The upper top grille mold detached from the vehicle while traveling at highway speed (about 65 mph). It hit the hood, which it scratched and flew off into the air, above the vehicle and in the way of oncoming traffic. Fortunately, no one was behind me so the part did not hit another vehicle. Vehicle had around 65k miles when this occured. I have contacted a local dealership who informed me that while many similar vehicles have a recall for this issue my VIN is not included in that recall.

The upper hood trim that sits above the grill, flew off on the interstate at approx 80 mph. Upon research this is a common problem for this make and model in years of 22-24. GM has a service bulletin for this issue as well as the NHTSA. For this particular failure. There was no warning and when I contacted GM they were unwilling to assist as "service bulletins" are not recalls and the vehicle is out of warranty. There was no warning, no indicator, it just blew off and I had no idea until I got home and the piece was missing. I was unable to locate the part on the interstate, however I was able to keep all of the pieces attached to the vehicle for evidence and support. I am beside myself anyone thought this was acceptable to sustain the force of air flow!

The contact owns a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, there was an engine knock at start-up, and the engine intermittently hesitated and skipped. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, who performed a PICO test on the engine, and the engine passed. Later, while hauling a trailer, there was a rattling sound coming from the engine. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, who diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The engine, radiator, and oil cooler were replaced, and the vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 17,000.

Oct 2025 I took my truck into my local GMC dealer for 6.2 recall. I was told it passed the testing. 6/12/26 driving about 70mph on highway and lost all acceleration. Warning stating engine oil hot,/ pull over and idle engine. Already using 0w40 oil for approx 8momnths. Oil changed approx 3 wks before this incident. I was able to pull to the shoulder w/in 1/4 mile. While the truck was still moving about 3 mph it went into park and shut off. The vehicle would not turn back on. Oil level was full. For about $300 I was able to have the truck towed to a local dealer (about 2hrs from my home) and have my trailer towed off the highway. 6/15/26 I was notified by a local dealer that the engine was seized and that this was probably the recall issue. I contacted my local dealer who had my truck towed to their location. On 6/19/26 I was told by local dealer rep that they had ordered an engine for my truck and that I was third in line. On 6/26/26 I was informed by the dealer that he engine is on an indefinite backorder nationwide. On 6/30/26 I received a call from GM giving me a case number and getting contact info for my local dealer. I was advised that someone would contact me within 48 business hours. 7/3/26 I was contacted by my case advisor from GM. Still no idea when replacement engines might be available. I inquired about a buyback since I need a truck for work/personal life. I advised her that I had already cancelled one vacation (towing an RV...my loaner Buick Encore won't work) and would probably have to cancel another. I tried to explain that farming doesn't work well with the loaner either. I was told that another advisor would look into a buyback situation. On 7/8/26 I received a call from GM advising that my engine had shipped on 7/6/26 and to expect a call the following week with an update on completion.

More importantly other people's safety is put at risk b/c a long SHARP plastic piece is flying off a large truck driving down the highway!! Yes, Glenn Polk has seen the damage and can confirm. No, no one else has inspected it yet but you gladly can, it doesn't take a genius to see that the cheap POS plastic was terrible engineering by GM. I was driving down the highway and the front Upper Grille Deflector flew off while at highway speeds. Due to the nature of being on a highly congested bridge, the grill piece flying off could've seriously injured not only myself, but other motorist around me. There is currently a GM recall (N242490120) out however, it only affects the 2022 model trucks. This makes no sense as this issue has been reported via threads and discussions on the internet for 2023 year models like mine numerous times. This is a serious issue and should be recalled just like the 2022 models. Not only am I now paying for a manufactuer defect out of pocket, but who's to say that the "new" part doesn't do the same thing and either I or another motorist is seriously injured or worse...killed.

Traveling had an engine light come on. stopped at a dealer they inspected found multiple errors reset engine light and said continue home. when home bring into my dealer. Got home that night went to start truck, all kinds of errors started popping up on the dash, vehicle would not turn over at all. Had to call wrecker to have brought into shop. First issue could not put the truck into neutral at all, so they had to pull in park to put unto the bed of wrecker (that seems to be a very poor design of the truck). Brought truck into shop received a call two days later that it is fixed and working fine. Went to the shop asked what the problem was, told there is a ground strap under the truck that is like the main part to make sure everything works regarding electronics. The dealer has had to repair many of these ground straps, they are exposed to the elements and come loose I was told. They had two other GMC trucks in the shop with the same issue that day. the ground strap is exposed to the elements do not understand why this would not be covered just like a battery lead to stop from corroding and have to clean it or replace it. Not to mention there is no where in the service manual I can find about any maintenance that needs to be done with it. Appears to be a very bad design from the car manufacture.

