2015 GMC Canyon

Was driving my truck and would randomly lose power steering while driving. When the power steering cut out it would jerk the steering wheel to the left a little bit and if I pulled over and turned the key off and turned it back on, it would reset and start working until it happened again, which could be five minutes later or 20 minutes later. It would cut out at any given time. I am the second owner of this vehicle and once this problem started happening I looked into it and found out that there was a recall on this, and the recall had been satisfied in 2021 but the problem obviously was not fixed. Tried calling several dealerships with no luck and was forced to get it fixed at my regular shop at a cost of $3023.07. I have receipts for the repair. This is clearly an issue that was never resolved.

Driving I15 and went to take my exit and the power steering went out and I almost rolled the truck now the eps won’t even come on. There needs to be a recall for my vin like there is for all other trucks that year. There was no warning just shut off immediately if my wife was driving she would’ve rolled the truck. My 2015 GMC CANYON had been running for approximately 10 minutes. I was on the highway driving home from the DFW airport doing 65mph. My wife was we me as we were driving home from a trip to visit our grandchildren. A message popped up on the display that said my power steering had failed, a chime also alerted me. It was immediately noticeable as I could barely turn the steering wheel. If I had been in a turn I may not have been able to control the truck and may have caused an accident. The truck has 94,000 miles on the odometer. Thank you.

I own a 2015 GMC Canyon that developed repeated and serious fuel-system and engine problems beginning around 56,000 miles. The vehicle experienced fuel contamination (water in the fuel system), multiple fuel injectors failing and sticking open, repeated misfires across several cylinders, and engine stalling/shutdown while driving. The truck was towed multiple times and repaired repeatedly by an authorized GMC dealership. Repairs included injector replacements, fuel pipe replacement, fuel-system cleaning, and related work. Technician notes show that broader repairs were recommended but not fully authorized, and the same problems continued to return. Despite the dealership later stating the vehicle was repaired, there is no written safety certification, no documented fuel-system integrity testing, and no GM engineering clearance confirming the vehicle is safe to operate. Because of the repeated failures and risk of fire or loss of power, I do not feel the vehicle is safe to drive. I personally paid over $6,000 out of pocket for fuel contamination repairs and spark plug replacement (not including towing), after warranty coverage denied some repairs as “water damage.” The vehicle has been unsafe or inoperable for extended periods. I am reporting this because repeated fuel-system failures and engine shutdown present a serious safety risk and may affect other vehicles of the same model.

GMC CANYON LOOSES STEERING ASSIST WHILE DRIVING AND THE WHEEL HAS TO BE TURNED BY APPLYING A LOT OF FORCE. HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING A BUSY ROAD IN JULY 10 2025. MYSELF, SISTER AND NIECE ALMOST GOT KILLED TRYING TO GET THE VEHICLE FROM THE HOV LANE TO THE SHOULDER. The first occurrence (post recall 21V213000 completion 8/24/2021), was Sunday 9/21/2025 . I was just accelerating after a stop sign turning left and I lost power steering and stabilitrak. Yes it is available for inspection if requested. I was at risk of being in an accident. No it has not been confirmed by a dealer or independent service. The contact's grandmother owned a 2015 GMC Canyon. The contact stated that her grandfather was driving approximately 60 MPH on the freeway while her grandmother was occupying the front passenger's side seat. The contact stated that while the driver was attempting to switch to the right lane, the steering wheel locked up and the vehicle shut off unexpectedly. The driver was unable to pull to the side of the road and turned on the hazard lights. The contact stated that another van driving 80 MPH crashed into the vehicle, and the van caught on fire; however, the vehicle of the contact's grandparents did not catch on fire. The vehicle was then rear-ended by three other vehicles, causing the bed of the vehicle to be smooshed into the cab, and the driver's side of the vehicle was smooshed into the center divider wall. The center divider wall might have been damaged. The driver sustained whiplash and was thrown across his wife's lap. The emergency services assisted the driver out of the vehicle and put the driver on a stretcher. The contact's grandmother was assisted out of the vehicle. The contact stated that only the driver's side and passenger's side curtain air bags deployed. The driver was transported to the hospital by emergency services. The contact stated that the driver sustained a crushed spine and severed lower nerves, causing the lower body paralysis. Additionally, the driver sustained broken ribs, 15-20 staples across his head, ruptured lungs, which caused a loss of 7 pints of blood. The driver received a transfusion of 5 pints of blood. The driver's wife sustained a bruised right cheekbone, soreness on the face, the hand, the thumb, and the body. Both passengers were currently receiving medical assistance. It was unknown whether the other drivers sustained injuries. A police report was filed, and the police confirmed that four vehicles had crashed into the vehicle. The police report information was not available. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot, where it was totaled. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. Stabiltrak system stops working randomly all the time. It is seemingly random. It can do it as soon as I crank the truck, but more commonly it happens when I am driving. The ABS also will cause the truck to pull harder in one direction either left or right randomly. I have to put pressure on the steering will in the opposite direction to keep the vehicle in the middle of the lane. Stabiltrak sensor 1st went off around October 2023. It typically doesn't come back on immediately if I power cycle the truck. No accident to report yet but when the power steering does no work while I'm driving, it is extremely hard to turn.

