Electrical Fire.Happened Friday 6/5/26 sometime after I parked for the night. Vehicle was parked for the night. I went out the next day and the key fob nor the key would open the door. To try and see what might be jammed, I went and looked in the passenger side window and saw the damage.

The power steering goes out while driving randomly and has been happening every drive for at least a year and 6 months. It passes car inspections because the situation is restarted when you turn the car off and turn it on. There is no indication when it will go out and it’s not correlated with another condition. It seems to be totally random. If I turn the car off and restart it, it works again. It could be for another half mile, 30 miles or 1 mile, then it will go out again. When I take it to a garage and get diagnostic testing it comes up with nothing being wrong because it resets when the car is started. It’s extremely frustrating and dangerous because I’ll be driving and without warning power steering shuts down. I have been reading online that Honda has a recall on its electric power steering system, on my model and year however it doesn’t cover my Vin number. Why is that? I can’t even find, a fix for the problem. Please advise as to what to do.

Last evening the interior vehicle power (headlights, dash lights, AC/heat fan) intermittently flashed off then back on while driving...when this happened as I arrived home, I completely lost power steering (electronic power steering warning light came on) and could barely turn the steering wheel. Thankfully I was moving at relatively slow speed when I lost power steering, but this could certainly be a life hazard at higher speeds.

The rear door window motors both failed. At the time of this report they are available for inspection. The safety risk is that back seat passengers could become trapped in the event of a water entry which makes doors difficult or impossible to open. Because the rear windows are typically operated less than the front, the average user would not expect that they have failed (especially if the fronts are working) and the failure would likely go unnoticed, possibly until the emergency situation occurs. The vehicle has not been checked or inspected by any dealer, service center, manufacturer, police, insurance representative, or any person other than myself. However, I have checked the fuses and verified with a voltmeter that the switches have power and are operating correctly thus isolating the failure to the motors. There is no warning lamp or message indicating that the window motors are not functional and I did not experience any symptoms other than the window not moving when the switches were depressed. I noticed the left rear failure first in July 2023 and at that time the right rear was still functional. Approximately a month later the right rear failed. I only thought to make this report because when I searched the internet for troubleshooting and replacement parts I found quite a few other accounts of a variety of Honda models with rear window failure many of them were both, and several auto mechanics indicated that this issue was common. Unless the rear doors use different motors than the front doors, it is possible that the root cause is a wiring/electrical problem and electrical problems have a reputation of eventually causing other seemingly unrelated problems elsewhere in the system.

I had my airbags serviced in 2016 at a Honda dealership to fix the Takata airbag recall issue. In 2023, I was hit on the front left portion of the car at an estimated 50mph, and no airbags deployed. I contacted Honda about this issue, and they said my insurance company had to do an inspection relating to the airbag failure reasons, but my insurance company said Honda would have had to send an agent to inspect. My car was totaled and sold by the insurance company. I have the official pictures from the insurance company’s inspection to value the car.

The contact owns a 2013 Honda Fit. The contact stated while driving 10 MPH, the vehicle stalled with a grinding sound coming from the vehicle. Upon restarting the vehicle, the failure persisted with the ABS warning light illuminated. Additionally, the vehicle started rolling forward while in park(P) and the parking brake was activated to stop the vehicle from rolling. Due to the failure, the vehicle was towed to the residence. An independent mechanic arrived at the residence and replaced the driver’s side CV axle. Upon taking the vehicle to a dealer for an oil change; the contact was informed that the vehicle was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V770000 (Power Train); however, the recall was closed three years prior. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in the recall. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.

