Vehicle steering or at least power steering failed catastrophically. Started with some electronic sounds at extremes of turning radius but subsequently failed completely and rendered car undriveable. Hyundai repair center attributed this to "excessive dirt and dust" or some external force, but was unable to substantiate or demonstrate any damage to parts they say need replacing. Ultimately this remains undiagnosed with regards to cause but dealer clearly identifies need to replace P/S motor and rack and pinion assembly. Insurance inspection documents no sign of external involvement in the failure. No warning lights/messages. Problem is repeatable. While failure would have been a safety risk at higher speed, it went from "noise at edge of turning radius" to "cannot steer the car" at a point in time where the car was moving at low speeds.

On 5/27/26, when the car was parked in parking lot, received an alert on dashboard, "check electric vehicle system", when the car was turned on. The car would not shift in to drive or reverse so had to get towed to nearby Hyundai dealership. The EV system was recalibrated and test driven 122 miles to verify proper operation. Then on 6/23/26, when driving on road received an alert on dashboard "power limited". The car would not accelerate and had to get it towed again to same dealership. The dealership performed tests on ICCU and 12V battery but came back negative.

During routine driving, the vehicle suddenly displayed an electrical system. Error code followed several minutes later by a 12-volt battery error. The vehicle was stopped and turned off. When turned back on all warnings disappeared and vehicle was returned to service for approximately 3 MI before warnings appeared again. Vehicle was then parked as it entered limp mode with a maximum speed of 11 mph. manufacturers roadside assistance was called and arrived to jumpstart the 12-volt battery which resulted in the vehicle turning on but not charging despite sufficient charge in the high voltage battery. Vehicle was stranded in a secure parking lot after hours with Windows unable to be closed and doors unable to lock. The vehicle is immobilized due to being unable to put the vehicle into neutral to move it to a suitable location for a tow. Vehicle was certified by dealership as a certified pre-owned vehicle approximately 45 days ago. All listed recalls have been checked and no undue stress has been placed on the vehicle since purchase. Vehicle stranded to adults and one toddler in 80 plus degree heat without any ability to remove the car to a safe location or secure transportation to an appropriate business.

This is an EV . We use the regenerative braking to slow down. This car has both a front and rear dash cam. The car is about two and a half years old and has about 20,800 miles. We were approaching a red traffic light with several vehicles stopped in front of us. My partner was driving and had slowed to 8 mph, with her foot off the accelerator, advancing slowly towards the car in front of us when the vehicle experienced unanticipated, rapid acceleration. With quick reflexes, she was able brake hard and avoided a collision. Ten minutes later she was parking at our house, going 4 mph and it did it again, coming within four feet of the building. Neither time was she touching the accelerator, but the car accelerated like the accelerator was pressed to the floor. This is very dangerous.

On June 13, 2026, my 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 experienced a sudden and dangerous propulsion failure while in active motion. The vehicle had approximately 9,447 miles on it and was at 58% battery charge at the time of the incident. The vehicle was leased in January 2025 and has been serviced exclusively at the Hyundai dealership. While driving with two occupants, the vehicle abruptly lost all ability to accelerate. The dashboard displayed a critical warning: “Stop vehicle and check power supply” along with a red battery icon. This failure occurred without warning and immediately placed us in danger of being struck by surrounding traffic, as the vehicle could no longer maintain speed or respond to throttle input. I was able to coast the vehicle off the roadway. Shortly after stopping, the vehicle issued an additional warning stating that auxiliary functions were draining the battery. Within moments, the vehicle shut itself down completely. This left both occupants stranded in extreme heat (over 100°F) with no air conditioning, no ventilation, and no ability to restart or power the vehicle while waiting for rescue. This created a serious risk of heat-related medical distress in addition to the initial roadway hazard. The vehicle’s complete loss of propulsion followed by a full electrical shutdown represents a severe safety defect. At no point should an electric vehicle with more than half a charge and fewer than 10,000 miles lose propulsion during active driving or shut down all systems while occupants are inside. This incident posed a significant risk of collision, injury, or heat-related harm. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this failure mode, as it may indicate a broader defect affecting the propulsion or battery management systems of the Hyundai Ioniq 5. The vehicle is currently at the Hyundai dealership undergoing diagnostics and they confirmed they had difficulty jumping it to move it from where the tow truck had parked it on arrival.

