response, FCA identified three distinct populations of JK Wrangler concerning the driver's seat belt bucket bracket; specifically the MY 2007-2018 LHD (~1.7M units), the MY 2008-2010 RHD (4,563 units), and the MY 2011-2018 RHD (11,463 units) populations.FCA provided details on the designs used in each of these populations, identifying specific differences deemed pertinent to the strength and durability of each unique bracket design. FCA further reviewed its analysis of the complaint and warranty data identified under the IR, and noting that it had not identified any allegations of bracket failures on the LHD population, and only one allegation on the MY 2008-2010 RHD vehicles. By comparison, FCA identified 24 allegations of bracket failure for the MY 2011-2018 RHD JK, including two reports duplicative of the VOQs. Neither the FCA nor the VOQ reports allege an injury or fatality due to bracket failure. Based on this analysis, FCA decided to conduct a safety recall for the MY 2011-2018 RHD JK population. On September 30, 2019, FCA submitted a Defect Information Report initiating NHTSA Safety Recall 19V-680 (FCA No. VA6). Under the recall action, FCA will replace the driver's seat belt bracket on MY 2011-2018 RHD Jeep JK Wrangler. The repair will be conducted free of charge.In view of FCA's recall action, and its explanations of the scope of that action, ODI is closing PE19-008. ODI will continue to monitor the non-recalled RHD, and the LHD JK Wrangler for evidence of seat belt bracket failure and will take further action if warranted.The three VOQ reports cited above can be reviewed at NHTSA.gov under the following reference numbers:11190251, 11218472, 11231639.

Electrical overstress

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation to determine if the failure of airbags to deploy during severe crashes, in certain vehicles, was the result of a safety related defect.  During the investigation a complex failure was studied that can result in non-deployment of subject vehicle air bags and other restraint system devices in severe crash events. The subject vehicles may be equipped with an airbag control unit (ACU) for the supplemental restraint system (SRS) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) manufactured by ZF-TRW.  The ECU receives signals from crash sensors mounted in the vehicle and deploys the vehicle air bags and seat belt pretensioners in accordance with manufacturer design specifications.  The ECU in the subject vehicles contains a model DS84 application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) which controls the communication of the crash sensor signal, firing commands (i.e., when to deploy the airbag(s) and/or pretensioners), and fault information (e.g., diagnostic trouble codes). In September 2016, FCA announced recall 16V-668 for certain model year (MY) 2010 to 2014 Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep products manufactured with the subject ZF-TRW ACU.  In this recall, FCA discussed an EOS condition that resulted in a failure of the subject DS84 ASIC, which caused air bag non-deployment.  FCA noted that the defect condition had only been observed in vehicles equipped with sensor harnessing routed across the front of the vehicle.  Other FCA vehicles that also used the subject ACU, but were not equipped with cross-car harnessing, had not experienced EOS failures, despite similar time in service. During the course of this investigation, ODI sent two separate Information Request (IR) letters to six vehicle manufactures (including FCA, Hyundai, Honda, Kia, Mitsubishi, and Toyota) and one IR letter to ZF-TRW.  These IR letters resulted in ODI receiving comprehensive data from these manufacturers and suppliers. Studies of this data found that the DS84 ASIC does not have sufficient protection against negative electrical transients or electrical overstress (“EOS”) that can be generated in certain severe crashes.  An electrical transient occurs when the electrical power supplied to a circuit changes momentarily over a short duration of time.   In these severe crash cases, the crash sensors and other powered wiring can be damaged and short circuited so as to create a negative electrical transient of sufficient intensity and duration (that are outside the vehicle manufacturer's specification) to damage the ASIC before the restraint device deployment signal is received by the SRS ECU.  This damaged signal can lead to incomplete or nondeployment of the air bags and/or pretensioners.  Airbag non-deployment and/or lack of pretensioner operation can increase the risk or severity of injury in a crash.A total of 8 fatalities and 14 injuries were associated with known EOS events. The common element in all investigated manufacturers vehicles is the SRS ECU containing a DS84 ASIC manufactured by ZF-TRW.  The risk associated with the ASIC is equally shared among all OEMS involved in the investigation.  The actual real-world risk can be mitigated by other factors which were assessed by ODI during this investigation. The first mitigating factor involves protections built into the ACU design which protect the DS84 ASIC from damage.  There are multiple strategies and levels of protection employed by different OEMs that provide effective EOS mitigation.  The two most common strategies at the ACU level are circuit protection diodes on the remote senor signal lines, and current limiting resistors that protect critical components. The second mitigating factor is found at the vehicle level and involves the location and routing of the wires leading from the crash sensors to the SRS ECU.  If the wires are well protected in a crash and are not routed with other power wires carrying large currents, the risk for an EOS event is significantly reduced or eliminated. These design specific factors combine to produce a spectrum of risk for the vehicles equipped with ACUs using the DS84 ASIC.  Given the many of years of field exposure, it is possible to divide the subject population into two groups; vehicles which have experienced EOS events, and vehicles which have not experienced EOS field events. Four of the six OEMs involved in this investigation have experienced EOS field events on at least one of their models equipped with a DS84 ASIC.  All vehicle models (including the Toyota models identified in the Failure Report Summary of the opening resume for this investigation) with field events have been recalled.  In an abundance of caution, ODI kept this investigation open five years to monitor field performance and did not identify any field events on vehicles not included in existing safety recalls. Given the spectrum of risk identified in this investigation and that all vehicles with a demonstrated unreasonable risk have been recalled, ODI is closing this investigation. ODI is closing this investigation with the following manufacturer safety recalls: 16V-668, 18E-043, 18V-137, 18V-363, and 20V-024.  With the recall actions taken by the subject vehicle and equipment manufacturers, this investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exists on other model or model year vehicles outside of the recall scopes. The agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