While my wife was coming to a stop in a parking space, the car suddenly accelerated and jumped over the curb into a pedestrian walkway. The car could not be stopped with the brake and continued moving over the walkway. Afraid that the car would hit a pedestrian or crash into cars on the busy street ahead, she was ready to stop the car by crashing it into a concrete column. Fortunately, she removed the key and the car stopped. A similar incident occurred in 2014 when the car suddenly accelerated while I was coming to a stop at a traffic light. In order to avoid hitting the car in front of me, I stopped by removing the key. Then I drove the car to the dealer. A master mechanic checked the car but could not duplicate the problem. In 2020, the car again accelerated suddenly while stopping at a traffic light. I stopped the car immediately but did not report the incident. After the third incident, we contacted the dealer and stated that we did not want to drive the car ever again because we did not want to risk injuring ourselves or others. We had the car towed to the dealer to be checked. The dealer could not duplicate the problem and they demonstrated safety features of the car that prevent the accelerator from overpowering the brake. We were not convinced since we use the same foot to operate the accelerator and the brake. Therefore, when the foot is on the brake, nothing is pushing the accelerator. The engine was accelerating by itself, possibly by the engine control software. We then initiated a case with American Honda. We were later informed by an American Honda case manager that their Field Technical Specialist had determined that “the vehicle is functioning according to Honda’s specifications” and that Honda was not going to investigate further. The local dealer agreed to buy the car at market price.

ECU detected a cylinder #2 misfire, check engine light started blinking while idling. prior, noticed a little bit of misfiring while driving at 60 mph, faint but noticeable. well aware of the plaqued inner cylinder's spark plugs coming loose on these make and models and honda's failed torque spec being changed from for the spark plug being in the cylinder. know this because of forums online. the plugs were torque spec to 20 ft-lbs. checked the #2 cylinder and spark plug was loose/out of the threads. also top piece of spark plug broke off and fell into cylinder. threads completely taken off the cylinder. having a honda dealer taking a look to assess damage. car mileage is 109,500. completely unacceptable and don't really feel confident in driving this vehicle safely anymore. car still has a lot of life left in it. 109,500 miles is still considered low for mainly highway miles. also VSA light came on same time the check engine light started blinking. someone could get hurt and lose control of the vehicle if this not dealt with. car stalled after a bit and lost power, can't imagine what it would be like on the highway. please honda, do a recall on this so other people don't get hurt. plus, i'm sure i'm not the only one who has this issue.

HONDA SENT ME A NOTICE OF THE FOLLOWING RECALL 20V-770. IT HAS BEEN TWO MONTHS AND THERE IS NO RESOLUTION TO THE ISSUE. THE DRIVE SHAFTS ON MY CAR COULD FAIL. I CALLED HONDA AND THEY BASICALLY SAID THERE'S NOTHING THEY CAN DO AT THIS TIME, THAT I COULD TAKE IT TO A DEALER TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT, BUT IF SOMETHING WAS WRONG THEY COULDN'T FIX MY CAR. WHEN I ASKED ABOUT A RENTAL CAR IF THAT IS THE CASE, THEY SAID THAT THAT WASN'T IN THEIR POWER TO DO AT THIS TIME. I KNOW THAT THEY CAN DO THAT BECAUSE I ALSO WENT THROUGH THE AIR BAG RECALL AND WAS WITHOUT MY CAR FOR MONTHS WHILE THOSE PARTS CAME IT. AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED, HONDA IS BEING NEGLIGENT BECAUSE THEY KNOW SOMETHING IS WRONG, THAT IT IS DANGEROUS, YET ALL THE CARS ARE STILL ON THE ROAD. WHAT IF I CRASH BECAUSE OF THIS? WHAT IF I ACCIDENTALLY KILL SOMEONE OR DAMAGE SOMEONE'S PROPERTY?THIS IS GROSS NEGLIGENCE ON HONDA'S PART. I WANT A SOLUTION NOW.

THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO THE SAME SPARK PLUG LAST WEEK (MARCH 7, 2021). AGAIN, THIS OCCURRED ON A TWO-LANE ROADWAY AT MODERATE SPEED. THE CAR RAN ROUGH FOR A WEEK OR SO BEFOREHAND, AND FUEL ECONOMY SUFFERED. ON MARCH 7TH, THE CAR LOST POWER AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. A FOUL SMELL FILLED THE CAR. I RECEIVED A LETTER IN THE MAIL TODAY (2/8/21) THAT SAYS THERE IS A RECALL ON MY HONDA FIT FOR THE DRIVE SHAFT IN SALT-BELT STATES. THE MANUFACTURER DOES NOT HAVE THE PARTS TO FIX THE PROBLEM YET - BUT SAID IN THE RECALL THAT THEY WOULD UPDATE THE RECALL BY 1/15/21. I HAVE NOT HEARD ANYTHING FROM HONDA. THEY HAVE NOT EVEN OFFERED TO INSPECT MY VEHICLE - WHICH IS CRAZY BECAUSE IF THE DRIVE SHAFT BREAKS I COULD CRASH AND BE KILLED. HONDA SHOULD OFFER ALL VEHICLE OWNERS A RENTAL CAR WHILE THEY ARE "PREPARING REPLACEMENT PARTS" SO WE ARE NOT DRIVING ON THE ROADS WITH A CAR THAT COULD KILL US OR OTHER PEOPLE. OR THEY SHOULD AT LEAST BE REQUIRED TO INSPECT THE VEHICLES DRAFT SHAFTS TO SEE IF THE CORROSION HAS TAKEN PLACE.

WHILE MY SON WAS DRIVING THE CAR IN PORTLAND, OREGON, AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THE ENGINE CUT OUT MAKING CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE VERY DIFFICULT. THE CAR WAS RETURNED TO THE HONDA DEALER WHERE THE PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED AS (MECHANICS REPORT) "COMPRESSION GASKETS ON PLUG 1 & 2 ARE STUCK ON THE TOP THREADS, ALLOWING THE PLUGS TO BE TIGHTENED BUT COMPRESSION IS PASSING BY THE WASHER AND INTO THE SPARK PLUG TUBE." "COILS ONE AND TWO HAD HEAT DAMAGE AND CARBON TRACKING." FOUR SPARK PLUGS REPLACED ALONG WITH COILS FOR PLUGS 1 & 2. THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE AND "WAS IN LIMP MODE " WHEN DRIVEN BACK TO THE HONDA DEALER. SPARK PLUGS ARE RARELY CHANGED THESE DAYS - APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN A FACTORY DEFECT. I'VE READ SIMILAR REPORTS LIKE THIS ON THE NHTSA WEB PAGE UNDER 2013 HONDA FIT ENGINE ISSUES. MECHANIC WAS CONTRACTED TO INSPECT AND REPLACE THE PLUGS AND DID NOT NEED A WRENCH TO REMOVE SPARK PLUG 2, IT WAS COVERED IN CARBON. REPLACING AND RE-TORQUING THE SPARK PLUGS CORRECTED THE ISSUE. IF I WAS NOT PROACTIVE AND FOUND THIS SEEMINGLY COMMON PROBLEM IN THE FORUMS IT COULD HAVE LED TO A BLOWN OUT PLUG STRIPPING THE ENGINE HEAD AND CAUSED A STALL OUT CONDITION. IT WAS RAINING. I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY, CRUISE CONTROL SET AT 65 MPH. AT THIS POINT, THE ROAD CURVES TO THE RIGHT. I HAD JUST GONE THROUGH A DIP IN THE ROAD AND I THINK I MAY HAVE BEEN HYDROPLANING. THE VSA LIGHT CAME ON AND THE RIDE BECAME VERY CHOPPY. I STARTED PUMPING THE BRAKES AND I TRIED TO STEER MY CAR TO STAY IN THE LANE BUT THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP AND I COULDN'T MOVE IT. I CONTINUED ON A STRAIGHT PATH EVEN THOUGH THE ROAD CURVED. I WAS ON THE LEFT HAND SHOULDER, HEADING OFF THE ROAD COMPLETELY, STILL TRYING TO STEER TO THE RIGHT WHEN THE VSA LIGHT ABRUPTLY TURNED OFF. AT THIS POINT THE STEERING WHEEL SUDDENLY UNLOCKED AND I INADVERTENTLY PULLED IT HARD TO THE RIGHT; SENDING ME ACROSS 2 LANES OF TRAFFIC, ACROSS THE RIGHT HAND SHOULDER, OVER A SMALL CURB AND INTO THE DIRT/DESERT. AS THIS WAS HAPPENING, I WAS ABLE TO CORRECT MY STEERING BACK TO THE LEFT BUT NOT BEFORE I WAS COMPLETELY OFF THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THE ROAD AND HIT A SMALL HILL NEXT TO IT WITH THE RIGHT SIDE OF MY CAR. AT THIS POINT, I MANAGED TO GET MY VEHICLE BACK ON THE RIGHT SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. I TOOK MY CAR TO THE HONDA DEALER TO HAVE IT CHECKED. THEY SAID MY TIRES WERE BALD WHICH CAUSED ME TO HYDROPLANE. REGARDLESS OF THE CONDITION OF THE TIRES, WHEN THE VSA IS ENGAGED, I SHOULD STILL BE ABLE TO STEER THE CAR BUT I COULDN'T. THE TECHNICIAN RAN THE DIAGNOSTIC TEST(S) AND SAID HE FOUND NOTHING WRONG. SOMETHING IS DEFINITELY WRONG WHEN YOUR STEERING WHEEL LOCKS UP AT CLOSE TO 65 MPH WHEN A SAFETY FEATURE IS ENGAGED.