I am writing regarding a very serious and frightening safety incident involving my 2024 Hyundai IONIQ 5. While driving through a busy intersection in California, the vehicle displayed the warning message: “Stop vehicle and check power supply.” Within approximately one minute of that warning appearing, the vehicle completely lost power and became inoperable in the middle of the intersection. The shutdown occurred without warning and created an extremely dangerous situation. The vehicle’s hazard lights would not function because the car appeared to be entirely without power. Traffic continued moving around me while I was stranded in the intersection, and I genuinely feared that another vehicle could collide with me. I ultimately called 911 because the situation was unsafe and I could not move the vehicle. Police responded and directed traffic until the vehicle could be towed. Hyundai dealership had the vehicle for 22 days and diagnosed it as a faulty ICCU (Integrated Charging Control Unit) which they replaced for no charge. This incident has caused me to lose confidence in the safety and reliability of this vehicle. A complete loss of propulsion in active traffic — especially accompanied by failure of the hazard system — is an unacceptable safety risk. I no longer feel safe driving this vehicle. Hyundai of America would not let me cancel the lease early due to safety concerns.

This is the second time the ICCU failed. The car is waiting for a full EV battery replacement. The first time the failure happened on 12/11/25, at 9,165 miles, the alert happened just before the car came to a full stop as we were driving along the road near our house, it was very difficult to steer, we were sort of stopped in the road and had to get it towed. The second time the alert came on 4/16/26 and we were able to get it to the dealer.

TIRE SIZE 235 / 55 R 19. Vehicle is a 2024 IONIQ 5. Issue began at/around 10k miles of use. Sound dampening foam inside of the tires comes loose and bunches up in the tire, creating varying degrees of car shaking and vibration. At its worst, the steering wheel and tires violently shake, especially between 50 - 75 mph. On the highway this causes a very dangerous situation of the driver fighting the wheel to remain safely within their lane. This can happen with no warning (or very little) as the vibration may be subtle at lower speeds on local roads, only to become unexpectedly extreme and violent while speeding-up to join highway traffic. Local Hyundai dealership inspected and tried rotating and balancing which did not fix the problem. Finally they removed the tires and inspected the foam which fixed the issue on one single tire. Cost was passed to the consumer, who is not at fault. And with only one tire addressed, the potential remains for each tire to experience the same failure without warning as time goes by. This is a very dangerous issue, well known as evidenced by complaints since 2023 online, and is going to cause accidents. It is unacceptable that drivers have risk their safety and that of other drivers if they lose control of the car due to the inability to control the steering wheel. Then have to pay to fix this issue or pay for new tires after only 10-12k miles.

The vehicle could no longer be driven, as this problem occurred quickly after subsequent restarts. I had the vehicle towed to the dealership, who confirmed it was a broken ICCU, and stated that this had been happening a lot to the Ioniq5s. The replacement part was on backorder. It ended up taking nearly 60 days for the replacement to arrive and to be installed.

I was driving and the vehicle was operating as expected in normal conditions when I heard a loud pop sound, followed by an alert on my car infotainment to pull over and inspect the 12v battery. "12 volt battery low. Stop safely" I turned the car around to drive back home. The car wouldn't go any faster than 40mph. Once parking the car back home, the car would not turn on anymore. This is congruent with what I've been reading online about other Hyundai Ioniq 5 drivers experiencing when the ICCU in the car fails, requiring Hyundai to fix it.