While driving the vehicle, or sometimes upon starting the vehicle, the Power Steering Assist will intermittently malfunction and I will have no power steering. When this happens while I am driving it puts me and others at risk because I have reduced my ability to steer. I have not had this diagnosed by the dealer, but I will soon. I have not had the component inspected by anyone at this time. When this occurs both the Power Steering Assist and Traction Control warning lights com on. I found a recall for this exact problem on the year and model of this truck. (Recall # N202325410) I called both my local dealer and GM Assistance and was told that my vehicle was not part of the recall. GMC issued a service bulletin #16019 stating that the HVAC temperature control valve (No. 15-51369) was prone to break causing the defrost to become inoperable. This is clearly a safety concern. However, GMC did not issue a recall. In addition, GMC had a limited time window for customers to address the problem. The dealerships were instructed to examine the part and if faulty, replace it. My GMC Canyon did not experience this problem until after the service bulletin expired. GMC stated that this was not a safety recall. Is visibility not a safety hazard?

While driving, the power steering stops working. I was traveling at approx 55 mph with my daughter in the car and the power steering quit. Alert lights came on the dash. I managed to slow down and turn off the highway. I turned the truck off and when I turned it back on it was fine. Drove for another 10 minutes to get home and it went out again at a stop light. I found a place to pull over and turned it off and back on and it stopped doing it again. There is a recall for this issue on this vehicle but evidently mine was not on the recall or was fixed prior to me owning it. I have not checked with the dealership, but I’m assuming it will be a large bill to get it taken care of. Hopefully it does not go out at a bad time.

The power steering will intermittently fail at random times. I can feel the change in the steering wheel, followed immediately by the warning message on the screen above the wheel reading "Stabilitrak Failure" and 4 loud chimes from the speakers. This first happened in June of 2022. When I turned the truck off and on again, the same warning appeared on the screen but power steering was restored. This didn't happen again until earlier this year (Feb 2024). This issue happened a few times at low speed, during which it was extremely difficult to steer. I narrowly avoided an accident both times due to quick breaking. I learned about recall bulletin 15595A which describes this issue for my make, model and year. I contacted GE about this issue but they pushed back continuously referencing the fact that my VIN was not part of the recall. They eventually agreed to inspect my truck to determine if my issue is the same as the recall, but only if I paid $250 for a diagnostic. I went to the dealership today and the manager told me everything would be out of pocket, including any repairs. He was not willing to note my case # 9-12939029688 and explicitly stated "this won't be covered no matter what". I left without performing the diagnostic so as not to waste time and money, as it was clear GM had not been communicating with the dealer as they promised during our phone calls. Currently my power steering fails almost every time I drive, typically within 20 minutes of starting up.

I experienced the loss of power steering while driving. It was almost impossible to steer the vehicle while driving. I went on line and noticed a recall for my exact vehicle of the exact problem. The recall bulletin 15595A, was dated February 2016 and explained that the steering gear torque sensor cover assembly was to be replaced. However, apparently my VIN number was not listed. I went to the dealer and it was diagnosed with Code C0545(power steering problem). The dealer recommended the same repairs as the recall notice. The dealer showed no interest in contacting GM to see if this can be fixed by this recall. They claimed because of the year and mileage that they would not move forward with this. I contacted GM myself and explained the situation. I was told that GM would not cost assist with this problem. I find it odd that GM recognized this issue as a real safety hazard on the same make, year and model of my vehicle and refuses to assist in the repairs. The mileage and year has nothing to do with this problem. The problem was and is an existing problem with this particular vehicle. This issue is a sporadic issue and and started approximately [XXX] and continues. I feel this problem is an existing problem with all of these year, makes and models whether the VIN number was listed or not!! It's an accident waiting to happen!! I have had this car for 4 years and have had to replace 7 door locks. All quit working. The doors will not lock when the buttons are pushed which is a major security issue.

The contact owns a 2015 GMC Canyon. The contact stated while driving approximately 70 MPH, the vehicle lost power steering functionality. The stabili-trak warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that he pulled into a parking lot. The contact stated that he turned off and restarted the vehicle, and the power steering became functional; however, the failure recurred while driving to the residence. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the power steering gear had failed. The dealer determined that the power steering gear box needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V054000 (Steering) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 92,000.

