The contact owns a 2020 BMW 330i. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the starter made an abnormal, grinding metal-like sound. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that the starter had failed. The starter was replaced under NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V056000 (Electrical System); however, the vehicle failed to start one morning post-repair. The message "Engine Cannot Start" was displayed. The vehicle was towed back to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the starter failure had caused damage to the battery. The dealer informed the contact that the battery needed to be replaced prior to the starter replacement. Additionally, the contact was informed that the transmission harness, signal wire, and ending harness had overheated and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failures, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 110,897.

Good afternoon. I have called and spoken to my local BMW dealership at Grayson BMW service department many times. As of today they report no remedy and have no idea when a resolution will be available. Filing this complaint (second formal written complaint) due to lack of this not being in any sort of "timely manner." This recall is noted as an URGENT FIRE RISK WHEN PARKED for almost seven months now. I have parked the car outside and through the winter and now getting into the summer. In looking up this recall and reading associated documents, it seems there has been a remedy to many makes and models but still nothing for the 2020 330i, and no word on what to do, advisement, or timeline on resolution. I called the NHTSA hotline but after waiting, decided to attempt another written complaint. Previous complaint #11712900. Thank you, [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

My car was parked at home and hadnt been driven in hours. My neighbor contacted me, saying that my car was on fire. I went outside, and it was on fire, and the fire department was called. After BMW conducted an investigation, they deemed the car fire to be related to the active recall. The manufacturer (BMW) is violating the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act (49 U.S Code Section 30120) by refusing a "remedy without charge" for recall 24V-536. A manufacturer is required to provide a remedy for a safety recall "without charge." BMW is offering a loan payoff (21,851.37). This current offer violated this federal statute by forcing me to absorb the loss of my 2500 down payment and accumulated equity. Additionally, Case Management is threatening to revoke my essential transportation (loaner) unless I sign a settlement that omits a verbally promised 4,000 credit buy with non-complaint conditions: it is a restricted discount only valid for future BMW purchases, it was omitted from the legal contract that I am being pressured to sign, and it places burden on me, the victim, to find a replacement vehivle while threaten to revoke my loaner transportation. This is a clear attempt to bypass the federal requirement for a free and complete remedy for a dangerous safety defect. I have attached a picture of the fires along with the fire department report, and the email thread between Case Management of BMW and me. On March 25, 2026, I was offered a loyalty goodwill of 4,000 after the purchase of a BMW from their dealership. March 26, 2026, I was told to contact my loan finance company to inquire about a collateral substitution. After I emailed the CEO and VP of BMW executives, I was then asked about what car I was interested in as a substitute for collateral. March 31, 2026, I am told to coordinate with the dealership as well because the BMW corporation doesn't coordinate with the dealership about the substitution of collateral.

The Active Grille Shutter (AGS) system on my vehicle suffered an internal mechanical failure (fault codes 138206 and 138224). These shutters are a critical part of the engine cooling system. Failure of the AGS to operate correctly leads to immediate engine overheating risks, potential sudden loss of power (Limp Mode) in high-speed traffic, and thermal damage to engine components, posing a severe safety hazard. The manufacturer, BMW of North America, has officially acknowledged this defect via Extended Warranty SIB 01 03 25. However, both the local dealer (BMW of Sterling) and BMW of North America corporate office have formally refused to honor this safety-related warranty repair. Despite clear video and photographic evidence showing zero external impact to the vehicle's front end or grilles, both parties claim 'outside influence' without providing any technical proof or documentation of such impact. By refusing to repair a known cooling system defect, the manufacturer and the dealer are forcing a vehicle with a high risk of overheating back onto public roads. This represents a systemic failure to address a safety-critical component under a federally protected warranty

The contact owned a 2020 BMW 330i. The contact stated that while accelerating from a complete stop and making a left turn, another vehicle, trying to beat the light and driving 60 MPH, crashed into the driver's side of the vehicle. The contact was trapped because the front driver's side door failed to open. The air bags failed to deploy. The police officers delayed their arrival, and a police report was not filed. The contact was in shock. The contact drove to the residence and was able to exit the vehicle through the front passenger's side door. The contact sustained C8-T1 nerve injuries, spinal injuries, and underwent surgery, developed myelopathy, severe PTSD, severe whiplash, and the contact sustained right eye bruises after hitting her eye against the steering wheel. The T1 neck screw that was previously installed in the contact's neck had backed out due to the impact and was replaced. The contact was informed that she nearly sustained paralysis due to the crash impact. The vehicle was taken to an autobody repair shop, and the vehicle was totaled by the insurance company. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and sent an engineer who performed the vehicle inspection. The manufacturer later sent a letter to the contact, providing an engineering explanation for the air bag's failure to deploy. The failure mileage was approximately 6,500.