I lease a 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 AWD. Prior to a planned trip, the vehicle displayed an electrical system warning. I contacted the dealership and was advised to bring it in. While driving approximately 5 miles to the dealership, the vehicle lost all power including hazard lights, leaving me stranded on a busy road. I contacted roadside assistance and the vehicle was towed to the dealership. The dealership confirmed the failure was caused by the ICCU (Integrated Charging Control Unit). The repair took approximately two weeks. The vehicle was unavailable during this time, requiring a rental car. Hyundai partially reimbursed rental costs but did not compensate for other losses incurred. The ICCU failure is a known widespread issue affecting the entire Hyundai/Kia E-GMP platform across multiple models and model years. My on Thursday, April 2, my 2024 Hyunda Ioniq 5 displayed the "Check Electrical System" message displayed. I had just started the car. I started to lose propulsion on a busy street [XXX] ). I managed to get the car to [XXX] and had to pull over. I had the car towed to the Luther Hyundai, [XXX] . On Monday, April 6, the dealer informed me the ICCU failed. The ICCU and a fuse were replaced. I picked up the car April 7. Although Hyundai has supposedly fixed the ICCU problem, it continues to fail, as mine did. There were no dash warnings. The car slowed to 20MPH and then stopped just as we were about to pull onto a busy freeway. The dash stayed on and then went blank while I waited for the tow truck to take it back to the dealer. The tow truck driver was unable to move the car without jumping the dead battery to get the car to pull up the tow truck ramp. We were told it was an ICCU failure. The car was in the Hyundai dealer for replacement of the ICCU unit for approximately 10 days.

ICCU and its fuse blew randomly while reversing out of a parking spot. A warning light appeared on the dashboard saying "check electric vehicle system" after a loud pop noise came from the rear passenger side. The ICCU charges the 12V battery on board, and when the 12V dies the whole car dies, resulting in the car shutting down suddenly. It's a known issue with this model car. The service center confirmed the ICCU blew when they ran diagnostics.

In an electric vehicle this is a very alarming message to see. I was fortunate to be close to home so I was able to drive home and call roadside assistance for my car to be towed to the dealer. I was driving in a parking lot and heard a “pop” sound like a balloon breaking. The Ionic 5 lurched and stopped. A red circle appeared on the dash and said “check electrical system.” I slowly maneuvered the car into a parking spot because there was very little power and turned off the car. I called the Hyundai dealer and they told me to have the car towed to the dealer in Palm Springs, CA. When the tow truck unloaded the Ionic 5 at the dealer, I attempted to move the car into a parking spot so it was out of the traffic lane. I started the car again it again lurched and a yellow circle came up with a turtle icon. Then another red circle appeared “check 12V battery”. The car would not move after that. I went into the Hyundai service department and talked to the service representative. He said he would take the vehicle in for service and I signed the paperwork.

Received multiple "Check Vehicle Electric Systems" on a drive which went away and then got into the car, turned it on, shifted into drive, and heard a pop from bellow before moving at all and the car went into Turtle Mode and blasted warnings. The car completely died with zero power leaving it stranded in sub freezing temperatures and unable to lock the car or open the lift gate to access the trunk area. Eventually it was towed to the dealership and was diagnosed to have a faulty ICCU which took 5 weeks to replace.

The vehicle experienced a sudden failure of the 12V battery while on the road. The car stopped completely and became inoperable. I was stuck on the road for about one hour waiting for a tow truck. During that time, other vehicles were honking and passing by, increasing the risk of an accident. The vehicle had to be jump-started before it could be moved. Details: What component failed: The 12V battery system failed unexpectedly. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Safety risk: Loss of power caused the vehicle to stop on the road with no tail lights, putting my safety and others at serious risk. Reproduction/confirmation: Issue was temporarily resolved with a jump-start, but this is a known issue reported by other owners as well. While driving I received the infamous "Stop vehicle and check power supply" warning, and it was then inoperable, needed a tow to the dealer for ICCU replacement. I can't believe you terminated your initial investigation into this in 2023 because they did a recall (which my car received). That recall did not fix the issue. It is March 2026 and Ioniq 5 and other models with the same electric system are dying on the road at the same rate as before. There is a large percentage of failed cars, and every failure is dangerous. This is a huge safety issue, and is not receiving adequate oversight by the NHTSA.

