“Loss of motive power due to engine failure On January 16, 2025, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation PE25001 after receiving complaints and field reports concerning engine failures in MY2019-2024 GM’s full-size truck and SUV T1XX platform equipped with the L87 6.2L V8 engine. These complainants alleged engine bearing failures resulting in knocking and growling noises from the engine’s bottom end and in some cases more severe consequences such as broken connecting rods leading to engine damage, or engine failure. If the engine fails during vehicle operation, the vehicle will lose propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash. On April 24, 2025, GM issued recall 25V-274 to address the concern with L87 engines produced between March 1, 2021, and May 31, 2024.  GM cited the root cause as a supplier manufacturing and quality issues. GM’s  recall remedy will be either an oil change to an oil with a different viscosity or engine replacement depending on the results of the remedy inspection procedure. To date, ODI has received 1,157 allegations of engine bearing failure. GM submitted 55,464 reports in total, with 29,752 unique VINs. ODI continues to receive allegations of L87 engine failures which fall outside of the scope of recall 25V-274. Based on GM’s recall, ODI will close this PE. NHTSA will continue to investigate complaints of engine failure outside the scope of recall 25V-274 as part ofEngineering Analysis (EA25007). “The contact owned a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado. The contact stated while in traffic the contact heard an abnormal sound coming from the vehicle, but no warning light was illuminated. “While traveling at night on the highway at excess of 70mph the engine in my 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 6.2L L87 experienced a sudden, complete mechanical failure and loss of propulsion while driving. There were no warning lights, sounds or any other indication the motor would instantly stop working. This created an immediate crash hazard for me, my children and my dog. The vehicle is completely inoperable and I paid $125 to have it towed home. Upon talking to the dealership service ce manager they are refusing to inspect/replace my engine under Safety Recall N252494001. The same dealer is also requiring a large diagnostic fee prior to looking at the vehicle and has stated they will require additional fees as needed. They also refused to provide a loaner vehicle.”

“We purchased our 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 ZR2 in XXX, it was discovered in the purchase process that the vehicle had an active recall on the engine which was pending a "fix." This was completely downplayed by the dealership as a minor issue that would be addressed. We waited several weeks for the "fix," which was essentially a change in the oil viscosity. On XXX, our [XXX] son, was out of town, driving the vehicle, which suddenly lost all power on the highway leaving him completely stranded. The vehicle would not turn over at all or even shift into neutral. There were no warning signs, no sensors activated, in fact, the Chevy App showed (and still shows) the vehicle as "everything looks good" "no diagnostic issues!" We had the vehicle towed back to our hometown/dealership (Missoula, Chevrolet in Missoula, MT), where it has now been determined, the engine completely seized up/failed, the original "fix" was not adequate, and we are now waiting for a new engine to be put into the vehicle! After reading about other vehicle owners experiences, I am quite skeptical of the new engine as there have been multiple experiences where the new engines had the same issue. This recall is impacting the safety of drivers, most concerning was our [XXX] left stranded in a rural area with very spotty cell service, and the vehicle would not even shift to neutral to get it to a safer area, this needs to be addresses as soon as possible to prevent others from being put into this situation. “My company purchased a new 2022 Chevrolet Silverado RST from Bomnin Chevrolet Manassas in December 2022. The vehicle has been properly maintained according to GM’s recommended maintenance schedule, including routine oil changes and tire rotations. On February 10, 2025, the truck began shaking and repeatedly shutting off. Bomnin Chevrolet diagnosed a failed fuel injector and completed the repair. No loaner vehicle was available, requiring me to use Uber transportation until the vehicle was returned on February 12, 2025. On May 19, 2025, the truck again shut off multiple times while traveling approximately 45 mph. The vehicle was returned to Bomnin Chevrolet, where it remained for three days. No loaner vehicle was available, forcing me to rent a vehicle from Enterprise. The dealership ultimately stated it could not diagnose the problem and advised that the failure would have to occur again before it could be repaired. The vehicle was returned on May 22, 2025. On June 18, 2026, the engine shut off while driving and would not restart. The vehicle was towed to Bomnin Chevrolet. After several days, the dealership advised that the engine had suffered catastrophic failure due to a lifter issue and required complete replacement. GM approved the warranty repair; however, the replacement engine is on national backorder. No loaner truck was available. The dealership offered only a $44-per-day rental reimbursement, which is not comparable to the business use of a full-size pickup truck. As of June 29, 2026, the vehicle remains at the dealership, leaving my business without a suitable replacement vehicle and significantly impacting daily operations. I am requesting a voluntary manufacturer repurchase of the vehicle, reimbursement of all rental cars, and a fare financial compensation package for any inconvenience.”