WHILE DRIVING THE RADIO, DASH LIGHTS, HEAD LIGHTS, AND POWER STEERING CUTS OUT FOR A MOMENT THEN COMES BACK ON. THIS STARTED OCCASIONALLY 3 MONTHS AGO WITH JUST THE RADIO AND DASH LIGHTS AND HAS PROGRESSED TO SEVERAL TIMES IN A ROW AND NOW INCLUDES THE HEAD LIGHTS AND POWER STEERING. THERE IS NO PREDICTABILITY TO WHEN OR HOW MANY TIMES IT WILL HAPPEN. ONCE IT HAPPENED WHEN I WAS COMING OFF THE HIGHWAY GOING AROUND THE RAMP AT A GOOD SPEED, THE ELECTRICAL WENT OUT I LOST POWER STEERING AND ALMOST HIT THE GUARD RAIL IT CAME BACK ON JUST IN TIME FOR ME TO REGAIN CONTROL. TOOK IT TO HONDA DEALER WITH MY COMPLAINTS; THEY DID A MULTI POINT INSPECTION AND CHECKED FAULTS-NO FAULTS STORED. ALSO CHECKED WIRING AND CONNECTORS-ALL OK. TOLD ME IT WAS PROBABLY THE AFTER MARKET STARTER, I SHOULD BE FINE, TO CONTACT THE STARTER PEOPLE AS IT IS MOST LIKELY THEIR PRODUCT ISSUE AND NOT HONDA'S, THEN SENT ME HOME CHARGING ME OVER AN HOUR OF LABOR. A FEW DAYS LATER IT CUT OUT 12 TIMES IN LESS THAN 3 MILE; I HAD TO FIND A GAS STATION TO PULL OVER IN AS I DID NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THE CAR. TURNED IT OFF & LET IT SIT FOR A FEW MINUTES, STARTED IT AGAIN & HAD NO FURTHER ISSUES UNTIL THE FOLLOWING DAY WHEN IT HAPPENED ANOTHER 8 TIMES IN A ROW. CONTACTED THE CAR STARTER COMPANY TOLD THEM WHAT WAS GOING ON; THEY REMOVED THE STARTER. BUT TOLD ME HE LOOKED IT UP ONLINE & DISCOVERED THIS HAS HAPPENED TO OTHER HONDA FITS & IS MOST LIKELY RELATED TO A FAULTY ALTERNATOR. ANOTHER ISSUE RELATED WITH THIS ALTERNATOR PROBLEM IS DEAD BATTERIES WHICH HAS HAPPENED TO ME AS WELL & AM ON MY 3RD BATTERY WITH IN 6 YEARS! THE CAR STARTER GUY SAID HE WAS CONCERNED WITH MY SAFETY & TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT BY MY MECHANIC AND HAVE THEM LOOK AT THE ALTERNATOR. WELL 2 DAYS LATER THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON & IS IN THE GARAGE TODAY; NOT THE HONDA DEALERSHIP

