My 2015 Colorado has begun to periodically lose power steering. I have now several times been driving. I here a warning ding and a warning on the dash, then my power steering is completely gone. Steering becomes very difficult. This is a significant safety issue. Once I am able to safely pull out of traffic, and restart the truck, the power steering returns.

Will be driving and suddenly my EPS light turns on and doesn’t allow me to turn. I have sudden loss of power assist, making the steering wheel incredibly heavy to turn. Once I pull over to safety and fully turn the truck off and back on, I can generally make it to my destination as the sensor temporarily goes off. It appears there have been recalls for this, but my specific VIN was not included in the recall for some reason. Ultimately, this is extremely dangerous as I have a pretty busy route to/from work. This all randomly started happening two days ago. I am working to schedule an appointment with a local mechanic, but hoping to be included in the recall because it sounds exactly like what was happening in the recall.

Intermittent loss of power steering while driving and at start up. Warning indicators flash "Service Power Steering Drive With Care" and "Service Stabilitrak." Most of the time, when you turn off the truck and turn it back on again, the message will clear and all will be fine again. However, a week or two will go by and it happens again. The last time it happened, it would not clear right away. Finally, it did the next day. GM says there was a recall on my truck that was repaired for this problem but I'm seeing a lot of people online still having problems. This is very dangerous because I cannot physically steer the truck when the power steering goes out. I'm very concerned that me or my teenage son who drives it is going to get in a serious accident.

Had safety recall for loss of power steering repair done in November of 2021. First incident: Leaving a grocery store parking lot, loss of power steering made the steering nearly impossible at low speeds. Message on display said to have steering serviced and dinged. Had a tow truck come and take it to the same dealership that did the repair. Low voltage code was reset, power steering was returned. Dealership wanted $2.3k to repair. Second incident: One month later, pulling out of my driveway when the same message displayed and the dash dinged. Had a tow truck take it to a different repair shop, same issue, same resolution. $2.4k repair. I declined both repairs.

During travel on the highway warning lights appeared and the vehicle lost power steering. This posed a significant safety risk at higher rates of speed and curved roads. Driver immediately drove to the nearest dealership to inquire about safety recalls. The dealership stated that no recalls had been issued for this vehicle and they require a fee to assess the vehicle. Dealership said that the steering failure could result in death and that the incident could have been catastrophic and fatal. The dealer again stated that there was no recalls without checking make model or vin. Upon research of the problem there was no specific recall for this vehicle but it is a common issue for this year make and model. If numerous vehicles identical to mine are having the same issue it is reasonable to believe my vehicle should be recalled experiencing the same problems.

Vehicle loses electric power steering intermittently. Power steering components (gear, harness, hose, torque sensor) all replaced in August 2023 due to water damage/corrosion. Loss of power steering returned in May 2025. Brought to dealer and was told that harness needed replacement again due to water damage/corrosion for $1700. Vehicle is only driven on paved roads and is parked on street where no other cars have water damage issues. I suspect there is a poor design for this harness connection. While driving and attempting to make a right hand turn, all of the sudden the power steering went out. There were warnings that stated traction control was out and power steering were out. There were also warning chimes. But these did not happen BEFORE i lost control. I almost hit another vehicle that was at the stop sign on the street I was attempting to turn onto. It jerked the steering wheel out of my hands. Luckily I was going slow enough to stop and not collide with the other vehicle. This has happened on several occasions, but luckily it hasn't been that close to a collision except that time. Once I turn the truck off and start it again, I will have steering control back. I understand that this is a recall issue for my year, make, and model; but apparently not for the month my truck was produced. This is an extremely dangerous problem as it just happens all of the sudden. Losing complete steering control while driving on the highway is extremely scary, as there isn't always a safe place to pull over and turn off the truck. There have been times that luckily I have a passenger in the truck with me to help maneuver the steering wheel because I can't turn it on my own. This problem really should be addressed for all these vehicles manufactured in 2015. Apparently it is an issue. I have read many forums regarding this exact problem.

Truck was extremely difficult to steer and maintain control. Dealership evaluated and said the steering assembly had to be replaced due to a communications error. The warning indicators came on at the same time as the steering failure. SR:9-14338761808 opened with GM, response was negative.

You never know when the will happen as there is no warning. Making a turn at speeds is unsafe. You are driving with the power steering and halfway through the turn it just gets super hard to turn. A smaller person would have a very hard time turning the wheel. It has been happening for some time but recently it happens every day. I see there was a recall but my vin didn't show a recall for this truck but it should.