I was driving my truck when, LOSS OF POWER STEERING ASSIST AND MY DASHBOARD DISPLAYED WARNINGS. I was able to slow and pull off to the side and stop safely. I turned the car off and back on it cleared for a short time within that week it happened 3 other times. Years 2014-2015 have had several recalls for the steering. My truck was not on the recall but having the same issues.

Service brake assist light comes on and Vehicle loses braking power. Brake pedal gets hard and unable to stop if needed and has potential of injury / accidental death. This similar problem has been recalled in the larger trucks /SUVs due to safety issues. It appears it's also happening in the smaller truck's canyon and Colorado's as well, however no recalls. Many blogs online discussing the issues and failures of the braking system.

UNKNOWN: Power Steering fail while driving. Making it a serious safety and dangerous hazard. Making steering almost impossible to turn the wheel and I have to pull off to the side of the road, park, turn the engine off, wait a few minutes and turn the key (engine) back on. Most times it will reset and I have power again and sometimes it doesn’t. This has happened many times and I have called GMC to see if there’s a recall but they said none. I have taken it to my local mechanic and he stated that it can be an electrical related issue and told me to take it to GMC dealer repair shop in the area.

on 5/24/2023 as I was driving the wheel became stiff, I was unable to continue driving. I had to shut down in the middle of the road. I turned the vehicle off and restarted it. This fixed the issue. on 5/25/2023 as I was driving the exact same situation occured. I have not driven the vehicle since parking it at a relatives driveway . The warning light to service power steering came on both times.

My wife drives this vehicle. Ever since the 2021 recall "fix", we've been having intermittent issues with two errors; service stabilitrak light and loss of power steering in the truck. This poses major safety issues as my wife is not strong enough to drive without power steering. Once the vehicle is turned off, it resets and the other goes away, but comes back randomly while driving. Latest incident listed below. We've had it looked at multiple times just to have an inability to reproduce the issue at the dealership or shop, except for this most recent time. They said the fix that was done for the safety recall in 2021 didn't actually fix the issue, which was the steering rack needing replaced at $1600. It's unbelievable to think the GM will not actually fix a known safety issue across many Colorados and Canyons (quick Internet search will prove the vastness of the issue). As you can see from the uploaded recall letter, this is the exact issue that still has not been addressed with a fix. Whatever they did before did not fix it at all.

Risk: An improperly inflated air bag increases the risk of injury in a crash.

A poor electrical connection within the steering gear connector may cause a loss of power steering assist.

Risk: A loss or reduction in power steering assist may increase the risk of a crash.

The affected vehicles may experience the front brake calipers leaking brake fluid. This is due to air pockets, an imperfection in the metal caliper body.

Risk: If the vehicle experiences a brake fluid leak it can increase the stopping distance, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the front-brake calipers if necessary, free of charge. The recall began June 9, 2015. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), or 1-800-462-8782 (GMC). GM's number for this recall is 14888.

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon trucks manufactured January 6, 2014, to April 1, 2015. In the affected vehicles, the hooks that secure the driver's and/or front passenger's seat frame may not have been properly attached to the vehicle body during assembly. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 207, "Seating Systems."

Risk: If the seat-frame attachment hooks are not secured properly, the seat may not be adequately anchored to the vehicle, and in the event of a crash, the seat occupant could be at an increased risk of an injury.

Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the seats, correcting their installation as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on June 2, 2015. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon vehicles manufactured January 6, 2014, to October 1, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the driver air bag connections may have been wired incorrectly. This could reverse the deployment sequence and disrupt the deployment timing of the driver air bag. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."

Risk: If the driver air bag does not deploy as designed, there is an increased risk of driver injury in the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment.

Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM), free of charge. The recall began on October 6, 2014. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2015 Chevrolet Colorado vehicles manufactured September 15, 2014, to January 21, 2015, and 2015 GMC Canyon vehicles manufactured October 3, 2014, to December 9, 2014. The affected vehicles have a front driver air bag inflator that may be misaligned to the air bag module backplate. This can cause the inflator to separate from the backplate during a deployment.

Risk: If the inflator separates from the back plate in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, this may cause the air bag or steering wheel components to separate and be propelled into the interior compartment, potentially seriously injuring the driver or other occupants. Additionally, the air bag may fail to properly inflate, increasing the risk of injury to the driver.

Remedy: GM has notified owners, and dealers will inspect the driver air bag module inflator for proper alignment, replacing the air bag, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began March 19, 2015. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 15037.

The high pressure fuel pump may detach from its mounting flange, possibly resulting in the pump damaging the high pressure fuel line.

Risk: A damaged fuel line can create a fuel leak, increasing the risk of a fire.

Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the high pressure fuel pump, and high pressure fuel pipe, free of charge. The recall began July 2, 2018.
