2020 Volkswagen Tiguan

-After turning the car on and driving a short distance, the driver dashboard made a warning sound and flashed a warning about my 'ignition system' turning itself off. After that, the entire dash (the speedometer, gas gauge, the infotainment system, the internal climate controls, etc.) went blank. The warning told me to immediately pull the car over and turn it off. Because of this, the car's external brake lights and turn signal indicators also do not work. -Because this error is happening while the vehicle is moving and is on the roadway, I am driving blind in traffic without a way to signal lane changes or when I am coming to a stop. -The car has been worked on three separate times (the alternator was replaced twice and the battery once) for this issue, but the issue is still happening. It only happens when the weather gets to be above 80 degrees. -The vehicle was taken to AutoNation Volkswagen on July 6, 2026, and the service worker who I talked to said he's seen similar issues with Volkswagens in his two and a half years that he's worked in the service department (which lines up with the VW recall for other vehicles) after I described the issue to him. He confirmed those cases also happened when the outside temperatures were high. -No, no warning messages were displayed prior to the issue spontaneously happening back in May 2026. The first warning message I got was accompanied by the dashboard going completely black. -There is a VW Safety Recall (VW Campaign 28H7) and a NHTSA Recall (23V604) for the following VW models produced between 2019 - 2020: Golf, Golf AllTrack, Golf GTI, Golf Sportswagen, and the Jetta in the United States. -VW Customer care (called on July 6, 2026) declined to take down my complaint and said they could not enter my VIN to track the error for future recalls because I quote "didn't have a VW Customer Account." They provided me with a case number (#07599604) but I'm not sure anything was logged, and I didn't qualify for 'goodwill'.

Thermal expansion causes the electrical contacts to fail, triggering the systemic shutdown. The mechanic noted this part is on a severe nationwide backorder, indicating widespread failure. A known safety recall exists for the VW Jetta for an identical thermal ignition switch failure; however, the VW Tiguan—which utilizes the exact same turn-key ignition switch part—is not included. Multiple online automotive forums document identical hot-weather electrical failures among other Tiguan owners, proving this is a systemic hazard that warrants a safety recall.

Started to smell a musty odor in my 2020 Tiguan. Had no idea where it was coming from. Repeatedly wiped down and vacuumed the car; but the smell would not leave. Eventually my husband realized that the carpet in the back seat area under the floor mats was wet and smelled very bad. We used a wet/dry vac to pull the water out. But it only returned. Mold has now started to develop and grow on the carpet on both sides of the car in the back. This is very bad as I don't want me and my family breathing in mold. Also, I purchased the car in late March of 2024 and have only had it for just a little over two years. Since I've had the car we have gotten all routine maintenances completed including the 80K mile service. After reading online I see that this is a COMMON problem with VW Tiguan's where either the Sunroof leaks into the car or the A/C drain causes issue; in both cases it causes water leaks and mold. Tried calling VW and Audi of America to explain and see if they would buy the car back, but was advised due to the year and mileage they could not. This is sad to me because this is dealing with MOLD. VW is aware of these issues and seems to not care if people are left finishing out financing on a loan with a car that leaks and causes mold. I'm even seeing that on the NHTSA website complaints section for Tiguans, that multiple people have registered complaints about the same issue. I was driving and a vehicle was making a left hand turn, in the middle lane and they were in their lane and I was in mine, but the vehicle decided to use the automatic breaking which then cause me to have whiplash and it took a few seconds for the car to move and I had other cars behind me. Also, because this happened so quickly with no warning I first had to think did I hit the car, because I would have had no knowledge because the automatic stoping made noise and jolted me. So this is dangerous is all sorts of levels. If the other vehicle didn’t move and appeared to be fine and I had no damage to my car I would have not known.

Sunglass holder latch is broken on the 2020 Tiguan, it obstructs the rear view mirror completely. Volkswagen is charging to have it repaired although there are multiple complaints online about this issue. We have to use tape to keep it shut but the heat melts the adhesive and it falls constantly while driving.