While traveling at highway speed during rush hour commute, the vehicle lost engine power and stalled. While coasting, I tried to restart the engine several times without success. Before coming to a stop, I attempted to get to the shoulder safely. Unfortunately, a portion of the vehicle was left partially in the lane and on the shoulder. Once I was completely stopped, I tried to put the electronic shift control into neutral so I could push the vehicle safely to the shoulder. The shifter would not allow me to shift into neutral and other override methods researched failed to work. I continued to try and restart the vehicle without success. I was in an unsafe position during rush hour commute for about 50 minutes until roadside assistance arrived and loaded and towed the vehicle. There was no warning of the issue prior to the incident. A code (P129F-Fuel Pump Driver Control Module Speed Signal Incorrect) was produced after the stall occurred via my GMC app. My vehicle was towed to my local dealership for service, but have not received the vehicle back at the time of reporting.

[XXX] [XXX] Phone: [XXX] Vehicle Information: Year: 2023 Make: GMC Model: Sierra Denali Ultimate Engine: 6.2L V8 VIN: [XXX]: Mileage: Approximately 52,000 miles BACKGROUND: I previously had the engine serviced under a GM recall campaign related to known 6.2L V8 engine concerns. Despite that repair, the vehicle has since experienced two separate highway-speed loss-of-propulsion events. COMPLAINT The vehicle suddenly lost power while being driven at highway speed. No warning lights, check-engine lights, reduced-engine-power messages, or transmission warnings appeared. In both incidents, I was forced to coast to the shoulder of the roadway. The vehicle would not resume normal operation until it was stopped and restarted. This condition has now occurred twice. SAFETY CONCERN The sudden loss of propulsion during highway operation creates an immediate safety hazard and increases the risk of collision due to the inability to maintain speed with surrounding traffic. REQUESTED NHTSA ACTION 1. Record this complaint as a repeat loss-of-propulsion event. 2. Evaluate whether similar complaints exist involving 2023 GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate vehicles equipped with the 6.2L V8. 3. Consider this complaint in any current or future investigations involving loss of propulsion, stalling, engine failure, or powertrain concerns. 4. Review whether vehicles previously repaired under GM recall campaigns continue to experience similar failures. [XXX]: Update – Vehicle Disabled and Awaiting Engine Replacement Since filing my initial concerns regarding repeated loss-of-propulsion events, the condition of my vehicle has significantly worsened. During the dealership's inspection and test drive, the engine reportedly failed and locked up. The vehicle could not be restarted and required further diagnostics. On June 20, 2026, I received a text message from the dealership that the required engine parts remain on backorder INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I, other vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians were at risk. That vehicle could have come down on the highway, causing a vehicle pileup, which could have caused mass casualties. 3. The problem is known; the service advisor informed me the vehicle's engine needed to be replaced. 4. There were absolutely zero warning lamps or My GMC app alerts to announce vehicle issues. I have attached the last two maintenance records I have on hand. I suspect the dealership will try to deny responsibility for repairs. I was driving down a long road at roughly 50 mph when all of a sudden the grille deflector detaches from my bumper and hits my windshield causing me to swerve thinking I had hit something. I was almost in an accident. I believe there is a recall for this exact thing but only for 2022 models not 2023. No it has not been inspected I tried to call GM to get guidance and see if it could possibly be covered seeing as it is a manufacture error but was denied. As I was driving down the highway the hood front molding flew off and took a chunck of paint off my GMC 2023 AT4, hitting a elderly ladies windshield we pulled over there was no damage to her car thankfully, she was very shakin and gave me an ear full. I have reached out to GMC even took it in and left it overnight and they say it is not under the recall and it will cost $1200.00 to fix. We currently own 3 GMC's, this one is mine (a woman) and she is my baby. I do not think it is fair that my truck matches the exactly damage you see on the trucks on the recall list, a service man also told me that they replaced one of them that was recalled and shortly after it to broke and flew off. If there is anything someone can do help, I know I am not the only one this is happening too. Thank you J