DUE TO A FRIEND HAVING AN ISSUE WITH THEIR SAME YEAR/MODEL CAR, MY MOM BEING OVERLY CAUTIOUS, THANKFULLY BROUGHT HERS IN TO BE CHECKED. THEY FOUND THE CAR HAD PREMATURE LOOSE PLUGS AND DAMAGED COILS. REQUIRED REPLACEMENT OF 4 PLUGS AND 2 COILS. THIS HAPPENED AT ONLY 48,077 MILES. IF SHE HAD NOT BROUGHT IT IN WHEN SHE DID, THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A SERIOUS AND DANGEROUS PROBLEM LIKE HER FRIEND WHO WAS ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN THEIR ENGINE WENT DUE TO THE SAME ISSUE WITH LOOSE PLUGS. APPARENTLY THIS APPEARS TO BE A FACTORY DEFECT IN THIS MODEL. THEY CHARGED HER $105 AND COVERED THE REST UNDER A "GOODWILL" WARRANTY BECAUSE SHE REFUSED TO PAY FOR THE DAMAGE.

SOY COATING IS A RODENT GOURMET BUFFET!! FIRST ISSUE WAS JUNE OF 2015, RODENTS HAD CHEWED THROUGH THE FUEL PUMP AND GASOLINE WAS LEAKING OUT. MY 80 YEAR OLD MOTHER SMELLED GASOLINE WHEN HER CAR WAS PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY. THERE WAS A LARGE NEST FOUND AS WELL WHEN HONDA INSPECTED THE CAR. A FEW MONTHS LATER, OCTOBER 2015, NEST AND MICE DROPPINGS WERE FOUND IN POLLEN FILTER/GLOVE BOX AREA. SHE BROUGHT IT BACK AND UPON THE DEALER RECOMMENDATION, HONDA WRAPPED ALL OF THE FUEL/VAPOR/ELECTICAL WIRES IN RODENT TAPE (WHICH THEY HAPPILY SUPPLY). THIS IS WHEN SHE WAS TOLD BY CUSTOMER SUPPORT THAT IT WAS A COMMON COMPLAINT/ISSUE DUE TO THE SOY AND WE STARTED RESEARCHING AND FOUND OUT ABOUT THE SOY COATING AND INDUSTRY WIDE PROBLEMS. TOTAL COST TO MY MOTHER $1373.00 FOR THE FUEL PUMP REPAIRS AND RODENT TAPING. THE COMPANY TOLD HER TO USE "WOLF URINE" ON THE GROUND AROUND HER CAR!! THAT WAS THEIR RECOMMENDATION...WOLF URINE. THEY TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY. SHE NOW DRIVES AROUND WITH MOUSE TRAPS ON THE FLOOR BOARDS, PEPPERMINT OIL SOAKED COTTON BALLS IN EVERY CORNER SHE CAN STICK THEM, HOT PEPPER WAX SPRAYED ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE CAR, AND STILL WE GET MICE IN THE TRAPS. WE HAVE LIVED IN THE COUNTRY ALL OF OUR LIVES AND MY MOTHER IS NOW 82 YEARS OLD. NEVER HAVE WE HAD THIS HAPPEN TO ANY VEHICLE INCLUDING HER RV/CAMPERS WHICH SAT UNUSED FOR 6 MONTHS AT A TIME FOR DECADES. NEVER. THEY DENY IT'S THE SOY. WE KNOW IT'S THE SOY!! WE WOULD LIKE A PUBLIC LISTING OF ALL VEHICLES/YEARS/MODELS THAT ARE NOW USING THIS SOY PRODUCTS. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND THIS INFORMATION IN ONE PLACE.