While driving on freeway, the overhead console in my 2020 VW Tiguan suddenly fell down. At highway speeds , I thought I had been hit or something. It immediately obstructed the view through my wind shield and rear view. I had to rapidly pull over, narrowly averting a collision. Very dangerous. I see that this is a common problem in this model of car supposedly caused by the factory over torquing the screws that secure it.

While driving the car looses all dashboard lights, brake lights, blinkers. The motor stays running and it has a check starter system message. Has done it several times in the 2 weeks we have owned it. Seems to only occur when it is hot outside. It is very unsafe to loose break lights, blinkers, and all info on dash while driving with no warning. It gives a pull over immediately message right after it does it. SOS button is not working. Console fell out of roof of car earlier this summer (a national recall) and now the SOS error J949 is not working, and because the SOS button isnt working neither is the bluetooth. This is absolutely due to the faulty console that had to be rewired and clipped back into the roof of the vehicle. Currently not being covered by dealerships, it is absolutely a volkswagen fault in their upper electrical console issue.

Car beeped and displayed warning stating that Ignition will turn off and Check Starter System on four separate occasions, resulting in loss of all electrical power including but not limited to headlights, brake lights, console display, speedometer, dashboard lights, turn signals, hazard lights a/c, etc. The center console felt very warm. The car needed to be pulled over and ignition turned off for a prolonged period of time before restarting or else the issue would continue. The car does not always start right back up upon first try. It is unsafe to drive a car without any working electronics, especially at night. It is difficult and unsafe to pull over to a safe space without any working electronics, especially at night. I am reporting excessive engine oil consumption on my 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan. The vehicle consumes approximately one quart of oil per 1,000 miles. The vehicle has already undergone multiple diagnostic and repair attempts, including PCV-related repairs, all paid by the owner. Despite these repairs, the excessive oil consumption continues. Volkswagen and the dealership have stated that this level of oil consumption is “within range” and have required additional paid testing to further evaluate the issue, even though prior repairs failed to resolve it. I am concerned this reflects a broader engine design or component issue, as similar oil consumption problems have been widely reported by other Tiguan owners. I am experiencing the Driver Door Control Switch / EBS error. When this occurs my emergency break activates when I am driving, throwing me into a complete stop unexpectedly, pulls several check engine lights and a series of loud distracting alert sounds. This is extremely dangerous on the road and I’ve almost been rear-ended multiple times. I have brought my vehicle in to Volkswagen and European Specialty Auto Shop and they were not able to replicate the issue thus we’re not able to help me. There are several forums online that point to this being a recall issue with Volkswagen and yet my VIN number is showing as not affected. It is my understanding that this issue is being caused by a faulty driver door wiring harness. It is random when this issue occurs. Forums online have led me to believe it is due to weather fluctuations. At this point I no longer feel safe driving my vehicle. This needs to be escalated to a Volkswagen as a public safety concern.

The crankcase breather valve (PCV system) on my 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan failed, which caused catastrophic engine damage. VW Southtown diagnosed the engine as condemned and stated that a full engine replacement is required. Prior to the engine being condemned, I have already spent 3,787.59 in repairs at VW Southtown addressing recurring oil-related issues caused by the PCV valve being stuck closed. This caused an excessive crankcase pressure buildup of over 0.5 psi, as documented on the VW service repair order. The failure occurred while my husband was driving our [XXX] son in the car, and the warning message immediately displayed on the dashboard was: “12V battery not charging. Stop engine.” This sudden loss of engine function and dashboard warning posed a serious safety risk, as it could have resulted in loss of power or control while driving. The problem has been confirmed and documented by an authorized VW service department, including detailed repair orders and technical diagnosis. Prior to failure, there were oil-related warning lights and symptoms of excessive oil pressure, which appeared intermittently and indicated the underlying PCV failure. Research indicates this is a known, widespread issue affecting 2020–2021 Tiguans, with multiple owners reporting breather valve/PCV failures leading to oil loss, excessive crankcase pressure, and engine damage. Exceeding manufacturer recommended oil consumption. Car emits white smok out of the exhaust upon start up. The vehicle has been in the shop three times for this problem. Overhead console fell out of ceiling. Hanging by wires. This poses a danger especially when it falls during driving. It is a known vw issue. The plastic tabs at each of the 4 mounting points of the panel had cracked, and snapped causing the entire panel to fall down, dangling by the wires. Whether the mounting points failed due to heat or whether it was the mounting screws being over-tightened causing the plastic to crack is indeterminable, but it failed at each of the 4 mounting screw points.

