“The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated that while driving approximately 15 MPH uphill in the mountains, the transmission started slipping, followed by a loud banging sound. The contact stated that later, while fishing, there was an abnormal metallic sound like BBs hitting a tin can coming from the vehicle. The contact stated that previously, while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lunged forward, followed by grinding and banging sounds. There was no indication of a fluid leak coming from the vehicle. The contact stated that shortly afterwards, the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was restarted and resumed normal operation. No warning lights were illuminated. An unrelated warning light for the oxygen sensor was illuminated. The local dealer was contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and informed that there was no recall coverage or assistance available for the vehicle. The manufacturer referred the owner to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 181,000.”

The contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V645000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic); however, the failure occurred after the recall repair. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the brake pedal was firm while depressed, and the vehicle failed to stop immediately. The contact, who is an independent mechanic, diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the vacuum pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. GM will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the SDM software. Vehicles that have had a previous air bag deployment will have the SDM replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. Unintended activation of the driveline-protection system will cause unintended braking on the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor, causing the vehicle to pull to one side unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.
