The brakes on my 2010 Genesis Coupe suddenly stopped working while on the freeway, luckily I was able to swerve into the carpool lane and avoid an accident. Upon taking it to Tuttle Click Hyundai I was told a master technician had to review it, which would cost $200 just to look at it. When the technician looked at the car, I was told it needed a new Brake Booster. Hyundai apparently no longer makes this part so the dealership had to locate an aftermarket replacement which costs about $1,100. I did note to the dealership that there was recalls on other 2010 Genesis cars for similar issues, but was told the recall was for the sedans, not the coupe and that they/Hyundai would not cover it. Upon installing the brake booster and bleeding the brakes, it was found that I also need a new ABS Module, which will cost up to $4,000 to find and install. Another user posted this same issue to the NHTSA in October 2022.

The 2.0T engine failed and the vehicle is currently at Hyundai service department waiting on my warranty company to do an inspection of the engine. My safety was at risk as the engine failed during normal operation of the vehicle on a busy city street near a blind curve which other vehicles travel at high rates of speed. Hyundai Service department has confirmed the engine has failed which it needs to be replaced/rebuilt. Hyundai Service department has inspected the vehicle. Waiting on inspection from warranty company. There were no warning lights or symptoms prior to the engine failure. Thankfully I was not operating the vehicle on the expressway as I normally do on my way home which could have put me in a much more dangerous scenario when the engine failed. When the engine failed it started to effect other components in the vehicle, as I started to completely lose the ability to maneuver the vehicle putting myself in a dangerous situation.

On September 22, 2022 while traveling at about 65 mph on state highway 57 in CA, I came upon a sudden group of cars hitting their brakes and had to slam on my brakes but my 2010 Genesis Coupe did not stop and I had to swerve into an entrance lane on my right to avoid a serious collision. Fortunately there were no cars entering the highway on that entrance. I was then able to drive a short distance home. On May 26, 2022 I had my car serviced including the brakes by Service Auto Care and my car gave me no brake problems until this incident. On September 23 I brought my Genesis Coupe to Service Auto and explained what happened. The brakes worked fine on the way to the shop. They tested the brakes and said that the ABS module was defective but it was just put under a 15 year extended warranty by Hyundai on May 19, 2022 and to take it to the closest dealer. The dealer, Russell Westbrook Hyundai of Anaheim told me only the sedan was covered. This dangerous defect could occur at any time and cause a severe accident. I hope this report is helpful to the NHTSA and the defective part is replaced without charge. The dealership charged me $205 for an estimate, then wanted $2200 to re-do the brakes and then approximately $4000 to replace the ABS module. I have documents to back up everything I have presented.