I am not sure this the the right form for filing my complaint. I was issued a recall letter in November about my car catching on fire. I have seen videos of other BMWs catching on fire. I am not sure if legally I can take it to a mechanic? What if something happens while it is at the mechanic? Legally do I have to take it to the dealership? What if it catches on fire and my neighbors property gets damaged? I have called and email BMW but no response. I need to take my BMW in for other issues but live out in the country, what are we suppose to do? It has been several months. They shouldn’t be allowed to do this. They should replace the vehicle or buy it back. It is dangerous.

The recall has been open for approximately five months, and BMW has not provided a remedy or repair timeline. I have been informed that parts are unavailable, and no interim fix has been offered. This defect presents a serious fire hazard, and I do not feel safe operating the vehicle. I am currently pregnant, which increases my concern for personal safety and the safety of my unborn child. Despite the unresolved safety recall, I am still required to make monthly payments on the vehicle. Lane DepartureJan 2026 · ODI 11713830Details +

On November 15th 2025, while driving at highway speed in my lane, the vehicle’s lane assist system applied a sudden and unexpected steering input. I did not command a lane change or steering correction. The steering input caused the vehicle to become unstable, rotate, and spin across the roadway, resulting in a collision with the highway barrier. Prior to the incident, the vehicle had repeatedly failed to install a BMW-issued lane assist software update despite multiple attempts following BMW’s published instructions. BMW dealership personnel were aware of the update failure. The lane assist system remained active and provided no warnings or limitations. Weather conditions changed rapidly due to a brief, unexpected ice storm lasting approximately ten minutes. The vehicle did not provide a warning, restriction, or automatic disengagement of the lane assist system under these conditions. The loss of control occurred immediately following an unexpected steering intervention by lane assist. The loss of control occurred immediately following the steering intervention.

Re: 25V-636 We received a recall notice for the above notice over a month ago. No further communication has been sent from BMW in the status of new part availability and they refuse to assist with accommodations because of the scale of the recall. The letter clearly states that there is a fire risk and to not park near structures. This leaves almost everybody who owns affected cars with no option but to put themselves or someone else at risk of this car catching on fire - where else can you park a car that might catch on fire? Its been 4 months since this recall has been issued nationally and no communicated resolution or targetted timing for resolution. Im concerned this recall will potentially start a gigantic car fire and harm someone, their homes, or their neighbors' property. I find it completely unacceptable that there's not even clear resolution timing for this problem which is essentially a ticking time bomb. People with these cars need help beyond what we're able to do as individuals. Thanks, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Within days of purchasing the vehicle, multiple warning lights and safety-related alerts appeared, including repeated check engine warnings, an alert stating “Driver Assistance Support Reduced,” and a wrench indicator referencing an auto lighting and wiping system malfunction. While driving, the vehicle felt unstable and would sway side to side, making it difficult to maintain confident control. The vehicle was brought in for service shortly after purchase due to these concerns and was removed from my possession because of the seriousness of the issues. During the service process, I was informed that the vehicle had previously been involved in an accident and that a critical structural safety component (the front crash bar) was damaged. This damage had not been disclosed prior to purchase. The crash bar is a key part of the vehicle’s body structure designed to absorb impact and protect occupants in a collision. Driving a vehicle with damage to this component posed a potential safety risk. The combination of structural damage, reduced driver assistance alerts, visibility system warnings, and unstable handling raised concerns about crash protection, vehicle control, and overall safety. The issues were identified by the selling dealer during inspection after the vehicle was returned for service and are available for further inspection if requested.

I own [XXX] BMW vehicle affected by a safety recall for a defective engine starter relay that may corrode, overheat, and cause a fire. The recall notice dated November 2025 states the vehicle is not safe to drive, with no remedy available, rendering it unusable and hazardous. Recall N0.25V-636. Under Kansas Lemon Law (K.S.A. 50-645 et seq.), I am entitled to a refund or replacement for this substantial defect impairing use, value, and safety, which BMW cannot repair. I demanded a full buyback at original purchase price, including fees, taxes, and incidental costs, or a comparable replacement. I requested a response within 10 business days. I sent this demand in November 2025 and have heard nothing since. The statute of limitations for lemon law claims in Kansas is four years from defect discovery, per UCC provisions for warranty breaches. The Oil filter housing on my BMW 330i failed randomly while driving causing my vehicle to be depleted off coolant within seconds. If you want to inspect the part you will have to reach out to bmw of Columbus for documentation and I can provide the service records for repair. This caused my vehicle to have to be brought to an immediate halt to not cause overheating or engine destroying failure at a time where service/repair isn’t available. There were no warning lights or leaks prior to the vehicle malfunctioning all at once. I ubered to get coolant and once filling the reservoir the coolant immediately leaked out resulting in me needing a tow to the dealership. This problem has been reproduced with many dealers as there’s numerous of report of this online and I believe the dealer has inspected this part but is refusing to replace or recall this part under any type of program or create any type of solution to make this not happen again. There wasn’t any small leaks or warning lights shown before this issue spawned all at once then showing the low coolant light.