I LOANED MY CAR TO A RELATIVE FOR THREE DAYS AND WHEN IT WAS RETURNED I DETECTED A FUEL SMELL IN CABIN WHEN OUTSIDE AIR WAS SELECTED. ON THE HEATED. I AM A RETIRED AIRCRAFT MECHANIC AND KNOW MY WAY AROUND ENGINES. I DID AN INTERNET SEARCH AND FOUND A HONDA TECH LINE SUMMARY ARTICLE ATS 160714 VERSION 2 ( LOOSE AND BLOWN OUT SPARK PLUGS DUE TO FAILED FACTORY TORQUE). NUMBER TWO PLUG HAD A VIBRATION AND WAS LOOSE, CAUSING THE FUEL BLOW BY. THE SPARK PLUG COULD NOT HAVE BLOWN OUT DUE TO THE COIL HOLDING IT IN PLACE AND ENGINE PERFORMANCE WAS FINE WITH NO CODES.THE CAR HAS 38,000 MILES. THIS UNDETECTED FAILURE WOULD CAUSE THE PASSENGERS TO BREATH GAS FUMES FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. THE DEALER CLAIMS NO KNOWLEDGE OF THIS TECH SUMMARY. Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2013-2015 Acura ILX, 2013 Acura ILX Hybrid, 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid, and 2007-2008 Honda Fit vehicles with a manual transmission and 2009-2013 Honda Fit vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. The drive shafts' protective coating may not have been applied properly during manufacturing, making it more susceptible to damage from road salt, or other contaminants, and potentially cause it to break.

Risk: A broken drive shaft may cause a sudden loss of drive power. The vehicle could also roll away if the parking brake has not been applied before the vehicle has been exited. Either condition can increase the risk of a crash or injury.

Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the drive shafts, replacing either the left or right drive shaft, if necessary, free of charge. Owners were notified of the safety risk with an interim letter mailed February 2, 2021. A second letter will be sent once the remedy is available. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are P9M, PAV, BAY, TAX, CA0, and MAZ.

These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment (such as after a vehicle crash necessitating replacement of the original air bags), may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to higher absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.

Risk: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began February 16, 2018. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are B0K and L0J.

The affected vehicles are equipped with a dual-stage driver frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture.

Risk: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Honda is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Honda Fit Sport vehicles manufactured from May 23, 2011, through March 22, 2013, and model year 2012-2013 Honda Fit base vehicles manufactured from June 27, 2011, through April 19, 2013. In April 2013, Honda recalled 43,782 2012-2013 Honda Fit Sport vehicles. In July 2013, Honda informed the agency that it was adding model year 2012-2013 Honda Fit vehicles in base trim to the recall campaign, representing an additional 48,138 vehicles. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 91,920. The electronic stability control system of the affected vehicles may allow excessive yaw rates at high steering angles with certain tires. Thus, these vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Vehicle Motor Safety Standard No. 126, "Electronic Stability Control Systems."

Risk: Excessive yaw rates prevent the proper function of the electronic stability control (ESC) system, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Honda will notify owners and dealers will update the ESC software free of charge. The safety recall began on August 1, 2013. Owners may contact Honda automobile customer service at 1-800-999-1009. Honda's recall campaign number is S99.

American Honda Motor Co., Ltd, (Honda) is recalling certain model year 2013 Honda Fit vehicles manufactured May 24, 2013, through July 5, 2013, and equipped with a manual transmission. The passenger side driveshaft may break while driving due to an improper heat treatment application during manufacturing.

Risk: If the driveshaft fractures and separates while driving, the vehicle would lose power and coast to a stop. If a vehicle with a fractured driveshaft is parked without the parking brake applied, the vehicle could move unexpectedly. Either condition increases the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the passenger side driveshaft and replace it if necessary, free of charge. The recall began on June 23, 2014. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-800-999-1009. Honda's number for this recall is JE4.

Investigations

1 NHTSA investigation on record

Investigations are agency reviews, not findings that a vehicle is defective.

