The engine coolant pump on my 2016 BMW 4 Series has an open recall (#24V-608), issued in August 2024. It’s been almost a year, and the remedy is still marked as "Not Available." Recently, my check engine light came on. I used my personal OBD-II scanner and retrieved fault code U019F, which indicates “Lost Communication with Engine Coolant Pump Control Module.” This is directly related to the recalled component. I contacted BMW of Bay Ridge in Brooklyn, NY, and they told me I need to pay $335 for a diagnostic, even though I already provided the fault code and it matches the recall issue. They said this is a “standard diagnostic fee,” and they do not offer reimbursement even if it turns out to be related to the recall. BMW North America customer support told me that if a dealership confirms the fault is recall-related, they may try to expedite the remedy. But to get that confirmation, I’m expected to pay out of pocket first — which I find unacceptable since the part is already under an open recall and has now failed. So far, no dealer or service center has inspected the vehicle officially because I don’t want to pay $335 to confirm something I already know. Yes, my safety is at risk — the engine cooling system is compromised, and I’m afraid to drive the car. I feel severely impacted and stuck in a situation where BMW won’t take responsibility unless I pay first. This is unreasonable. I believe BMW should cover diagnostics or offer another way to confirm the issue without forcing owners to pay out of pocket for their known safety defect. I’m requesting NHTSA’s help in resolving this issue.

On January 7, 2022 I was driving in the neighborhood and applied the brake to stop. As the car was slowing down, the engine revved to 3,000 RPM making stopping difficult. I came to a full stop and the engine continued to rev. I quickly lifted my foot off the brake pedal and re-applied the brake pedal and the RPM returned to idle. On the same day about an hour later, I experienced the same issue at a shopping center, only this time the engine RPM suddenly increased to 4,000 RPM. I tried to place the transmission in Park, but it wouldn't let me. I temporarily lifted my foot off the brake pedal and re-applied and the RPM returned to normal. In both cases I was able to bring the car to a full stop but had to apply heavy pressure on the pedal.

BOTH TIMES ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT ON THE FREEWAY AS THE CAR CAME TO A SUDDEN HALT AND I HAD NO CONTROL WITH IT SHIFTING INTO N. THE BMW DEALERSHIP & BMW ARE CLAIMING NOTHING IS WRONG. I DO NOT FEEL COMFORTABLE ACCEPTING THIS VEHICLE BACK UNTIL THIS ISSUE IS RESOLVED AND FEEL THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD LOOK INTO ANY ISSUE OF A VEHICLE AUTOMATICALLY SHIFTING INTO N AND POWERING DOWN WHILE DRIVING.

WHEN IT IS COLD WITH SNOW OR SLEET THE DOORS ARE DIFFICULT TO OPEN AND THEY WILL NOT CLOSE FULLY. THE DASH LIGHT INDICATES THAT THE DOOR IS OPEN. AFTER DRIVING FOR AWHILE THE DOOR WILL CLOSE. HAPPENS WITH ALL 4 DOORS.

WHEN DIVING ON THE FREEWAY I HAD AN DRIVE TERRAIN MALFUNCTION ERROR IN MY BMW 4281. MY CAR STARED TO SLOW DOWN EXTREMELY FAST AND I COULD NOT ACCELERATE TO GET OVER TO THE FAR RIGHT LANE SAFELY. EVERYTHING SEEMED TO BE IN SOME LOCK MODE AND I WOULD PRESS THE GAS AND WOULD ONLY GO LESS THAN 20 MPH. ALMOST GOT REAR ENDED 3 TIMES AND SIDESWIPED BY A BIG RIG TRYING TO MAKE IT OVER INTO THE FAR RIGHT EMERGENCY LANE. MY WIFE AND I THOUGHT WE WERE GOING TO BE KILLED OR CAUSE A MAJOR ACCIDENT. COULD NOT EVEN GET IN NEUTRAL JUST TO COAST OVER. MADE IT OVER CALLED SOS ROAD SIDE ASSISTANTS. TOLD ME WITH THESE ISSUES JUST NEED TO TURN OFF THE ENGINE FOR 5 MINUTES AND IT SHOULD RE-SET. I DID THAT AND IT SEEMED TO FIX THE ISSUE TO LET ME MAKE IT HOME. TOOK SIDED STREETS THE WHOLE WAY AND TOOK IT INTO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY ARE TELLING ME THAT THIS FUNCTION IS TO PROTECT THE CAR. I TOLD THEM WHAT ABOUT PROTECTING DRIVERS, PASSENGERS AND OTHERS ON THE ROAD WAY. THIS IS NOT A SAFETY DEVICE BUT SOMETHING THAT CAN TRIGGER A MAJOR ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS. THE DEALERSHIPS STATED THIS IS IN ALL NEWER BMW MAKES AND MODELS AND CAN BE TRIGGERED BY MANY MORE MALFUNCTIONS. IT CANNOT BE TURNED OFF. WAY TOO DANGEROUS! I HAVE OWNED BMW'S FOR OVER 20 YEARS AND NOW I WOULD NEVER DRIVE OR HAVE MY GRAND KIDS IN ANY BMW THAT HAS THIS FUNCTION DEVICE OR SHOULD SAY "MALFUNCTION" DEVICE.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 BMW 428I. WHILE DRIVING 75 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED AND "DRIVE TERRAIN MALFUNCTION/VEHICLE NOT ABLE TO START" DISPLAYED. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO COAST THE VEHICLE OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, AND RESTART IT AFTER NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS (30 MINUTE WAIT). THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL DEALER (BMW OF HENDERSON, 261 AUTO MALL DR, HENDERSON, NV, 8901) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL PUMP FAILED AND THE ENTIRE FUEL PUMP SYSTEM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. IN ADDITION, WHILE DRIVING HOME AFTER THE REPAIR, THE RUBBER WINDOW TRIM FLEW OFF AND THE CONTACT HEARD AN ABNORMAL HISSING SOUND. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER (SOUTH BAY BMW, 18800 HAWTHORNE BLVD, TORRANCE, CA, 90504), BUT THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE HISSING NOISE; HOWEVER, THEY REPAIRED THE RUBBER WINDOW TRIM. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURES AND STATED THAT THE FAILURES DID NOT WARRANT A SAFETY OBLIGATION FROM BMW. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 14,000.

TWO COLLISIONS AND SEVERAL OTHER INCIDENTS WHERE I WAS DRIVING 40-60 MPH, THE CARS IN FRONT OF ME SUDDENLY BRAKED, AND I IMMEDIATELY BRAKED WITH ENOUGH TIME AND DISTANCE TO COMPLETELY STOP THE VEHICLE BEFORE COLLIDING WITH THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. EACH TIME, ALTHOUGH I SLAMMED MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE IMMEDIATELY, THE CAR FELT LIKE IT WAS BRAKING, BUT NOT NEARLY AS FAST OR AS INTENSELY ENOUGH GIVEN THE AMOUNT OF PRESSURE I WAS APPLYING TO THE BRAKES AND THE TIME AND DISTANCE I HAD TO STOP BEFORE REACHING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. IN TWO OF THESE INSTANCES, WHERE THERE WERE CARS IN THE ADJACENT LANES, I WAS NOT ABLE TO SWERVE AWAY TO AVOID THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME, I COLLIDED WITH THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. IN OTHER INSTANCES, I WAS ONLY ABLE TO AVOID A COLLISION BY SWERVING INTO ADJACENT LANES.
