[XXX] [XXX] / [XXX] [XXX] 2010 Toyota Sienna Possible Shifter Interlock Failure: On [XXX] my [XXX] child found his way into the driver’s seat of our 2010 Toyota Sienna while the vehicle was parked in the driveway. According to my wife, there were no keys in the vehicle, and the vehicle was in park. In an instant, my wife (who was outside the van) helplessly observed the van begin to roll backward down the driveway and then across the sidewalk (on our side of the street), then across the street, and then across the sidewalk on the other side of the street and into the neighbor’s yard where it finally came to a rest. She said she heard something like grinding gears. I presume my son was trying to put it in park. Thankfully no property damage or personal injuries occurred during the incident. I [XXX] ) was not home when this happened. When I returned home, I inspected the van to see if my son was able activate the emergency shift lock release. I found the cover was intact and evidence of tampering was not observed. I then checked to see if I was able to pull the shifter out of park. Initially, I was unable to, but after a few tries and a little force, I was able to pull the shifter out of park (no keys in ignition, no brake compression, vehicle off) and the van began to roll. Our driveway is somewhat sloped. I replicated this procedure several times: a little force and a little wiggle and clunk, the shifter released and the van rolled. I discovered there was a recall for this very problem on 2010 Sienna’s (NHTSA Recall No.: 17V-657). I entered the Sienna’s VIN number on NHTSA’s website and found no active recall for the VIN number entered. I contacted Toyota of North America (1-800-331-4331) and chose to advocate and spoke to an agent and reported the problem. She was able to determine that the vehicle had been under the recall, but the van was “repaired” in 2020 which is the year we bought the van INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Electrical SystemJan 2023 · ODI 11499914 · fireDetails +Close −
We recently had a full diagnostic check done on our vehicle (199 point at Parkway Automotive in Little Rock, Arkansas) that listed some components in need of repair. The only part involving the electrical system needing repair was our battery which was testing as no longer holding enough charge. We took the vehicle to Sam's Club in North Little Rock, AR within the last 2-3 weeks and had the battery replaced with a new Duracell with 3 year warranty. We drove away with no issues with the vehicle and used it for local driving without issues for those 2-3 weeks. The morning of Thursday, December 29, 2022 we started the car to drive to our church about 2 miles away with our four young children (1, 5, 8, 10). In the short drive, dash lights were flickering and the nav/audio screen system was turning off and restarting. Upon arrival at the church, as we were parking the car, gray smoke began to come from the hood quickly. The children were all still strapped in seatbelts and carseat, so we quickly unloaded them from the car and took them inside the building. While we were unloading them from the vehicle we observed the following: -black smoke pouring from driver's side hood -sparks falling on the ground from driver's side engine compartment, near bumper -spurts of fire coming from the hood and below the bumper on driver's side -charring and melting coming from the vents/lights where each child was seated in the 2nd and 3rd row seating After calling the fire department and locating a fire extinguisher, the fire quickly grew into an uncontrollable blaze so we all went inside the building as quickly as possible to avoid injury. Shortly thereafter, the battery itself seemed to explode (a loud explosion was heard and then a smaller one) and the driver windshield was blown. The fire was large enough to seem to be traveling toward the gas tank and we were afraid of a big disaster. The fire department then arrived and extinguished the fire and made a report.

Massive Oil Leak and Loss of Oil Pressure: Oil line burst while driving on the HWY coming back home from a work. Loss nearly all of the oil, but there were no warning lights. Pulled over into gas station. Checked dip stick, completely dry! Catastrophic oil leak without warning. Could have been stalled on the HWY and caused major ACCIDENT. Tried to refill oil but it all leaked out as soon as I started engine. Research around the web and find out that this is a known issue to Toyota for using rubber VVTI oil line - Part # 15772-31030 Now this part is made all metal!

Seat BeltsJun 2021 · ODI 11422816Details +Close −
One day when we tried to buckle the driver's side seat belt, little pieces flew out of the receiver side and it will no longer buckle. We took it to the Toyota dealer in N Syracuse NY and were told it would be a cost of $212 to replace and that it would be a two-week wait for the part to come in. This means that the owner and her two young babies would have to drive in an unsafe car, ILLEGALLY for two weeks putting her life and the life of her children in danger. The Toyota dealer inspected the seat belt and confirmed it was a defect and had failed. I called Toyota customer service and was told that there were no recalls for this defect and they would take no responsibility for the dangerous situation or consequences because the car was no longer under warranty. In fact, this is a problem that has been affecting many owners as indicated by an online search. Also, the fact that the dealer has to wait two weeks to obtain the part indicates that this seatbelt has failed many owners and they have used up the supply. This should be a recall situation but Toyota will take no responsibility.