Electrical SystemJun 2026 · ODI 11743475Details +Close −
The plastic upper rail glass guide frame on the rear sliding window assembly of my 2023 GMC Sierra developed structural micro-cracks during normal vehicle operation. This manufacturing defect is a known issue tracked internally by the manufacturer under Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) #18-NA-383.This structural failure allows severe water intrusion into the passenger cabin. The leaking water runs straight down the inside back wall of the cab, completely flooding and corroding sensitive, factory-installed electronic safety modules mounted directly beneath the leak path. This continuous water intrusion caused the catastrophic electrical failure and corrosion of the video processing control module located behind the rear seat. The sudden failure of this module completely disabled the rearview digital mirror camera and the 360-degree perimeter driver assistance cameras, creating immediate blind spots and an active driving safety hazard while operating the vehicle. The vehicle was inspected and repaired by an authorized dealership, confirming the rear window leak as the direct cause of the electronic destruction. The out-of-pocket cost to replace the water-damaged safety components was $2,747.00. Because the manufacturer refused to cover the replacement of the defective rear glass assembly, the structural leak remains unresolved. This active water intrusion continues to flood the cabin, creating a health hazard via mold growth and guaranteeing that the newly replaced safety cameras will inevitably short-circuit and fail again.

Model: Sierra Denali Ultimate Engine: 6.2L V8 VIN: [XXX] Mileage at Most Recent Incident: Approximately 52,000 miles Safety Complaint Summary I am submitting this complaint to report a recurring loss-of-propulsion and engine power event involving my 2023 GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate equipped with the 6.2L V8 engine. This vehicle has experienced two separate incidents in which it suddenly lost power while being operated at highway speeds. During both events, the vehicle unexpectedly lost propulsion without warning and without any apparent driver input or mechanical indication beforehand. No warning lights, check-engine lights, reduced-engine-power messages, service transmission messages, or other warning indicators were displayed prior to the failure. The vehicle simply lost power while traveling in traffic. During both occurrences, I was forced to safely maneuver the vehicle to the shoulder of the roadway while rapidly losing speed among surrounding traffic. Once stopped, the vehicle would not resume normal operation until it was restarted. After restarting, the vehicle appeared to operate normally; however, the fact that this condition has now occurred twice raises significant concerns regarding the reliability and safety of the vehicle. Safety Risk This condition presents a significant and immediate safety risk because sudden loss of propulsion during highway operation can leave the driver unable to maintain speed, safely merge, maneuver, or avoid surrounding traffic. The unexpected reduction in speed creates the potential for rear-end collisions, loss of vehicle control, or other traffic accidents, particularly when operating on high-speed roadways. Because the vehicle provided no warning before losing power, there is little opportunity for a driver to take preventive action. After driving my vehicle for a short period of time I stopped to go shopping. When I returned to my vehicle I started it as usual and the check engine light illuminated. I began driving and within 0.25 miles I received an info enter message that stated my vehicle would have reduced acceleration and to please drive safely. My engine fans became noticeably louder and ran the entire trip home (about 15 minutes). After pulling into my driveway I sat in the vehicle and listen to the fans continue to operate. Additionally, my OnStar system, WiFi, and navigation systems quit working. A P1098 Code was returned when using a diagnostic code device. Disconnecting the battery would cause the check engine light to extinguish and for the truck to operate without reduced acceleration; however, OnStar, navigation and WiFi would not work. After shutting off the engine and then restarting the check engine light would once again illuminate and the reduced acceleration message reappeared.

This vehicle has experienced repeated catastrophic engine and drivability failures since purchase and has now undergone four engine replacements under warranty. Despite these major repairs, the vehicle continues to experience dangerous shutdown/stalling conditions. The primary safety issue occurs while braking or coming to a stop. The engine will suddenly shut off unexpectedly, creating a serious traffic hazard and leaving the vehicle unable or difficult to restart. This has occurred multiple times and creates a dangerous situation in traffic and at intersections. The vehicle remains under manufacturer warranty, however the defect has not been successfully repaired despite extensive service attempts and multiple complete engine replacements. The condition substantially impairs the safety, reliability, and use of the vehicle. This vehicle was acquired through a fleet/lease arrangement for company use and was not purchased for resale. It is a light-duty 1500-series pickup with approximately 7,100–7,200 GVWR used as a company vehicle. Complete repair history, diagnostic records, warranty repairs, and engine replacement documentation can be obtained from: Stevens GMC Bristol, Connecticut The vehicle has been repeatedly presented for repair and the defect remains unresolved. This appears to be a serious ongoing safety-related defect involving engine shutdown/stalling while braking or stopping.