Temperature heater flap door, causes truck to go from normal temperature to red hot with boiling coolant in reservoir. Have spent thousands and thousands of dollars , on mechanics and parts! Replaced water pump , thermostat, lots of cooling and heater parts and components . No luck and still no good running car , missing work and spending money we don’t have I read online about other trucks my same year and model having a recall on a temperature door. Causing it to overheat and a lot of people have had the same issue as I’m having. I looked up my truck. It doesn’t have it listed on the recall list but I’m sure that it’s the same issue

After dropping my Dad off at his appt. at Truman VA in Columbia I was pulling in the parking garage and the steering became VERY hard to turn..A light came on that said something about servicing the steering or something like that..I got it in a place to park and turned it off..after his appt I ran out and got in the truck and after starting it the steering worked perfect..2 hours later when we got home it felt different when I turned in the driveway and then it started wobbling like the wheels were falling off. I stopped it, turned off the motor, restarted it and it worked fine again..when we ask the Dealership, 30 miles from us is closest one, they said there wasn't any recalls on it so we'd have to bring it in they would check it out and something about $400 or $500 probably to fix it...i see all these other trucks that got recalled why not his? very dangerous..any chance ya'll can do some looking in to this for us? I would really appreciate it He's [XXX] and certainly don't need to be stressing over this truck he can't drive now..he just bought it 3 years ago from a dealer here in town..Salem, MO 65560 Thank you so much [XXX] / Daughter of [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The power steering system on my vehicle malfunctioned. I was turning at speed when all of a sudden the power steering failed without any warning messages. Turning the vehicle was nearly uncontrollable, putting myself, my passengers, and other drivers at risk. This is a known issue with the same make, model and year of my vehicle, however the manufacturer refuses to address the issue with my specific vehicle. This is the same issue that is addressed under 21V213. I have reported this issue before in the past, and called GM about it, however they will not fix the issue.

While driving at highway speeds, our 2015 Chevrolet Colorado suddenly experienced loss of power assisted steering. I was able to steer the vehicle, but there was no power assist. This happened suddenly, with no advance warning lights. At the time of the incident, the driver information center displayed "check power steering". The sudden loss surprised me and although the vehicle was driveable, the steering was very difficult and a large amount of effort was required to park the truck. I am very glad this did not happen while my wife was driving the vehicle. Upon restarting the truck after a key off cycle, the code and the symptom disappeared. We were able to drive the truck home without the failure occurring, only to drive it again the next day and experience the failure a second time. Once again, the symptom disappeared after a key cycle. We researched the issue on line and found a recall N202325410 that described the same issue that we experienced. However, our trucks VIN is not included in the recall. This is disturbing to me, because our truck displayed the exact symptoms described in the recall. I repaired the truck using the GM approved recall repair procedure, which was to replace the steering torque sensor cover. We have safely driven the truck with no further loss of the power assist for 2 weeks. If we had known this could be an issue, we would have addressed it pro-actively. Instead, we experienced a failure on the highway. I am relieved that no accident occurred, but any number of circumstances could have occurred that lead to an accident when you suddenly loose your power assist on steering. The vehicle is available for inspection, and I have saved the torque sensor cover that I removed. My local dealer confirmed the failure and provided information on the recall. My vehicle has not been inspected by GM, the police, insurance representatives, or others besides my GM dealer and myself. Warning lamps as described above.

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2015 Chevrolet Colorado vehicles manufactured September 15, 2014, to January 21, 2015, and 2015 GMC Canyon vehicles manufactured October 3, 2014, to December 9, 2014. The affected vehicles have a front driver air bag inflator that may be misaligned to the air bag module backplate. This can cause the inflator to separate from the backplate during a deployment.
Risk: If the inflator separates from the back plate in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, this may cause the air bag or steering wheel components to separate and be propelled into the interior compartment, potentially seriously injuring the driver or other occupants. Additionally, the air bag may fail to properly inflate, increasing the risk of injury to the driver.
Remedy: GM has notified owners, and dealers will inspect the driver air bag module inflator for proper alignment, replacing the air bag, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began March 19, 2015. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 15037.

Investigations
1 NHTSA investigation on record
Investigations are agency reviews, not findings that a vehicle is defective.
In May 2019 the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened a Recall Query (RQ19-001) to assess the scope of General Motors (GM) recall 16V-054. ODI had received 50 complaints with allegations of loss of electric power steering assist while the vehicle was in motion. These complaints were for vehicles outside the scope of recall 16V-054 yet exhibited the same symptoms.ODI?s review focused on specific build months outside the recall scope that had a high electric power steering failure rate and failures that were the same or similar to those addressed by the remedy associated with recall 16V-054. ODI?s review of data supplied by GM confirmed a high failure rate for vehicles outside of the recall scope. On March 25, 2021, GM filed a defect information report recalling select 2015 Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon vehicles to remedy a potential loss of power steering assist while driving. The recall (21V-213) includes vehicles that were not addressed by recall 16V-054 and also prompted this recall query. In view of the recall, ODI is closing this recall query. Despite closing this investigation, NHTSA reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. The ODI complaints cited above can be viewed at www.nhtsa.gov under the following ODI identification numbers in a separate attachment. ?