WHILE DRIVING MY GENESIS 2010 SEDAN, THE BATTERY LIGHT ILLUMINATED, THEN THE POWER STEERING DID NOT RESPOND. I WAS ABOUT 1/2 MILES FROM MY HOUSE AND I HAD TO WRESTLE WITH MY STEERING WHEEL UNTIL I GOT HOME. THE SCARY PART WAS THAT I UNEXPECTEDLY LOST POWER STEERING DURING A TURN AT THE TRAFFIC LIGHT. LUCKILY, NO ON COMING TRAFFIC WAS NEAR AS I COMPLETED THE TURN ON THE OPPOSITE SLIDE OF THE STREET. I FORTUNATELY ARRIVE HOME, PARKED THE VEHICLE AND HAD IT TOWED TO THE MECHANICS. IF THE AIR BAGS HAD DEPLOYED, I WOULD'VE WALKED AWAY UNINJURED. I WAS ALSO TRAPPED WHEN MY HAND WENT THROUGH THE TOP WINDOW. I WAS LEFT HANGING AND HAD TO HOLD MY FACE WITH MY FREE HAND TO STOP THE BLEEDING UNTIL HELP ARRIVED. IF TOP AIRBAGS WOULD'VE DEPLOYED, MY HAND WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN CAUGHT UNDER THE VEHICLE. HELLO NHTSA ADMINISTRATOR, I BOUGHT A NEW HYUNDAI GENESIS IN MARCH 2010. AROUND AUGUST 2010, I HAD A SMALL FENDER BENDER IN THE PARKING LOT. TO KEEP WARRANTY INTACT ON THE CAR, HYUNDAI INSISTED THAT THE WIRING HARNESS ON THE CAR BE REPLACED, WHICH I DID FOR APPROXIMATELY $5000. SINCE THEN, I HAVE HAD MULTIPLE ELECTRONIC ITEMS GO BAD IN THE CAR. I REPLACED SOME OF THESE AT MY OWN EXPENSE. BUT THE PROBLEM HAS GOTTEN WORSE WITH SOME EXPENSIVE ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS GOING BAD OVER THE LAST 2 YEARS. IN NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES, THESE COMPONENTS SHOULD NOT GO BAD OVER THE LIFE OF THE CAR, AND CERTAINLY NOT AT A FREQUENCY THAT THEY HAVE FAILED IN MY CAR. I ATTRIBUTE THESE FAILURES TO BAD/DEFECTIVE JOB DONE DURING WIRING HARNESS REPLACEMENT. BUT HYUNDAI HAS REFUSED TO ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY SINCE THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY. BELOW IS A LIST OF THE BAD COMPONENTS, APPROXIMATE DATE OF THE COMPONENT GOING BAD, WHETHER IT IS REPLACED/FIXED AND APPROXIMATE EXPENSE TO FIX THEM 1. TELESCOPIC STEERING WHEEL--2015--REPAIRED AS PART OF WARRANTY 2. POWER SWITCH ASSEMBLY DRIVER'S SEAT--JAN 2016--$236.19--PAID OUT-OF-POCKET TO GET IT REPLACED 3. JOG DIAL ASSEMBLY--OCT 2016--$1031.70--PAID OUT-OF-POCKET TO GET IT REPLACED 4. FRONT CABIN DOME LIGHT ASSEMBLY--FEB 2017--$376.91--PAID OUT-OF-POCKET TO GET IT REPLACED 5. SMART CRUISE CONTROL--MAR 2017--NOT REPLACED--DEALERSHIP GAVE ME A QUOTE OF ~$4500 TO REPLACE 6. PASSENGER CABIN DOME LIGHT ASSEMBLY--AUG 2017--NOT REPLACED--$4500 ESTIMATE TO REPLACE 7. MULTI DISC CD PLAYER--FEB 2018--NOT REPLACED--$1000 ESTIMATE TO REPLACE I WOULD LIKE NHTSA TO INVESTIGATE HYUNDAI FOR THIS MATTER AND FORCE THEM TO PAY FOR REPAIRS. AS A CONSUMER, I FEED CHEATED AND BEING FORCED TO DOUBLE PAY FOR REPAIRS - ONCE FOR THE WIRING HARNESS REPLACEMENT AND NOW FOR ALL PROBLEMS ATTRIBUTED TO IT. SINCERELY, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

BACKGROUND: AM ORIGINAL OWNER OF THIS 2010 HYUNDAI GENESIS THAT WAS PURCHASED JULY 31, 2010 AND THAT CURRENTLY HAS LESS THAN 35,000 MILES ON IT. ISSUE: UNEXPECTEDLY, THE BRAKES BECAME "SQUISHY" (I.E. BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED A LONG DISTANCE BEFORE ENGAGING BRAKES). ADVISED BY HYUNDAI DEALER THAT IT IS A FAULTY HECU UNIT AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED FOR $3,800. NOTE: THE BRAKE FLUID WAS REPLACED IN APRIL 2013 AND THE HECU UNIT WAS SUPPOSEDLY INSPECTED IN JANUARY 2014. I BELIEVE THESE WERE DONE IN RESPONSE TO PRIOR RECALLS. THAT SAID, UPON SOME FURTHER READING ON THE INTERNET, I AM UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT WHEN THIS PROBLEM WAS PREVIOUSLY IDENTIFIED FOR RECALL, THE RECALL SHOULD HAVE RESULTED IN MY HECU UNIT BEING REPLACED, NOT JUST INSPECTED. I INTEND TO RAISE THIS ISSUE WITH THE HYUNDAI DEALER AND, HOPEFULLY, HYUNDAI WILL STAND BEHIND THE REPLACEMENT OF THE HECU UNIT WITHOUT CHARGING ME.