The overhead console on the VW Tiguan fell out of the ceiling. This is actually the second time this has happened (was originally replaced by the dealership at time of purchase). It so far has only fallen out a little bit and I taped it a bit, but it's still coming out. It blocks visibility and exposes electrical wires of the car. If it should fall out during a sudden stop, the whole thing could hit me in the head and cause an accident as I am a shorter driver and closer to the windshield. VW extended the warranty coverage given this known defect, but completely dependent on miles driven versus age of car-so mine is unable to be fixed without a costly repair, that I still cannot trust will not happen again since this is a repeated issue. Many VW owners have the same problem and this is a safety hazard VW needs to address immediately.

The windshield wipers have been acting up, turning on unexpectedly when I use the turn signals, with no input from me, or when I drive over bumps, which seriously blocks my view and creates a danger on the road, especially in bad weather or during turns. This problem started showing up in October 2023 when the car had about 16,000miles, still under the 4-year/50,000-mile warranty. I took it to a dealership that month, but they checked the turn signals, scanned for faults, and found nothing, yet the issue didn’t go away. I tried again in September 2024 with another appointment, but the dealership wanted $250 for a diagnostic and to keep the car overnight, so I couldn’t proceed. The car and wiper system can be inspected if needed. There were no warning lights or messages beforehand; the trouble began in October 2023. Only the first dealership looked at it, with no fix. Aftermarket headlights were purchased online. Manufactured by AKD Aokeding in China. The headlights were installed by a ASE certified tech. The left low beam light went out within minutes while driving. Headlights were removed and internals inspected. The construction of these lights are very unsafe and would not meet any manufacturer specs. Not sure how these headlights would pass any safety compliance. The internal components were loose, unsecure and fragile. The wiring used was very thin approximately 28/30 gauge diameter. Right side headlight displayed excessive heat. These lights and company products need further review for further sales to the U.S. Other complains are online about this manufacturer.

The vehicle has had repeated failures of the oil filter adapter to block gasket. This gasket has been replaced three times in 41,000 miles. There appears to be a failure on the part of the gasket. The vehicle has been repaired for the third time, the gasket remains with the dealership where it was repaired. I do have photos of the gasket. A catastrophic failure would result in radiator fluid pouring out of the vehicle, causing the vehicle to come to a complete stop, regardless of location. This problem has occurred three times within 41,000 miles. The part has been inspected b the mechanic who replaced it. There is no warning other than to watch for leaks.

In my VW Tiguan, the sunglasses component that has the lights, the sunroof buttons, and hands-free microphone, dropped from the roof at the end of the day. It was one of the more warmer days that this happened on and I took it into the VW dealership to have them look at it the next day. The whole component blocked my ability to see and caused blind spots. The dealership gave me the car back with the light component taken out and everything else taped up. This caused a problem to not be able to see out of my rearview mirror. The dealership told me two weeks ago on 9/20 that until the part comes in, which is backordered and I still have an unknown timeframe of it coming in, I will be riding around with it taped up. I have found it difficult to drive even with it taped up because it will come down when the tape gives up. I am unsure of what the cause of it is, but know that this has been our hottest summer in the South since I've had my car.