According to the statement provided to my insurance company—and based on my direct experience—the truck appeared to take control of itself, and I could not prevent it from veering off the road. The impact caused significant front-end damage and triggered the deployment of the airbags. It is important to note that the lane keep assist feature was turned off at the time of the crash—we do not use or rely on this feature. Therefore, the event cannot be attributed to any automated steering correction system. The airbag deployment resulted in serious injuries to the front-seat passenger, who sustained severe burns and blistering to the right arm and hand. The injuries were substantial and are documented in photographs, which can be provided upon request. A VIN search confirmed that this vehicle has no active recalls. However, the circumstances of this crash suggest a potential malfunction in the electronic steering assist, throttle control, or transmission system. After the crash, the vehicle was towed to my insurance company’s preferred collision repair shop. However, I have not authorized any repairs or inspections. Yes, the truck is available for inspection. 2)This issue has happened to me on five occasions where I was traveling over 50 MPH and the vehicle violently jerked with my wife and children in the truck with me. This defect poses an immediate, severe safety hazard due to unpredictable, sudden engine/transmission jerk while operating at highway speeds. My main priority is my family! This failure compromises my ability to safely maneuver, accelerate, or steer the heavy-duty vehicle out of active lanes of traffic, dramatically increasing the risk of a high-speed rear-end collision or crash. 3) The problem has been reproduced by Rick Hendrick Chevrolet Norfolk and R.K. Chevrolet Virginia Beach. There are service invoices confirming these reproducible jerks and subsequent engine codes thrown. 4) No, I brought this up to General Motors as a safety issue but they have brushed off my concerns. 5) The second time I had the violent jerk I had a message appear on my DTC that stated "174 mi Until 65 MPH Max Speed and Service Emission System See Owner's Manual" that was on 2/21/2026. Extra Note: The vehicle sat disabled at a dealership service center for 21 cumulative days during the initial attempt to repair this specific defect under TSB #24-NA-012. Merely 58 days after the repair, the identical crankshaft position sensor circuit/wiring failure reoccurred while driving, resulting in secondary engine failure and requiring a visit to an independent service facility for diagnostic verification and wiring replacement. Internal vehicle history confirms that prior to my truck ownership the crankshaft position sensor was replaced in December 2025 weeks before I purchased the truck.”

“While driving my 2022 Chevrolet Silverado, the vehicle suddenly veered to the right without any driver input, ultimately crashing into a concrete guardrail. At the time of the incident, I was merging into the left lane with my turn signal activated and traveling below the posted speed limit. According to the statement provided to my insurance company—and based on my direct experience—the truck appeared to take control of itself, and I could not prevent it from veering off the road. The impact caused significant front-end damage and triggered the deployment of the airbags. It is important to note that the lane keep assist feature was turned off at the time of the crash—we do not use or rely on this feature. Therefore, the event cannot be attributed to any automated steering correction system. The airbag deployment resulted in serious injuries to the front-seat passenger, who sustained severe burns and blistering to the right arm and hand. The injuries were substantial and are documented in photographs, which can be provided upon request. A VIN search confirmed that this vehicle has no active recalls. However, the circumstances of this crash suggest a potential malfunction in the electronic steering assist, throttle control, or transmission system. After the crash, the vehicle was towed to my insurance company’s preferred collision repair shop. However, I have not authorized any repairs or inspections. I specifically instructed the shop to delay all work until after I file this safety complaint and have the opportunity to request a third-party inspection. The vehicle remains in its post-crash condition, and to the best of my knowledge, the Event Data Recorder (EDR) has not been altered and should still contain valuable diagnostic data. I respectfully request that this incident be investigated as a potential vehicle safety defect. I am providing photographic evidence of the crash damage and resulting injuries.”

The contact stated while his wife was in a parking lot, she inadvertently depressed the accelerator as she was driving out of the parking lot, she crashed into a light pole with the front end of the vehicle in the center. The contact stated that the hood was crushed back to just before the front wheel wells. The front bumper was also crushed by the impact with the concrete stand that the light pole was attached. The contact stated that the concrete pillar had been moved back a few feet, and the light pole had been broken and bent. The contact said that the air bags had not deployed. The contact stated that his wife had suffered minor facial bruising and bruising to both knees from hitting the steering wheel and the bottom of the dashboard. There were no police or emergency services at the scene. The vehicle had been towed to a collision center and repair work had not started. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 12,000.”

The same dealer is also requiring a large diagnostic fee prior to looking at the vehicle and has stated they will require additional fees as needed. They also refused to provide a loaner vehicle.”