While driving, my 2020 BMW 330i suddenly entered “drivetrain limited power” mode, severely restricting acceleration and overall performance. Upon diagnostic review, the cause was found to be a failure of the Heat Management Module (HMM). This created a hazardous situation as the vehicle unexpectedly lost power while merging into highway traffic. Researching online, I’ve discovered numerous reports from other BMW owners experiencing the exact same failure on this model and other recent 3-series vehicles. This component failure is both common and costly, and yet there has been no recall or formal action from BMW to address it. Worse, the HMM is not covered under third-party powertrain warranties because it is considered an electronic part, leaving many owners with unsafe vehicles and no support. Given how widespread this issue appears to be — and the serious safety risk posed by sudden engine power loss — I urge the NHTSA to investigate this component for a potential recall or required manufacturer remedy.

The vehicle has persistent issues with its software and safety systems, creating significant safety risks. The Remote Software Upgrade feature fails to install, despite indicating it is “ready to install” with preparations complete. This prevents critical updates that could address safety and performance defects. BMW Customer Support was unable to resolve the issue, and a local dealership confirmed no hardware faults but could not address the software issue due to limitations as a non-BMW-certified service center. Several critical safety features also do not function properly. The Blind Spot Warning system has never issued alerts, leaving the driver unaware of vehicles in adjacent lanes. The Forward Collision Warning system has never activated, even in close proximity to other vehicles. The Lane Departure Warning fails to consistently activate, while Lane Keeping Assistance operates only intermittently, despite being designed to engage above 40 mph. Additionally, the Parking Collision Warning and Rear Cross Traffic Warning systems have never provided alerts, even when obstacles or approaching vehicles are present. These malfunctions severely compromise the vehicle’s ability to prevent accidents and ensure safety. The vehicle also intermittently displays drivetrain failure warnings, stating the car can still be driven but should be serviced. Upon inspection, no issues were identified. Consistent fault codes for the active kidney grille shutters appear, but no check engine light is illuminated. These recurring warnings create uncertainty about the vehicle’s reliability and the accuracy of its diagnostics. The combination of these issues places the driver, passengers, and others at risk. A thorough investigation is needed to identify and resolve the root causes. All systems are available for inspection upon request.

The drivers side front tie rod buckled while backing into a parking space at less than 5mph. This vehicle had pulled out of our home garage and driveway just 5 minutes prior to tie rod buckling. The car was fully operational with no steering issues. NO IMPACT had taken place in the time from garage cam video until vehicle was pulling into a parking space and steering was off for one tire. Vehicle could not steer correctly to be parked so we had it towed to Hafkemeyer Motors. Before the vehicle arrived they told us it sounded like a tie rod was broken, which is likely due to impact. NO IMPACT occurred. Upon inspection of the vehicle, two separate technicians agreed this vehicle has no signs of any impact. This tie rod appears to have buckled for no reason. They reported that 2018-2019 model years of this same vehicle had a tie rod defect which resulted in a recall and replacement. With no evidence of any impact, they recommended replacing the both front drivers and passenger side tie rods because they feared the same thing could happen to the other side. We have video of the vehicle leaving home 5 minutes before the buckle happened and the vehicle was operational with no steering issues at all. Mechanic took photos of the undercarriage of the vehicle to show buckled tie rod and lack of any evidence of impact to the vehicle. They also noted in their reporting system what was observed and replaced. We believe this recall may need to be expanded to include additional model years or vehicles with this same tie rod defect. This car has less than 50K miles and no crashes or impact. This tie rod should not have buckled like this. Show below are photos of both front tie rods as well as mechanic notes and receipt for work done. I cannot upload the video of the operational vehicle, but it can be viewed in my DropBox folder here: [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