In a letter dated August 21, 2014, the Center for Auto Safety (CAS) petitioned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to initiate a defect investigation of alleged failures associated with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) installed in Chrysler SUV?s, trucks, and vans beginning in the 2007 model year. The petitioner alleges that TIPM defects may result in engine stall, airbag non-deployment, failure of fuel pump shutoff resulting in unintended acceleration, fire, and other symptoms. On September 25, 2014, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened DP14-004 to evaluate the petition for a grant or deny decision. ODI analyzed complaint data provided by CAS as well as complaints submitted to ODI from consumers. In total, there were 296 complaints submitted by the petitioner in the original petition and five supplements, including 271 complaints related to the subject vehicles equipped with TIPM-7. Approximately 3 percent of CAS complaints are related to vehicles equipped with TIPM-6 and ODI?s review of these complaints did not identify any safety defect trends. ODI conducted a detailed review of complaints narratives submitted by CAS and consumers including careful analysis of vehicle repair histories, warranty claims obtained from the manufacturer and any available Customer Assistance Inquiry reports (CAIR). Analysis of the field data indicated that MY2011-2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango vehicles exhibited significantly higher complaint rates related to fuel pump relay (FPR) failures than other subject vehicles. In a September 3, 2014 letter to NHTSA, Chrysler submitted a Defect Information Report (DIR) identifying a defect in the FPR within the TIPM-7 which can result in a no start or stall condition in approximately 188,723 model year (MY) 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK) and Dodge Durango (WD) vehicles manufactured from January 5, 2010 through July 20, 2011 (14V-530).In a February 24, 2015 letter, Chrysler submitted a second DIR expanding the scope of the FPR defect condition to include an additional 338,216 MY 2012 through 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured from September 17, 2010 through August 19, 2013 and MY 2012 through 2013 Dodge Durango vehicles manufactured from January 18, 2011 through August 19, 2013 (15V-115).ODI analysis of the CAS allegations of TIPM defects resulting in stall while driving, airbag non-deployment, unintended acceleration, fire and other faults identified a single defect condition related to 1 of over 60 different circuits in the TIPM assembly. The most common effect of this defect condition, related to the fuel pump relay, was a no-start concern, but it could also result in stall while driving (76 complaints). No valid evidence was presented in support of claims related to airbag non-deployment, unintended acceleration or fire resulting from TIPM faults and these claims were found to be wholly without merit based on review of the field data and design of the relevant systems and components.Except insofar as the petitioner's contentions relate to the defect condition addressed by the Chrysler recalls, the factual bases of the petitioner's contentions that any further investigation is necessary are unsupported. In our view, additional investigation is unlikely to result in a finding that a defect related to motor vehicle safety exists or a NHTSA order for the notification and remedy of a safety-related defect as alleged by the petitioner at the conclusion of the requested investigation.