This was completely downplayed by the dealership as a minor issue that would be addressed. We waited several weeks for the "fix," which was essentially a change in the oil viscosity. On XXX, our [XXX] son, was out of town, driving the vehicle, which suddenly lost all power on the highway leaving him completely stranded. The vehicle would not turn over at all or even shift into neutral. There were no warning signs, no sensors activated, in fact, the Chevy App showed (and still shows) the vehicle as "everything looks good" "no diagnostic issues!" We had the vehicle towed back to our hometown/dealership (Missoula, Chevrolet in Missoula, MT), where it has now been determined, the engine completely seized up/failed, the original "fix" was not adequate, and we are now waiting for a new engine to be put into the vehicle! After reading about other vehicle owners experiences, I am quite skeptical of the new engine as there have been multiple experiences where the new engines had the same issue. This recall is impacting the safety of drivers, most concerning was our [XXX] left stranded in a rural area with very spotty cell service, and the vehicle would not even shift to neutral to get it to a safer area, this needs to be addresses as soon as possible to prevent others from being put into this situation. “My company purchased a new 2022 Chevrolet Silverado RST from Bomnin Chevrolet Manassas in December 2022. The vehicle has been properly maintained according to GM’s recommended maintenance schedule, including routine oil changes and tire rotations. On February 10, 2025, the truck began shaking and repeatedly shutting off. Bomnin Chevrolet diagnosed a failed fuel injector and completed the repair. No loaner vehicle was available, requiring me to use Uber transportation until the vehicle was returned on February 12, 2025. On May 19, 2025, the truck again shut off multiple times while traveling approximately 45 mph. The vehicle was returned to Bomnin Chevrolet, where it remained for three days. No loaner vehicle was available, forcing me to rent a vehicle from Enterprise. The dealership ultimately stated it could not diagnose the problem and advised that the failure would have to occur again before it could be repaired. The vehicle was returned on May 22, 2025. On June 18, 2026, the engine shut off while driving and would not restart. The vehicle was towed to Bomnin Chevrolet. After several days, the dealership advised that the engine had suffered catastrophic failure due to a lifter issue and required complete replacement. GM approved the warranty repair; however, the replacement engine is on national backorder. No loaner truck was available. The dealership offered only a $44-per-day rental reimbursement, which is not comparable to the business use of a full-size pickup truck. As of June 29, 2026, the vehicle remains at the dealership, leaving my business without a suitable replacement vehicle and significantly impacting daily operations. I am requesting a voluntary manufacturer repurchase of the vehicle, reimbursement of all rental cars, and a fare financial compensation package for any inconvenience.”

“The internal transmission Output Shaft Speed Sensor (OSS) and its associated internal circuit/lead frame assembly failed. The vehicle is fully intact, operational, and available for inspection upon request. When the Output Shaft Speed Sensor intermittently loses its signal (dropping to 0 RPM while the vehicle is stopped at red lights or in traffic), it forces the vehicle into an immediate electronic "limp mode." Upon pressing the gas pedal to accelerate, the transmission violently slams into gear with massive mechanical force. This sudden, unpredictable jerking and hesitation while accelerating into active traffic creates an immediate risk of being rear-ended, losing traction, or losing control of the heavy vehicle in an intersection. The problem was officially confirmed via a diagnostic computer scan by an authorized GM dealership (Crews Chevrolet), which pulled and documented history codes P0722 (Output Shaft Speed Sensor Circuit No Signal) and P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction Warning). This issue is a documented manufacturing and electrical defect covered under General Motors Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) #24-NA-012. Yes, the truck is available for inspection. 2)This issue has happened to me on five occasions where I was traveling over 50 MPH and the vehicle violently jerked with my wife and children in the truck with me. This defect poses an immediate, severe safety hazard due to unpredictable, sudden engine/transmission jerk while operating at highway speeds. My main priority is my family! This failure compromises my ability to safely maneuver, accelerate, or steer the heavy-duty vehicle out of active lanes of traffic, dramatically increasing the risk of a high-speed rear-end collision or crash. 3) The problem has been reproduced by Rick Hendrick Chevrolet Norfolk and R.K. Chevrolet Virginia Beach. There are service invoices confirming these reproducible jerks and subsequent engine codes thrown. 4) No, I brought this up to General Motors as a safety issue but they have brushed off my concerns. 5) The second time I had the violent jerk I had a message appear on my DTC that stated "174 mi Until 65 MPH Max Speed and Service Emission System See Owner's Manual" that was on 2/21/2026. Extra Note: The vehicle sat disabled at a dealership service center for 21 cumulative days during the initial attempt to repair this specific defect under TSB #24-NA-012. Merely 58 days after the repair, the identical crankshaft position sensor circuit/wiring failure reoccurred while driving, resulting in secondary engine failure and requiring a visit to an independent service facility for diagnostic verification and wiring replacement. Internal vehicle history confirms that prior to my truck ownership the crankshaft position sensor was replaced in December 2025 weeks before I purchased the truck.”

Of the 1,157 reports received, 173 are outside of the scope of recall 25V-274. “Loss of motive power due to engine failure On January 16, 2025, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation PE25001 after receiving complaints and field reports concerning engine failures in MY2019-2024 GM’s full-size truck and SUV T1XX platform equipped with the L87 6.2L V8 engine. These complainants alleged engine bearing failures resulting in knocking and growling noises from the engine’s bottom end and in some cases more severe consequences such as broken connecting rods leading to engine damage, or engine failure. If the engine fails during vehicle operation, the vehicle will lose propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash. On April 24, 2025, GM issued recall 25V-274 to address the concern with L87 engines produced between March 1, 2021, and May 31, 2024.  GM cited the root cause as a supplier manufacturing and quality issues. GM’s  recall remedy will be either an oil change to an oil with a different viscosity or engine replacement depending on the results of the remedy inspection procedure. To date, ODI has received 1,157 allegations of engine bearing failure. GM submitted 55,464 reports in total, with 29,752 unique VINs. ODI continues to receive allegations of L87 engine failures which fall outside of the scope of recall 25V-274. Based on GM’s recall, ODI will close this PE.
