We purchased a 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe from a dealership in Wisconsin in 2022. In 2023, the vehicle’s transmission failed completely at only 128,000 miles. After researching the issue, I discovered that the 6L80E transmission installed in this model year has a long history of mechanical failures, particularly involving the torque converter and internal clutch packs. Numerous consumer complaints report identical failures, and GM has issued multiple service bulletins acknowledging related issues but has not initiated a recall. The repair shop diagnosed the problem as a failed torque converter and damaged internal clutch packs. There were no warning signs, one day the transmission functioned normally, and the next day it failed completely. This failure caused significant financial hardship. I paid over $5,000 for a full transmission rebuild using my credit card, resulting in ongoing interest charges and credit impact. I had to perform balance transfers to manage the debt and ease the financial burden. Given the widespread nature of this issue and GM’s acknowledgment of mechanical defects in the 6L80E transmission, I am requesting that GM reimburse repair costs and that regulators investigate the 6L80E’s reliability and safety to determine whether a recall or class action remedy is warranted.

I wanted to express a concern regarding my vehicle. There are several wires exposed on my dashboard where multiple cracks have developed over time. I have been hesitant to bring the vehicle in for the airbag recall replacement because I am concerned that the existing damage to the dashboard could worsen during the repair process. My primary worry is that additional cracking could expose more wiring to heat, which may increase the risk of electrical issues, wire corrosion, or even a potential fire hazard. I would appreciate any guidance on how this situation could be addressed safely while completing the necessary recall work. Thank you for your time and assistance. I look forward to your advice on the best next steps.

But I must sign a waver if the dash crackes in the process they are not responsible for damages and I will have to pay for dash if I want it fixed. Why would I be responsible if this is a recall.I contacted Chevrolet and was informed its a case by case thing and they will not guarantee dash being fixed. Why would I want to chance this.

To Whom It May Concern, I have a 2010 Tahoe LTZ which has a cracked dashboard. I have called around to get this fixed and this is very expensive at the dealership for over $1500. I had checked around and found out that this is a common issue with certain types of GM vehicles and mine is on the list. I will like for this to be replaced by GM because because this is truly a safety issue because the cracks are on the driver side near the airbags. The vehicle randomly loses or gains power while driving. All of the auto locks go up and down, while the cluster goes in and out with very high rpms and then completely loses power in the middle of the road. Or this happens and the steering gets very tough. It is very dangerous because there are times where it happens on the highway while doing up to 80mph. It also happens when sitting at line to pick up my child in pre-k. If it were to jump and the brakes weren’t hit fast enough it could really cause a horrible and possibly deadly situation. I have done everything that I can on my end with this truck. I recently replaced the battery and replaced the master fuse since reading it was the cause. That lasted for a week. I have read hundreds of owners with the same problems that have went to private owned mechanic shops along with gm certified mechanic shops. They have yet to find an answer to this possibly deadly malfunction. There are posts and websites all over sharing other owners with the same problems and all of their stories end the same. That gm along with any mechanic used has yet to find any results to this. I noticed that the 2015 model has a recall for this problem but doesn’t describe what is being done to fix the actual problem. It has the same engine and setup as far as I can see so I wonder why there isn’t a recall for the 2010. I have two school age children that have to be brought to and picked up from school daily. If you look up this problem online you will find endless stories and questions about the issue at hand. Most people end up spending thousands of dollars trying to fix the problem on new batteries, cables, starters, etc. However, they all end up with the problem being unresolved with all of that unnecessary debt. This is a very serious manner and I feel that it’s only a matter of time before lives are lost over this. I thank you for the opportunity to be heard and pray that a resolution comes sooner than later.

I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE USED IN THE FALL OF 2019 AT A USED CAR DEALERS LOT IN OREGON. IN THE SUMMER OF 2019 WE STARTED EXPERIENCING RANDOM NO START PROBLEMS. THE FIRST INCIDENCE WE THOUGHT IT WAS A FAULTY STARTER EVEN THOUGH WE COULD JUMP/SHORT IT ACROSS THE TERMINAL, AND START THE VEHICLE. AFTER REPLACING THE VEHICLES STARTER WITH A REMANUFACTURED NON GM STARTER, WE STARTED HAVING MORE NO START PROBLEMS. REMEDY WAS ARCING THE STARTER POSTS ACROSS ONE ANOTHER, AND THEN VEHICLE WOULD CRANK AND START. WE HAD THE VEHICLE INSPECTED BY A GM DEALER, OUR LOCAL MECHANIC, AND THEY STATED IT HAD TO BE "DEAD" IN ORDER TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. THEN A WEEK LATER WE HAD THE CAR GO INTO "ANTI-THEFT MODE" WHILE DRIVING, AND THE SPEED AND TRANSMISSION SLOWED THE VEHICLE NEARLY TO A STOP ,- ALL THE LIGHTS STARTED BLINKING, DIC WARNING LIGHTS STARTED FLASHING CHECK STABILITY, CHECK BLIND SIDE, CHECK 4 WHEEL DR., ECT... FORTUNATELY I WAS NOT FAR FROM HOME AND PARKED THE CAR IN THE DRIVEWAY AND SHUT IT OFF. IMMEDIATELY I TRIED TO RE-START THE VEHICLE AND WE HAD A "NO-CRANK" ISSUE AGAIN. I CHECKED AND REPLACED ALL FUSES RELATING TO THE STATER EVEN THOUGH NOT BLOWN. WE THEN HAD IT TOWED TO OUR LOCAL MECHANIC WHO IS ASE CERTIFIED AND HE COMPLETELY DISMANTLED THE UNDER HOOD ELECTRONIC FUSE BLOCK, AND THE COMMUNICATION FUSE BLOCK UNDER THE DRIVERS SIDE DASH AND TO NO AVAIL- FOUND NO WIRING OR FUSE PROBLEMS. HE DIAGNOSED OVER 400 CONNECTIONS, AND COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING CONTRIBUTING TO THE PROBLEMS. HE STATED AS SOON AS HE UNBOLTED THE UNDER HOOD FUSE BLOCK THE CAR STARTED, BUT HE CONTINUED THE DIAGNOSTICS AS STATED ABOVE. THERE IS A THIRD FUSE BLOCK UNDER THE DASH THAT SITS BESIDE THE COMMUNICATION BLOCK, AND HAS FUSES THAT WERE CHECKED AS WELL. DURING JULY, AUGUST, OCTOBER 2019, WE HAD NUMEROUS NO START/CRANK INSTANCES. REMEDY IS A LARGE SCREWDRIVER AND ARCING THE STARTER.