Received the run around that vehicle past all their initial inspection and test. They only replaced a VALVE LIFTER REPLACEMENTS BANK 2 without further assessment of the engine or components. I took my vehicle to another shop to conduct a thorough inspection and they found broken metal from the piston/skirt and likely connecting rod damage inside the crankcase. Broken piston skirt/piston material • Cylinder wall damage/scoring • Metal debris throughout lower end • Possible bent/broken connecting rod • Potential crankshaft/journal damage from debris circulation • Oil pickup area contaminated with metal Lifter failure leading to dropped valve/ piston contact • Rod bearing failure • Oil starvation • Spun bearing • Piston failure/detonation Advised GM Gunn Buick and GMC of the secondary engine inspection by another shop. Manager told me it was my issue now and they wouldn’t replace my engine it wasn’t there problem. I had to pay out of pocket for a new engine replacement due to the negligence of GM and their agency lack of maintenance and customer care and service

On April 1, 2026 at approximately 7pm the vehicle had a complete engine failure exiting an interstate. As I was slowing to exit the interstate the truck, without warning, lost power and locked up the rear wheels. I was able to safely exit onto the off ramp, but did partially block the off ramp for 45 minutes waiting on a tow truck. Once I came to a complete stop the dashboard began displaying numerous error codes, included "key missing, restart truck and shift to park, and start failure". The vehicle was part of the GM L87 engine recall but had previously passed the PICO test and was deemed OK to drive. I had the vehicle towed to the closest GMC dealership where it was diagnosed as an engine failure and the engine was locked up. The vehicle has been at the GMC dealership since the night of April 1, 2026 with no date given as to when it will be fixed. The vehicle had displayed no signs of any problems prior to the engine failure on April 1, 2026.

Driving on the highway and the top section of the grill (approx 4" x 50") broke loose and went over the cab of the truck. The piece didn't hit my truck or any other vehicle, but the driver behind me swerved to avoid it. All of the clips that hold the chrome piece to the vehicle are still attached to the body. I made contact with the local dealer's service dept. and was told my VIN was not in a recall for this issue. I contacted GM customer care and was told the recall hasn't been extended to my vehicle and that I would have to pay for the replacement. IF GM extends the recall to the other known issue model years I could be reimbursed. There seems to be numerous other complaints of this issue that aren't covered by GM.

I was driving at 65mph through a construction zone on my local freeway - through a construction zone. With cruise control on, my upper bezel portion of my grill detached. It slammed into my windshield and hit the semi behind me after bouncing off the road. Luckily, neither of us swerved drastically. However, with workers in the area, this could have been a catastrophic event. After contacting my local GM dealership, I was told "yeah, that just kind of happens from time to time". When relaying that information to the GM Customer service team, they told me to ask for a courtesy credit from the dealership as I was out of warranty on bumper to bumper. There were no prior issues with this part on my truck that I was aware of leading up to this event. It additionally caused damage to my windshield and roof.

I brought this truck brand new. Had issues the first couple days of purchase that was a quick fix, but as time went on things got worse. Truck always stalling out, engine has been replaced once already due to a recall and months after the first replacement, it stalled out on me again in the middle of the freeway and I just got a call from the dealership that it needs another new engine! How is this right! How is this safe! I could've lost my life on every occasion it has happened.

I took my truck in for routine maintenance. When i got it back and turn the truck on, the instrument cluster was completely black. I couldn't get it to turn on. I went back into the dealer and informed them of the issue. The claimed they had not done anything electrical The dealer has told me that they are not sure why it has stopped working but they did let me know they had to replace several instrument clusters with other customers. I am unsure if they had paid for the replacement or not. I've looked online as well and seen multiple GMC truck owners having the same issue and getting their instrument clusters replaced as well. I've noticed this is happening with 2022 models and above. Please look into. Thank you

On March 3rd 2026, I went to a doctors appointment. Halfway into the 50 minute drive, I noticed the on the infotainment screen that my GPS was still showing me being at home. It was working normally a couple days prior to parking the truck. After my Dr appointment, I did some online research and followed recommended procedure to do a hard reset of the infotainment/radio to try and refresh the signal. Didn't work so I checked the recommended fuse and it was good. Realized that the OnStar and truck's cellular/data was also not working. After more research, I found that it's a very commonly reported issue on 2022-2024 trucks. Apparently the Telematics module will freeze/glitch or fail. Took my truck down to American Chevrolet on April 13th for the Data Gateway Module recall# N242435631 and asked their service advisor if he could find out what's going on. After the recall was performed, he verified that the Telematics module is indeed dead but, because I'm at 39,000 miles, they could not fix it at no cost. The biggest reason why I've been driving this truck so frequently is because it's the safest truck we have and the Automatic Crash Response & Emergency GPS gives my girlfriend some piece of mind when traveling with our two sons. She now refuses to travel with me in the truck. I'm also upset that the cellular data is paid up until I believe March of 2027 and now I can't use services paid for but, I'm more concerned about the safety features that are no longer working. For this part to completely fail or lock up at under 40k miles is absolutely absurd. I'm going to request a Good Faith repair through GMC but, I want this to be documented. Thank you for your review of this problem.