It's been about 3 weeks since the most BMW recent software update, (11/2023.50) has downloaded to my vehicle via the BMW connected drive services. This is the second time that over the air, BMW connected drive upgrades have failed to install on my vehicle. As before, the upgrade has downloaded to the automobile but will not activate as has happened successfully in the past. The above upgrade is supposed to solve a safety/visability problem, a stated legal requirement, pertaining to the position of the heads up display. I have consulted with BMW customer relations and Technical advisors. I received and followed several sets of recommended self-install procedures without success. I was the advised to contact my BMW Service Center in Seattle who would be able to install the update. However, they, in turn, advised me the problem was related to a weak battery. My local mechanic subsequently test the batter and indicated no discernible problem and no current need for its replacement. I’ve seen a variety of internet comments indicating other owners with similar unresolved problems with the BMW system. There appears to be no hardware or direct software install alternative. There is nothing like a recall in place to solve this problem. Given this latest update is required in part to meet safety requirements related to the vehicle heads up display, I am hoping your assistance will resolve this matter quickly. Thank you in advance -

Passenger safety restraint system warning occurred. meaning passenger air bag is not effective. Upon searching internet for the problem I realized this has been a common issue with BMW's for years. It is a very expensive fix and is a safety hazard. My dealership wants $2700 to fix the pressure sensor in the passenger seat. Until I can get this fixed I am not going to transport any passengers in the front seat, just to be safe.

The lower active grill on my 2020 BMW 330i failed. I purchased the vehicle on January 24th. On February 27th, the check engine light came on. I called the dealership I bought it from. They told me they did not have the necessary technology to diagnose, so I took it to a BMW mechanic. The mechanic told me it is a known warranty issue with this particular BMW, and that BMW should fix it for free under the limited warranty bulletin. When I tried to contact BMW about this issue, they refused to pay for it stating that my specific VIN number was not affected by this issue, and therefore they wouldn't pay for it. This makes no sense seeing as it is a clearly known issue with an active bulletin out for the same exact year make and model as my vehicle. The production clearly did not change enough to fix the issue, so my vehicle should be included in the limited warranty/recall. The flaps can get stuck closed, which can cause the car to overheat quickly, which can be extremely unsafe. BMW refused to even look at the vehicle to see if the issue was in fact the warranty issue without me paying a $250 diagnostic fee, when I had just paid to have it diagnosed at a different BMW mechanic.

Both the UPPER and LOWER active grille shutters for most BMW models in the 5 model years prior to mine had extended service warranties due to frequent failures of the part. It appears that the design was not improved with my model year and yet my vehicle is NOT part of the extended warranty. My vehicle is only 4 years old and BOTH the upper and lower air flap control motors have failed. The motors are not sold individually, but are sold as a part of the entire shutter assembly which has a part cost of $250 - $350 each with comparable installation costs. The lower shutter assembly requires the removal of the entire bumper. Why is the extended service warranty not applicable to newer models?

I have been in the motorcycle industry 1988-2000 and the auto industry since 2000 to current, a break for about 10 years in there. I am fairly mechanically knowledgeable. On 8/1/2 was showing a customer a BMW 330I that we had in inventory. The customer sat in the driver's seat, started the engine and popped the primary hood latch. I was at the front on the vehicle. Since I deal with every make, model and years finding the secondary latch release can be challenging. Initially, I felt under the hood at the center, not finding it I proceeded to feel my way down both sides of the hood. Still not finding the release I inserted my right hand into the grill at first grill opening center right (drivers side). I was feeling inside to find the elusive release. About 1-2 seconds of feeling around I felt the a pressure against my hand. There isn't much space in the grill openings and very quickly I could not remove my hand in time, it was pinched between the vertical grill vent and, at that point unknown, active grill venting. My hand was stuck and the active grill venting continued to close since it indicated the cycle was not complete. I was stuck and it was very painful. My right was stuck in the first opening and I tried to overpower the electric motor with my left hand on the second grill opening (drivers side) I could not overpower it. I slowed it but it continued trying to close. I told the customer that I was stuck and in pain and that I needed help. I could not pull hand out since it was never intended to have a hand in there, the edges where sharp plastic on the inside, almost like a barb. It took me, being one handed and both his hands pushing on the vents to over power the system. Without the second adult male, I was trapped. Issues: 1. excessively overpowered 2. no reverse sensor like auto up passenger windows 3. no break-away safety system

The car started and moved forward with no driver or passenger inside and stopped because it hit my garage door from which it was parked 3 feet from before it moved forward driverless. A car which moves by itself is unsafe because it can hit a person or object. to date, 8/11/2021 the problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? The car has not been inspected. Today a message from BMW initiated an inspection appointment at the dealer. Problem occurred without warning.