Electrical overstress

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation to determine if the failure of airbags to deploy during severe crashes, in certain vehicles, was the result of a safety related defect.  During the investigation a complex failure was studied that can result in non-deployment of subject vehicle air bags and other restraint system devices in severe crash events. The subject vehicles may be equipped with an airbag control unit (ACU) for the supplemental restraint system (SRS) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) manufactured by ZF-TRW.  The ECU receives signals from crash sensors mounted in the vehicle and deploys the vehicle air bags and seat belt pretensioners in accordance with manufacturer design specifications.  The ECU in the subject vehicles contains a model DS84 application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) which controls the communication of the crash sensor signal, firing commands (i.e., when to deploy the airbag(s) and/or pretensioners), and fault information (e.g., diagnostic trouble codes). In September 2016, FCA announced recall 16V-668 for certain model year (MY) 2010 to 2014 Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep products manufactured with the subject ZF-TRW ACU.  In this recall, FCA discussed an EOS condition that resulted in a failure of the subject DS84 ASIC, which caused air bag non-deployment.  FCA noted that the defect condition had only been observed in vehicles equipped with sensor harnessing routed across the front of the vehicle.  Other FCA vehicles that also used the subject ACU, but were not equipped with cross-car harnessing, had not experienced EOS failures, despite similar time in service. During the course of this investigation, ODI sent two separate Information Request (IR) letters to six vehicle manufactures (including FCA, Hyundai, Honda, Kia, Mitsubishi, and Toyota) and one IR letter to ZF-TRW.  These IR letters resulted in ODI receiving comprehensive data from these manufacturers and suppliers. Studies of this data found that the DS84 ASIC does not have sufficient protection against negative electrical transients or electrical overstress (“EOS”) that can be generated in certain severe crashes.  An electrical transient occurs when the electrical power supplied to a circuit changes momentarily over a short duration of time.   In these severe crash cases, the crash sensors and other powered wiring can be damaged and short circuited so as to create a negative electrical transient of sufficient intensity and duration (that are outside the vehicle manufacturer's specification) to damage the ASIC before the restraint device deployment signal is received by the SRS ECU.  This damaged signal can lead to incomplete or nondeployment of the air bags and/or pretensioners.  Airbag non-deployment and/or lack of pretensioner operation can increase the risk or severity of injury in a crash.A total of 8 fatalities and 14 injuries were associated with known EOS events. The common element in all investigated manufacturers vehicles is the SRS ECU containing a DS84 ASIC manufactured by ZF-TRW.  The risk associated with the ASIC is equally shared among all OEMS involved in the investigation.  The actual real-world risk can be mitigated by other factors which were assessed by ODI during this investigation. The first mitigating factor involves protections built into the ACU design which protect the DS84 ASIC from damage.  There are multiple strategies and levels of protection employed by different OEMs that provide effective EOS mitigation.  The two most common strategies at the ACU level are circuit protection diodes on the remote senor signal lines, and current limiting resistors that protect critical components. The second mitigating factor is found at the vehicle level and involves the location and routing of the wires leading from the crash sensors to the SRS ECU.  If the wires are well protected in a crash and are not routed with other power wires carrying large currents, the risk for an EOS event is significantly reduced or eliminated. These design specific factors combine to produce a spectrum of risk for the vehicles equipped with ACUs using the DS84 ASIC.  Given the many of years of field exposure, it is possible to divide the subject population into two groups; vehicles which have experienced EOS events, and vehicles which have not experienced EOS field events. Four of the six OEMs involved in this investigation have experienced EOS field events on at least one of their models equipped with a DS84 ASIC.  All vehicle models (including the Toyota models identified in the Failure Report Summary of the opening resume for this investigation) with field events have been recalled.  In an abundance of caution, ODI kept this investigation open five years to monitor field performance and did not identify any field events on vehicles not included in existing safety recalls. Given the spectrum of risk identified in this investigation and that all vehicles with a demonstrated unreasonable risk have been recalled, ODI is closing this investigation. ODI is closing this investigation with the following manufacturer safety recalls: 16V-668, 18E-043, 18V-137, 18V-363, and 20V-024.  With the recall actions taken by the subject vehicle and equipment manufacturers, this investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exists on other model or model year vehicles outside of the recall scopes. The agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.