I was driving down the road at 55 mph on 4/12/2026 and had let off the gas for a 45 mph zone when I experienced a violent downshift of the transmission that squealed the tires momentarily and felt like someone had hit me from behind. It startled me and caused me to lower my speed down to 20 mph. I continued driving to my destination and when I let off of the gas doing 45 mph for a slight curve I had another violent downshift that felt again like someone hit me from behind. I contacted a GMC dealer on 4/13.2026 to see if there was a recall on the transmission that I wasn't seeing online and was told no. I described what I experienced to their service department and was told to flush out the transmission fluid and replace the filter. I did experience another bad downshift at a slower speed (about 25 mph) on 4/13/2026. There wasn't any warnings or lights that came on when these three incidents occurred. When looking online I did see there was a similar recall for 2020-2022 GMC Sierra's where customers were experiencing similar violent transmission downshifts and am wondering if this issue is affecting more than just those three model years.

Investigations
3 NHTSA investigations on record
Investigations are agency reviews, not findings that a vehicle is defective.
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 36 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs) alleging engine failure in vehicles subject to Recall 25V274. In each VOQ, the engine had the recall remedy completed prior to the reported failure incident. Recall 25V-274 addresses vehicles equipped with a L87 6.2L V8 gas engine that experienced engine damage or failure. Recall 25V-274’s remedy includes an engine inspection. Based on the results of the inspection the vehicle will receive an oil change to a higher viscosity oil or an engine replacement. The complaints received allege failures of both remedies. ODI is opening this Recall Query (RQ) to assess the adequacy of the remedy for Recall 25V-274. To review the ODI reports cited in the Opening Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 1,157 reports of engine bearing failure failures in the L87 6.2L engine produced by General Motors (GM). Of the 1,157 reports received, 173 are outside of the scope of recall 25V-274. These engines are installed in Model Years (MY) 2019–2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, and 2021-2024MY Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe, GMC Yukon/Yukon XL, and Cadillac Escalade/Escalade ESV vehicles. The subject engine failures were investigated as part of a Preliminary Evaluation (PE25001). GM determined that these engine failures were due to multiple supplier manufacturing and quality issues. GM issued recall 25V-274 to address the supplier manufacturing and quality issues produced between March 1, 2021, and May 31, 2024. Based on the issuance of recall 25V-274, NHTSA has closed PE25001. ODI continues to receive a significant number of reports of engine failure in vehicles outside the scope of 25V-274. This presents a potential safety risk that warrants further investigation. ODI is opening this Engineering Analysis (EA) to further evaluate the scope and severity of the potential problem and to fully assess the potential safety-related issues of vehicles built outside the recall scope. To review the ODI reports cited in the Opening Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.
On January 16, 2025, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation PE25001 after receiving complaints and field reports concerning engine failures in MY2019-2024 GM’s full-size truck and SUV T1XX platform equipped with the L87 6.2L V8 engine. These complainants alleged engine bearing failures resulting in knocking and growling noises from the engine’s bottom end and in some cases more severe consequences such as broken connecting rods leading to engine damage, or engine failure. If the engine fails during vehicle operation, the vehicle will lose propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash. On April 24, 2025, GM issued recall 25V-274 to address the concern with L87 engines produced between March 1, 2021, and May 31, 2024. GM cited the root cause as a supplier manufacturing and quality issues. GM’s recall remedy will be either an oil change to an oil with a different viscosity or engine replacement depending on the results of the remedy inspection procedure. To date, ODI has received 1,157 allegations of engine bearing failure. GM submitted 55,464 reports in total, with 29,752 unique VINs. ODI continues to receive allegations of L87 engine failures which fall outside of the scope of recall 25V-274. Based on GM’s recall, ODI will close this PE. NHTSA will continue to investigate complaints of engine failure outside the scope of recall 25V-274 as part ofEngineering Analysis (EA25007). To review the ODI reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.