I have been experiencing a noticeable delay in throttle response when accelerating, particularly when attempting to slowly merge into traffic. For example, when I press the accelerator to make a left turn, my Tiguan hesitates for approximately 2-3 seconds before responding, creating a significant safety concern as I find myself stuck in oncoming traffic. I took the vehicle to the dealership for diagnostic testing, but no fault codes were detected, and no warning lights were illuminated. To demonstrate the issue, I had to conduct a test drive with the mechanic. Following this, the mechanic escalated the issue to the quality engineering team at Volkswagen. My safety and the safety of others are put at risk because the overhead console swings while I am driving, which is a major distraction. I have to use one hand to keep the overhead console where it's supposed to be so I'm driving with one hand. Additionally, it blocks my view to my right mirror, impeding me from doing lane changes. Yes, it's been confirmed in writing from my local dealer and they are well aware of this problem because it's occurring all over the US with 2020 VW Tiguan cars. No, there were no warnings--it happened suddenly and by itself. The overhead console is made of cheap plastic and likely started dangling due to the summer heat waves which weakened the console. I currently reside in Texas where it get HOT during the summer months. I recently got this car back in May. Recently when it’s hot outside my car had cut off one day in traffic and said please check starter system. All electrical components of the car shut off completely. The engine will start run. But the AC, lights, back up camera, windows stop working. I have an appt to drop the car off at the dealership. I been seeing this is an ongoing problem for. VW vehicles I have seen multiple stories about this happening mainly in 2019-2020 jettas. This needs to be an investigation on VW and this problem.

I came out of the Walmart and got into my car and the Overhead Console was Detached hanging by electrical cords in front of the rear view mirror. Drove to the Antwerpen delership before they closed and was informed it detached due to HEAT????? Seriously, heat! Have an appointment on 08/07/2024. It appears this is happening alot around the US. The overhead console fell down and was hanging by the cables connected to it which control the sunroof motor, SOS system, Info button, rear interior lights and driver/passenger dome lights. It hangs between driver and passenger at roughly 4 inches from the roof and obscures peripheral vision and usage of the rear-view mirror. Finally, if it occurred while driving it could easily have caused an accident.

The interior overhead panel fell down when the car was parked in the garage. There have already been a lot of owners complaining the same issue on VW's forum: [XXX] There was no any incident that may cause this prior to this. It looks to be the bolts attaching the console were over-torqued. If this happened during the drive, it posted hazard to the driver because there will be a hanging panel blocking the driver's vision. My 2020 Tiguan was purchased used about 10 months ago. We moved from RI to CA and the overhead console has completely fallen down and is hanging by the wiring harnesses. I have contacted the dealer and corporate. They do not want to make the repair because it is out of warranty. Upon further investigation It appears that this is a common issue effecting many other 2020-2023 VW Tiguans. This is a safety concern as it obstructs my view from the rearview mirror as well as my line of sight out the windshield. I have a newborn child and bought this car because of the reliability and safety features. A separate issue, but there was a class action lawsuit pertaining to the EBS (Emergency breaking system) not functioning properly. This has not been the best experience and I thought VW would stand behind their product, sadly this has not been the case.

I am writing to report a serious safety concern regarding my Volkswagen Tiguan 2020. The dome light in my vehicle has completely broken off, melting the plastic from the screws, and was hanging by the electrical wires. This issue poses multiple safety hazards: 1.Injury Risk: While driving, the dome light unlatched and fell and struck me on the side of my head, causing a distraction and injury. 2.Visibility Obstruction: When the dome light is hanging, it completely blocks the view through the windshield and rearview mirror, significantly increasing the risk of an accident. I have taken my vehicle to the dealership, and they confirmed that this is a common problem with this model. They have seen and replaced the dome light on many other vehicles of the same model. Despite this being a known issue, there were no warning lights or indicators to alert me to the impending failure. This indicates that the parts used are faulty and pose a significant safety risk. I urge the NHTSA to investigate this issue promptly and consider issuing a safety recall for Volkswagen Tiguan 2020 vehicles to prevent potential accidents and injuries. Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2022 Tiguan and 2018-2021 Tiguan long wheel base (LWB) vehicles. Due to incorrect installation instructions, the accessory rear hatch spoiler may be insufficiently attached to the vehicle.

Risk: An insufficiently attached spoiler may separate from the vehicle, becoming a road hazard and increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will replace the spoiler, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 3, 2022. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 66N5.

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen ) is recalling certain 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport, Jetta, Jetta GLI and Tiguan and Audi Q5 and SQ5 and 2021 Volkswagen Atlas vehicles. Parts of the front seat frame and backrest adjuster may not have been welded properly.

Risk: In the event of a rear-end crash, the backrest adjustment could break, possibly reducing the amount of occupant restraint, thus increasing risk of injury.

Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the front seats, and, as necessary, replace the seatback frames, free of charge. The recall began September 11, 2020.