I BOUGHT THE CAR USED WITH 32,500 MILES. FROM DAY 1 THERE WAS A GRIND GOING INTO 5TH GEAR. THIS WAS A KNOWN PROBLEM, BUT NO TSB OR RECALL WAS EVER SENT OUT ABOUT IT. JUST A TSB TO CHANGE THE FLUID . AT 82,000 MILES THE 5TH GEAR SYNCHRO BROKE. I HAD TO BUY A USED TRANSMISSION FROM THE JUNK YARD AND HAD IT INSTALLED FOR $820 TOTAL INCLUDING THE TRANSMISSION, LABOR AND FLUID. WHY WOULD THEY CLAIM THEY HAVE A 10 YEAR/100,000 MILE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY, WHEN IT ONLY COVERS THE FIRST OWNER. AND WHY WOULD THEY KNOW ABOUT THE 5TH GEAR GRIND AND NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT.

DEALER CONFIRMED THE BREAKS FAILED AND THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS BREAK FAILURES REPORTED WITH GENESSIS. HAD RECENTLY GOT BREAKS CHECKED AND WAS TOLD 'EVERY THING IS FINE'. QUESTION IS WHY DIDN'T HYUNDAI DO A RECALL AND PROACTIVELY REPLACE MY BREAK SYSTEM? ONE WHOLE DAY OF SUSPENSE ABOUT HOW MUCH IT WILL COST ME... THE BRAKES MALFUNCTIONED WHILE DRIVING ON A LOCAL ROAD. STEPPED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, FELT NORMAL AT FIRST, THEN PEDAL GAVE WAY ALMOST TO THE FLOOR AND BRAKING POWER WAS VERY LITTLE. PUMPING THE BRAKE PEDAL RECOVERED SOME BRAKE POWER ONLY TEMPORARILY. PULLED OVER AND SHUT DOWN THE CAR. ABOUT AN HOUR LATER, RESTARTED THE CAR AND THE BRAKES WERE STILL POOR. BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALER WHO COULD NOT WORK ON IT UNTIL THE NEXT DAY. THE NEXT DAY THE DEALER FOUND NO PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKES AND I REFUSED TO TAKE BACK THE CAR UNTIL SOMETHING WAS DONE. THE DEALER KEPT THE CAR ABOUT SIX WEEKS AND ROAD TESTED IT ALMOST EVERY DAY BUT COULD NOT PROVOKE THE PROBLEM TO RETURN. I ASKED THE DEALER TO REPLACE ANY OR ALL PARTS THAT COULD BE THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. THE DEALER REFUSED TO DO SUCH A THING AND ALSO STATED THAT THERE WAS NO WAY FOR HYUNDAI TO DIAGNOSE THE TROUBLE. THEY RELIED ON ONLY THE ELECTRONIC SENSORS AND SINCE THERE WERE NO FAULT CODES THEY WOULD NOT TAKE ANY LIABILITY TO REPLACE PARTS ON A PRESUMPTIVE BASIS. I CONSIDERED THE CAR UNTRUSTWORTHY AND SAID IT SHOULD NOT BE DRIVEN. I TRADED THE CAR IN AT THE SAME DEALER FOR ANOTHER CAR WITH A DIFFERENT BRAKING SYSTEM DESIGN. *TR

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2010-2016 Genesis Coupe vehicles manufactured December 12, 2008, to June 11, 2016. The electrical harness connector for the front passenger seat Occupant Classification System (OCS) may dislodge when the seat is moved.

Risk: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, the disconnected OCS would, by default, cause the first stage, and only the first stage, of the air bag to deploy, whether there is a child seat in the front seat and the bag should not deploy or if the crash is severe and both stages should deploy. Either scenario increases the risk of injury to the front seat occupant.

Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will secure the OCS connector to prevent it from disconnecting, free of charge. Parts are not currently available and a second letter will be sent to owners when parts are available. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 151.

Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.

Risk: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2010-2013 Genesis Coupe vehicles. A return spring in the ignition lock switch may fracture, which can result in unintended vehicle movement when the vehicle is started in gear, without the parking brake applied.

Risk: Unintended vehicle movement can increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will replace the ignition lock switch, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 4, 2024. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 266.

Investigations

1 NHTSA investigation on record

Investigations are agency reviews, not findings that a vehicle is defective.

Brake hydraulic control module failure

On October 28, 2013, Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) submitted a Defect Information Report (DIR) to NHTSA describing a safety defect in the braking system of approximately 43,500 model year (MY) 2009 through 2012 Hyundai Genesis sedans (NHTSA Recall No. 13V-489).The Hyundai report indicates that the recalled vehicles may contain brake fluid that does not sufficiently inhibit corrosion on the zinc plating of control valve armatures in the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) module. The DIR indicated that, over time, the build-up of corrosion products may affect operation of HECU control valves, resulting in a low/soft brake pedal with reduced brake effectiveness, which may increase the risk of a crash. In October 2011, the HECU supplier notified Hyundai that the brake fluid used in production plants was causing corrosion of valve armatures in the control module. The supplier changed the coating of the valve armatures in late March 2012 to correct the problem in production vehicles.Hyundai's recall includes Genesis vehicles produced prior to the implementation of the HECU change. In March 2013, Hyundai initiated a Service Campaign (TL6) to replace brake fluid in the subject vehicles with brake fluid with better corrosion resistance properties.According to Hyundai's DIR letter, after PE13-033 was opened, the company noted that some of the vehicles serviced in the TL6 campaign subsequently required HECU replacement. This was an indication that internal corrosion had progressed enough to affect valve operation and brake performance, prompting Hyundai to conduct a safety recall.Hyundai's repair procedures for 13V-489 require brake system flushing and replacement in all recalled vehicles with a new fluid containing the necessary corrosion inhibitor. In addition, for vehicles produced prior to June 1, 2010, dealers will perform an inspection procedure to verify that the HECU is functioning properly and replace units that do not meet the test requirements.Hyundai indicated that, based on analysis of claim data, only vehicles produced prior to June 1, 2010 have been in service long enough to require the additional inspection/replacement of the HECU. Analysis of failure data reported to NHTSA and provided by Hyundai in response to ODI's information request letter for PE13-033 identified 756 complaints and 1,683 warranty claims for 30,114 subject vehicles produced prior to June 1, 2010, resulting in a complaint rate of 25.1 incidents per thousand vehicles (IPTV) and a claim rate of 5.6 percent. The MY 2009 vehicles, with the longest exposure times, experienced the highest complaint (33.5 IPTV) and warranty (7.0 percent) rates. For the 45,639 subject vehicles produced after June 1, 2010, ODI identified 13 complaints and 34 warranty claims, resulting in a complaint rate of 0.3 IPTV and a warranty claim rate of 0.1 percent, indicating that the brake fluid corrosion concern had not progressed far enough to result in significant rates of brake system performance symptoms in those vehicles. This investigation is closed.ODI will continue to monitor complaints to evaluate the effectiveness of Hyundai's recall. The VOQs noted in the Failure Report are: 10569231, 10560898, 10560495, 10559360, 10558279, 10558264, 10556964, 10556631, 10556577, 10556322, 10554988, 10554802, 10554122, 10552958, 10551817, 10551157, 10551110, 10551092, 10550791, 10550773, 10550431, 10549750, 10549634, 10549629, 10549567, 10549402, 10549376, 10549270, 10549228, 10549186, 10549021, 10548903, 10548823, 10548791, 10548737, 10548722, 10548716, 10548705, 10546565, 10544803, 10543663, 10542962, 10541959, 10541741, 10538208, 10537934, 10536652, 105354