I was merging onto the highway. I got a warning that I needed to check my electrical system. I was able to back down the highway ramp and park on a side street. Within 20 minutes the car was fully dead and AAA needed to tow it to the dealer. The dealer confirmed that the ICCU needs a replacement. My family is lucky this happened in a place we could safely get to a side street. Had it happened 5 minutes later we would have been stranded on the highway with 2 small children.

According to Hyundai, all active recall campaigns have been addressed on this vehicle (NHTSA site says it wasn't, Hyundai claims it was on 9/22/2025). Last night (3/3/2026) while driving on an unlit, two-lane country road about 20 minutes from my house, I heard and felt a bang noise from underneath the rear cabin of the car accompanied by a message stating "Stop vehicle and check power supply" on the dash. The car immediately went into a limp mode, reducing speed to ~40mph. After about 0.5 miles, the car further reduced speed to about 25mph (in a 55mph zone). As speed reduced further (no indication of what the speed would be reduced to), I pulled the car off of the road and awaited tow service. As this happened in the evening on an unlit country road, I was forced to wait for assistance along a stretch of road that could have been hazardous. Hyundai's claimed recall campaign work was performed on 9/22/25 with subsequent recurring failure about 5 months later. The dealer cannot confirm the diagnosis or offer estimates of repair time/availability until they see the car (currently scheduled for next week).

On January 31st, 2026, not long after starting a journey in my car, I got a “check electrical systems” warning. I was close to home so was able to turn around and drive home. Just before pulling into the driveway, the warning changed to a “power limited” warning. On Monday Feb 2nd, I had the car towed to my local dealership, where it has been since. The dealer confirmed that it was an issue with the ICCU component which is on back order to this day.

Car suddenly out of the blue reported electrical system problem and battery problem. It also entered turtle mode where it would not go more than 10 MPH. If accelerating across an intersection this would have been extremely problematic if expecting to be able to travel faster than that. Towed to dealer that said it is a failed ICCU. This is a common failure mode and there needs to be a fix and safety recall for this.

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2023-2024 Ioniq 5 vehicles. The high voltage battery cells may contain misaligned electrodes, which can lead to a fire while parked or driving.
Risk: A fire increases the risk of injury.
Remedy: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures and limit their charge to a maximum of 80% until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will replace the high voltage battery system assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 31, 2026. Owners may contact Hyundai's customer service at 855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 305. On June 8, 2023, the Office of Defect Investigation (ODI) opened PE23011 to investigate allegations of loss of motor power on model year (MY) 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 vehicles. Some consumers reported loss of motor power immediately after a warning lamp illumination or reduction of motive power while the vehicle was in motion. This investigation found that the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) may be subject to various conditions such as overcurrent, overvoltage induced at the end of charging, and certain thermal loading during operation that can damage its internal components and open the ICCU fuse, resulting in an inability to charge the 12-volt battery. The vehicle could eventually lose all motive power, increasing the risk of a crash. In July 2023, Hyundai issued a service campaign to address certain MY 2022-2023 Ioniq 5 and MY 2023 Ioniq 6 vehicles that may have low 12V auxiliary battery charging occurrences due to an ICCU fault and may set the DTC P1A9096 “DC/DC Converter Input Voltage Sensor Fault”. On March 15, 2024, Hyundai filed Safety Recall 24V-204 for 98,878 MY 2022-2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 vehicles and MY 2023-2024 Hyundai Ioniq 6, Genesis GV60, Genesis GV70 “Electrified” and Genesis G80 “Electrified” vehicles. The recall remedy provides an inspection, and if necessary, a replacement of the ICCU and the associated fuse. The ICCU software reduces the risk of overcurrent and implements voltage peak reduction at the end of EV battery charging. The recall also includes a software update that revises the electric water pump operational threshold to reduce thermal loading during charging and driving. In view of the recall action being taken by Hyundai, ODI is closing this Preliminary Evaluation. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances.