I PURCHASED MY 2010 IN 2011 AND THE DASH CRACKED IN 2012. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO MY LOCAL CHEVY DEALER TWICE AND CHEVY WILL STILL NOT ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR ITS POOR QUALITY AND MANUFACTURING. A VEHICLE THAT IS ONLY TWO YEARS OLD AND HAD NEVER BEEN INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT SHOULD NOT HAVE COSMETIC DAMAGE. THIS IS DEFINITELY A MANUFACTURERS PROBLEM AND SHOULD BE REPLACED BY THE COMPANY. MY TRUCK WAS WORTH 48,000 AT THE TIME AND I SHOULD NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR A REPAIR CAUSED BY POOR QUALITY OF THEIR MATERIALS. NOW MY VEHICLE IS 9 YEARS OLD AND THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED OUT OF NOWHERE WHEN MY SON WAS DRIVING.... THERE WAS NO WRECK OR IMPACT WITH ANYTHING AND THEY DEPLOYED. THE QUALITY USED BY CHEVY IS TERRIBLE AND I DO NOT PLAN ON PURCHASING ANYTHING ELSE FROM A COMPANY THAT SELLS OVER PRICED VEHICLES WITH CHEAP AND FAULTY PARTS THAT THEY DON'T WANT TO ASSUME RESPONSIBILITY FOR.

Investigations
2 NHTSA investigations on record
Investigations are agency reviews, not findings that a vehicle is defective.
From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 Blomquist Report at www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/documents/expert_report-hrblomquist.pdf.Consequently, all frontal inflators using propellant 2004 that do not contain a "desiccant" (a substance that traps and holds moisture) in US vehicles are under recall. These "non-desiccated" inflators either have been or are required to be replaced. In some cases, the remedy part for these recalled inflators was, or will be, an inflator using either propellant 2004 or 2004L that does contain a desiccant. None of these "desiccated" remedy parts (which were installed in older model year vehicles) are currently under recall for a degradation concern. Certain subsets of desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004 for use as original equipment, however, have been recalled for a degradation concern. All Takata inflators produced with propellant 2004L contain desiccant, and none of these desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L are under recall for a degradation concern. There have been no reported field ruptures in any non-recalled desiccated PSAN inflators. It is understood that desiccants fully saturate at some threshold, at which point any additional moisture will not be captured. This means the degradation process observed in non-desiccated inflators using propellant 2004 may also occur in non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004, assuming additional moisture enters the inflator and high temperature cycling occurs. Based on available information, desiccant saturation can occur within the first five years in the worst environments, and the time required for full saturation is affected by multiple factors. While no present safety risk has been identified, further work is needed to evaluate the future risk of non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004.Three entities -- Takata (now known as TK Global), the Independent Testing Coalition, and Exponent -- have been studying the long-term behavior of Takata desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004L (as well as 2004) in the presence of moisture and temperature cycling. The research efforts, which include development of predictive modeling techniques and field sample analysis, are ongoing. To date, none of the researchers have identified field evidence showing that propellant 2004L is undergoing a degradation process that leads to aggressive deployment and potential rupture. However, the time in service of such inflators remains short compared to that of the inflators using propellant 2004. Further study is needed to assess the long-term safety of desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L.The Office of Defects Investigation is opening this investigation to examine whether a safety defect related to propellant degradation exists in non-recalled desiccated PSAN frontal inflators manufactured by Takata. This investigation will require extensive information on Takata production processes and surveys of inflators in the field. Lists of recall actions that may have used desiccated PSAN inflators as remedy parts, as well as the makes and models originally manufactured with them, is available with the downloadable version of this document (see nhtsa.gov/recalls?nhtsaId=EA21002 -- note this information is subject to change/revision as the investigation proceeds). This investigation does not supersede EA15-001, which remains open.
In June 2015, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this Defect Petition in response to a petition (see ODI 10568388) requesting a defect investigation of several alleged defects that can cause occupant ejections during rollover crashes in certain General Motors vehicles. The petition focused on a 2011 Texas crash involving a model year 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe, which allegedly resulted in multiple occupants to be ejected. One of the ejected occupants was fatally injured. In assessing the petitioner's request, ODI reviewed information from the petitioner, technical information related to rollover side curtain air bags from General Motors (note: ODI did not request GM's field incident data), NHTSA's prior testing and evaluation work related to FMVSS No. 226 Ejection Mitigation, and potentially relevant reports in the NHTSA complaint and crash databases.Based on the information available at the present time, NHTSA does not believe that a safety-related defect currently exists in the design of the rollover side curtain air bags in the model year 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe and other similarly designed Tahoe and Yukon vehicles. Therefore, the petition is denied. However, the agency will take further action if warranted by changing future circumstances. The official petition denial, as published in the Federal Register, is available in the document file for this petition.