POWER SLIDING DOORS JAMMED IN THE CLOSED (OR PARTIALLY OPEN POSITION) AS THE DOOR CABLE GOT HUNG UP IN THE SLIDING MECHANISM. BOTH DOORS OF OUR VEHICLE ARE NOW AFFECTED. DRIVER SIDE SLIDING DOOR FAILED TO OPEN FULLY IN JAN 2017 - IT OPENED ABOUT 4 INCHES AND WOULD STOP. PASSENGER SIDE SLIDING DOOR FAILED TO OPEN AT ALL IN MAY 2017, IT WOULD MOVE A FRACTION OF AN INCH WHEN TRYING TO OPEN AND THEN GET JAMMED. THE VAN HAS SEEN MODERATE USE, AND THE DOORS WERE OPENED WITH THE AUTOMATIC MECHANISM (USED THE BUTTON) OVER 99% OF THE TIME. THE WEAR ON THE DOOR OPENING MECHANISM WAS NOT CAUSED BY INAPPROPRIATE MANUAL OPENING. AFTER THE PROBLEM, IN BOTH CASES THE ONLY WAY TO BE ABLE TO OPEN THE DOORS WAS TO PHYSICALLY BREAK THE GUIDE CABLES - WHICH WAS DONE FROM OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. IT IS UNLIKELY TO BE DONE FROM INSIDE THE VEHICLE DUE TO HOW THE PERSON WOULD NEED TO STAND AND THE STRENGTH THEY COULD GENERATE, ESPECIALLY DURING AN EMERGENCY EVENT. FIX FOR THE PROBLEM IS OVER $1000 FOR EACH DOOR. REMEDY FOR ME IS THAT I CUT THE BROKEN CABLES AND WE OPEN THE DOORS MANUALLY NOW. I BELIEVE THERE IS A RECALL THAT COVERS THIS PROBLEM FOR 2004-2007 SIENNAS, BUT HAS NOT BEEN EXTENDED TO COVER THE SAME MODEL FOR YEARS 2008-2010. SNIPPET OF THIS IS: CERTAIN 2004 TO 2007 MODEL YEAR SIENNA VEHICLES EXTENSION OF WARRANTY COVERAGE FOR POWER SLIDING DOOR CABLE ASSEMBLY THIS CONCERNS THE CABLE ASSEMBLY, NOT THE LATCH ASSEMBLY.

TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 1998 THROUGH 2010 SIENNA PASSENGER VEHICLES MANUFACTURED BETWEEN AUGUST 7, 1997 AND JANUARY 4, 2010, CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN OR ORIGINALLY SOLD IN CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, KENTUCKY, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WASHINGTON DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGINIA, AND WISCONSIN. THE SUBJECT VEHICLES ARE EQUIPPED WITH THE SPARE TIRE STOWED UNDER THE VEHICLE. Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain models interspersed through model years 2009 through 2013 as follows: model year 2009-2012 Tacoma, 4Runner, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Prius, and RAV4; model year 2009-2010 Avalon, FJ Cruiser, and Highlander Hybrid; model year 2010-2013 model year Corolla, Sienna and Tundra; model year 2009-2013 Highlander and Venza; model year 2012 Prius V; and model year 2010-2012 Sequoia. During modification by SET to include accessories such as leather seat covers, seat heaters or headrest DVD systems, these vehicles may not have had the passenger seat occupant sensing system calibration tested. Without passing the calibration test, the occupant sensing system may not operate as designed.
Risk: If the front passenger seat occupant sensing system is out of calibration, the front passenger airbags may not deploy or they may deploy inappropriately for the passenger's size and position. This could increase the risk of personal injury during the event of a vehicle crash necessitating airbag deployment.
Remedy: Southeast Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will test the sensitivity of the occupant detection sensors, and recalibrate them as necessary. The recall began on March 21, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2004-2011 Sienna vehicles originally sold in, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. The affected vehicles have a spare tire carrier assembly mounted under the vehicle whose attachment cable may corrode due to high concentrations of road salt splashing onto the spare tire carrier.
Risk: If the carrier cable is corroded due to road salt, the spare tire may separate from the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Toyota sent owners in August 2014 an interim notification to advise owners of the recall and that dealers will perform an interim remedy to remove the spare tire and relocate it to the luggage compartment, free of charge. Owners are being mailed a second letter as parts become available and dealers will replace the spare tire carrier assembly with an improved one, free of charge. The remedy campaign is being performed in phases. The first phase of the recall began July 7, 2015. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. NOTE: 2004-2010 Siennas subject to this recall were subject to recall campaign 10V-160 initiated in 2010. Those owners are advised that they must have their vehicles remedied again under this campaign and that having the earlier recall completed did not remedy their vehicles. Additionally, model year 1998-2003 Siennas were recalled as part of safety recall 10V-160. Owners of those vehicles that have not had not the remedy performed on their vehicles, should contact their Toyota dealer to schedule a free repair.

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2005-2007 and 2009-2010 Toyota Sienna vehicles. In the affected vehicles, due to a problem within the shift lock assembly, the shift lever may be moved out of the 'Park' position without depressing the brake pedal.
Risk: If the shift lever can be moved from the "Park" position without depressing the brake pedal and the parking brake is not applied, the vehicle may roll, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the shift lock solenoid and reapply the grease, free of charge. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.
